🕊️ World Animal Day & St Francis of Assisi – 4th October
Celebrating compassion for all beings
🐾 Why today matters
Sunday 4th October is World Animal Day, an international day dedicated to raising awareness of animal welfare and encouraging greater compassion for the creatures with whom we share our planet.
It also coincides beautifully with the Feast of St Francis of Assisi in the Christian calendar. St Francis is traditionally associated with animals and the natural world, making 4th October a particularly fitting day to reflect on our relationship with other living beings.
Around this date, churches and communities in many parts of the world hold Blessing of the Animals ceremonies, celebrating the companionship, joy and enrichment animals bring to our lives.
📜 St Francis of Assisi
Francis of Assisi (c.1181–1226) founded the Franciscan order and became known for his simplicity, compassion for the poor and deep sense of kinship with the natural world.
Stories about his life frequently portray animals not as lesser beings, but as fellow creatures worthy of kindness and respect. Perhaps the best known is the tale of St Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio, in which Francis is said to have approached a wolf feared by local villagers and brought about a peaceful understanding between them.
Following his death, Francis was canonised in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX. The magnificent Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, begun shortly afterwards, remains an important place of pilgrimage today.
His message of simplicity and reverence for creation continues to resonate almost eight centuries later.
🐈 Appreciating our animal companions
World Animal Day is also a lovely opportunity simply to appreciate the animals who share — or have shared — our lives.
Their companionship can bring enormous comfort, laughter and unconditional affection, and anyone who has loved an animal knows just how individual their personalities can be.
For 19 years, our much-loved Lily was part of our family, bringing us companionship, resilience and plenty of character. Although she is no longer with us, she remains very much part of our family story. Here she is enjoying cuddles with my daughter — a lovely reminder of the special bonds we form with our animal companions.
And perhaps, given everything our animals quietly put up with from us, they might reasonably wonder why there isn't a Human Appreciation Day too!
🌿 Compassion for all living beings
Whether or not we share our home with an animal, World Animal Day invites us to consider our relationship with the wider living world.
That might mean supporting animal welfare, choosing more consciously what we buy and eat, creating wildlife-friendly spaces in our gardens, or simply taking a little more time to notice the birds, insects and animals around us.
There is something very much in keeping with the spirit of St Francis in remembering that human beings are part of nature, rather than separate from it.
🔥 Gentle energetic support for animals
Those who work with energy healing may also choose to include animals within their practice.
Animals can often respond particularly well to a calm, non-invasive approach in which they are free to move towards or away from the practitioner as they wish. Within my own work, practices such as Violet Flame of Amenti may be offered gently, always allowing the animal to determine how much interaction it wants.
As with any complementary approach, energy work should sit alongside appropriate veterinary care rather than replace it.

🌳 Reconnecting with the natural world
Our work at Harmony In Nature also explores our relationship with the more-than-human world through Forest Bathing (Shinrin-Yoku).
These gentle, sensory experiences invite us to slow down and notice what is already around us — trees, birdsong, changing light, scent, texture and the rhythms of the seasons.
You can see forthcoming Harmony In Nature Forest Bathing sessions in Surrey.

On World Animal Day, perhaps the simplest practice of all is just to notice another living being — whether a beloved pet, a garden visitor or a creature encountered on a walk — and acknowledge that we share this extraordinary planet together.
Wishing all creatures, two-legged, four-legged, winged, finned and otherwise, a peaceful World Animal Day. 🐾🌍
