Solstice Issue - Fragrance & Blossom

June Solstice Issue HIN

June is the start of British summertime. The roses bloom, imprinting their perfumed scent into the air of the extended evenings.

The astronomical marking of the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, also the longest day, is on the Summer Solstice, this year on the 20th, celebrated by many cultures around the world. Midsummer’s Day on 24th harks back to an earlier calendar which marked differently.

Garden flowers are colourful, and, depending on your location, wild hedgerows are splendid with hawthorn blossom and elderflower (the basis for elderflower cordial), replacing the departing holly blossom. In the trees, the horse chestnut blossom spires will soon be joined by the scented bracts of lime flower, which you may smell before you see them. Lime flowers, also known as linden blossom, can make a softly aromatic bedtime infusion, which the French have been drinking for centuries, as ‘tilleul’. With so much blossom, combined with warm air, you may well be noticing that smells are stronger at this time of year. Summer berries are abundant, and strawberries are in demand for the picnic season. We hope the warmer weather encourages you to choose to take yourself out into nature more often, whether that be a swift five-minute tea break on a patch of green, to sit by a few plant pots, to picnic in a park, or immerse yourself in some natural beauty for a few hours. As if you needed reminding, on really hot days, the coolest places to be are under a canopy of trees!

Our public event on Saturday 15th June is at Harry Edwards Foundation, near Shere (Surrey), or we currently have a private session slot available on Saturday 29th June.

Monthly Traditions and History

The month could be named after Juno, the Roman Goddess linked with marriage. To the Anglo-Saxons, it was called sera monath (dry month), which is not necessarily our modern-day experience.

According to author Robert Graves and 'neo pagans' who follow this tradition, June covers the sixth and seventh moon months in the Celtic calendar: the Hawthorn Moon takes us 13th May-9th June and the Oak Moon is 10th June-7th July. Ref thoughtco.com.

Hawthorn Hin newsletter

The Hawthorn Moon comes soon after Beltane. and was known as Huath (pronounced Hoh-uh). The plant is prickly with pretty blossoms and is associated with masculine energy, fire and fertility; tradition dictating that male potency is high at this time of year.  Hawthorn can be used for magic rituals involving masculine power (it has a raw phallic energy about it), making professional connections and business decisions. The faerie realm are said to like it, with the fae being particularly attracted when Hawthorns grow together with Ash and Oak

Oak MoonThe Oak Moon takes place when the trees are approaching full bloom. The oak signifies strength and power, typically towering over its fellow trees, and was highly sacred to the mightly Druids. The oak is associated with invocations for fertility, strength, power, success and abundance. An acorn is meant to bring luck at interviews or business meetings, whereas catching a falling oak leaf is meant to bring health and wellbeing all year. The Celts called this month Duir, sometimes believed to be the stem word for druid and meaning door.

Meteor Showers & Night Sky

New Moon is Thursday 6th June @ 13:37 (Hawthorn New Moon) and Full Moon is Saturday 22nd June @ 02:07 (Friday night/Saturday morning, Solstice Oak Full Moon), with Joanna's Full Moon Meditation on 22nd June.

We have the Boötids Meteor showervisible 21st June-2nd July, peaking around 23rd June.

Forest Bathing in the News
Excitingly, the Forest Bathing Show Garden won the 'Best in Show' award at last month's Chelsea Flower Show. Designed by first-time exhibitor Ula Maria, the garden was sponsored by Muscular Dystrophy UK.  Ula designed the garden to be accessible and to show-case sensory interaction with nature by featuring a birch grove, with dappled light and running water, woodland flowers and grasses plus wild strawberries.

Close Encounters of the Animal Kind
The Red Squirrel - our native species

Red Squirrel Image

Last month, Joanna spent a week in Anglesey with her family and visited a red squirrel reserve on the island.

Native to Britain, the red squirrel is one of our iconic species, but has been displaced to a few isolated forest locations, by the larger more distructive North American grey squirrel. Now recognised as an endangered species, red squirrels are protected by UK law, often living in nature reserves.

Red squirrels are great acrobats and swimmers and are ambidextrous. They spend about 70% of their active time foraging in the tree tops. In the autumn they also consume fungi, bury seeds and nuts for the winter and don't hibernate.

In 1998, they were almost extinct in Angelsey, but a pioneering conservation project means there are now over 500 on the island, the largest population in Wales. In 2008 a few crossed the Menai Strait sea channel and re-colonised the mainland county of Gwynedd!

The squirrel symbolises qualities of resourcefulness, playfulness and preparation. Traditionally, if a red squirrel crosses your path, it could be a reminder to stay positive and not give up.

In Native American lore, the red squirrel is hardworking, nurturing and caring, and is a symbol of trust and thrift.

Mental Health Awareness Week

May session from MHA weekMental Health Awareness Week was 13th-19th May, and we were involved in three sessions in the Surrey Hills.

On Wednesday 15th, we ran a staff event for a Guildford-based mental health charity at Newlands Corner,.

On Saturday we offered two taster sessions at a wellness event at the Devil's Punch Bowl, curated by a collaboration between Surrey Hills Enterprises and the National Trust.  Despite the session only lasting 45-60 minutes, the sharing amongst participants revealed exceptionally profound effects and realisations.

On Sunday, we ran our monthly public session at the beautiful Harry Edwards Foundation, Shere. We had perfect weather - considerably better than was forecast - and, as usual, the participants started as strangers but by the end felt connected as a group. The image shows Katie leading the group into a mindful tea contemplation.

Risk Assessment at Marble Hill House, Twickenham

RA at Marble HillIn May, we met up with Anthony Lee, the Community Engagement Officer at Marble Hill, which is an English heritage venue.

Anthony gave us a tour of the sixty acres of riverside parkland featuring restored gardens and reinvigorated woods, in the grounds surrounding a Georgian manor, built by Henrietta Howard.

There are some remarkably large horse chestnut trees with knobbly bark, an old black walnut near the river, as well as an enormous oak with a beautiful shape by the gardens.

We can definitely see this working as a nature connection route, especially with future charity work.

Harmony in Nature Events in Surrey/London - What to Expect

Our nature immersion sessions involve a leisurely amble through woodland, observing and connecting with nature in its current season. Every event is different, though we may see the subtle movements and patterns of nature, smell the scent from vegetation or the earth, touch bark and listen to birds or a breeze.  The session culminates with a treelaxation, our unique nature meditation under the canopy of trees, and an optional woodland tea. We aim to leave you feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated.

Forest Bathing is an evidence-based wellbeing activity. Spending time in woodland has been shown to potentially boost our immune system for 2-4 weeks, balance blood pressure, reduce blood sugars, stress and cortisol levels, amongst other benefits. Participants may feel a reduction in anxiety, depression or rumination, and an improvement in concentration, memory and creativity, as well as improved sleep. Connecting with nature has been shown to reconnect us also to ourselves and to others, and this has certainly been our experience.

Several venues are available for private bookings, themed events and corporate sessions, so do enquire for details, and about the possibility of using other venues.

☕ We go out rain or shine, since, with the right clothing and footwear, usually plenty of layers, and a spare, we can happily stay outdoors for hours, especially if we take a hot/cold drink and a snack to sustain us.

Private and Corporate Sessions

If you have a group of friends or colleagues who would enjoy this experience, we are offering 3-hour sessions for up to 10 participants from just £333. See Harry Edwards section below.
