Between Full Moon and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.
If you are an angel fan, the angel of the Moon is Gabriel. See link for instructions on Angela McGerr's Full Moon Meditation with Gabriel. from her A Harmony of Angels Book, which is out of print and collectible but we still have a few remaining and personally signed copies via the Harmony Shop.
At the time of the Full Moon the Sun and Moon are in opposition. The solar (sun) energy influences our masculine/yang archetypal attributes (our outer world) such as strength, courage, identity, self-esteem, expression, conscious beliefs and determination together with our logical outlook. Whereas the lunar energy (moon) influences our femininely archetypal attributes (our inner world), such as our unconscious beliefs, hidden emotions, nurturing feelings, creativity and intuition. The Full Moon is a powerful and appropriate time to show gratitude for life and the riches and bounty bestowed upon us by Mother Earth (Gaia).
The Native American tribes who named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons. This is the Thunder Moon, so called due to the prevalence of summer thunder storms. There isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. Other tribes knew it as the Full Buck Moon, to reflect the time of year that a buck's antlers would be fully frown. Some American Farmers have adopted these titles so that they are still used today. (See article in the Telegraph for more on this)
Although the Celts were believed to have revered nature, the idea that they also had tree names for each Full Moon of the year, is neo-Pagan, having been introduced by Robert Graves in the 1948, which I find rather charming. So, according to Robert Graves's imaginings,The Druids, venerated all nature and to them this is the Holly Moon, an evergreen which reminds us of the immortality of nature. This Full Moon was also known by the Celts as the Tinne, pronounced chihnn-uh'; they saw holly as a potent symbol of masculinity and firmness. Weapons were often constructed from its wood but it was also revered for its protective magic. A sprig of holly can be hung in the home, or used as a charm, for safety and good luck. Holly water was created by soaking leaves overnight in spring water under a full moon, then used for protective blessing. I wonder if it was the origin of 'holy water'? See thoughtco.com.
Other names for a Full Moon in July are: Rose Moon, Thunder Moon, Hay Moon (Northern Hemisphere) or Wolf Moon, Old Moon, Ice Moon (Southern Hemisphere). Names for the moon can also relate to the season, so this Full Moon could also be called the Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, Green Corn Moon, Grain Moon, Fruit Moon or Harvest (after the Summer Solstice i.e. Northern Hemisphere) or Old Moon, Moon After Yule, Snow Moon, Hunger Moon, Wolf Moon, Sap Moon, Crow Moon, Lenten Moon (after the Winter Solstice i.e. Southern Hemisphere). The time between any Full Moon and the next New Moon is a good time, energetically, to detox the body. I recommend anoil pulling technique, with coconut oil, which must be from a glass container for best taste.
Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing balance and wellbeing into our lives.
Saturday 24th July, being the day of the Full Moon in July, it is also Guru Purnima (the Full Moon of the Gurus) in Hindu tradition. The day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadh of the Hindu calendar is traditionally celebrated as Guru Purnima by Hindus.
On this day, devotees offer puja (worship) to their Guru.
The Sanskrit root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes the darkness of ignorance is a Guru.
It is a day for celebration and worship, a day on which the disciples remember and express their gratitude to the lineage of Gurus.
Hindus believe that a Guru is necessary to make one understand the formless Divinity.
Saturday 24th July is Asalhka Puja Day; a Buddhist commemoration of the Buddha's first public speech to five ascetics.
He declared the middle way, the noble eight-fold path and the four noble truths upon which Buddhism is based.
