🌟 Honouring Confucius’s Birthday & Teachers’ Day
Monday 28th September marks the traditional birthday of Confucius, the influential Chinese philosopher and teacher whose ideas have shaped Chinese and East Asian culture for more than two millennia.
In Taiwan, 28th September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day, honouring Confucius as a great teacher and recognising the contribution made by teachers everywhere.
📚 Confucius – Teacher, Philosopher & Seeker of Wisdom
Born in 551 BCE, Confucius devoted much of his life to teaching and to exploring how individuals and societies might live with greater wisdom, integrity and harmony.
At the heart of his philosophy was the belief that learning is a lifelong process. Education was not simply about acquiring knowledge, but about cultivating character, developing self-awareness and learning how to live well alongside others.
His teachings emphasised qualities such as respect, compassion, integrity, responsibility and leading through example — principles that still feel remarkably relevant today.
🌱 The Teachers Along Our Path
Teachers come into our lives in many forms.
Some teach us formally in classrooms or on courses. Others appear as mentors, friends, family members or colleagues. Sometimes the most important lessons come through our experiences — including the challenging ones.
Teachers’ Day offers an opportunity to remember those who have helped shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
You might like to take a moment today to:
✨ Remember a teacher who made a lasting difference to your life
✨ Send a message of thanks to a mentor or guide
✨ Reflect on something you have recently learnt
✨ Consider the wisdom you may now be passing on to others
Wisdom has a way of travelling through generations: received, experienced, adapted and shared again.
🙏 A Tradition of Gratitude
The celebration of Teachers’ Day reflects the importance traditionally placed on teachers and education within Confucian culture.
It can also prompt us to consider our own relationship with learning. However much knowledge or experience we accumulate, there is always something more to discover — about our world, about other people and about ourselves.
Perhaps one of the most valuable qualities we can cultivate is the willingness to remain a student.
🌿 Ancient Wisdom for Modern Living
At Harmony Healing, the idea of learning from the wisdom of those who came before us is particularly close to our hearts.
Much of my own work explores ancient teachings and traditions and considers how their wisdom might still have relevance in modern life. Yet learning is never simply about looking backwards. Each generation experiences, interprets and carries that wisdom forward in its own way.
Confucius himself understood the importance of both studying the past and continuing to learn throughout life.
🌟 A Gentle Invitation
Today, perhaps take a few moments to remember the teachers who have crossed your path.
Who encouraged you?
Who challenged you?
Who helped you see something differently?
And perhaps consider where you have become the teacher too — sometimes without even realising it.
May Teachers’ Day be a celebration not only of those who teach, but of the lifelong exchange of wisdom between us all.
