  • Liberalia and St Patrick's Day 2019

st patricks Day by Diane PaganSunday 17th March is St Patrick’s Day in Eire (Ireland).

St Patrick is credited with converting the Irish back to Christianity which had been abandoned under Roman rule.

Saint Patrick is said to have used the Shamrock (three leaved clover) as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity. According to Wikipedia, the name shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg, which is derived from the Irish word for clover (seamair) and means simply "little clover" or "young clover".

The Irish Shamrock downloadable image (see left) by Diane Pagan is from her  theimaginationbox.com website, where you will find many other creative projects to celebrate St Patrick's Day.

Sunday 17th March was also Liberalia, this was the Ancient Roman Festival to celebrate the male coming of age!  In view of the statement above that Christianity which had been abandoned under Roman rule, I wonder if there is a connection that when Eire re-converted to Christianity they chose the day of the male coming of age as their date of celebration...

Liberalia was the Roman Feast of Liber Pater (God of wine and fertility, especially seeds) and his consort Libera, and was held three days after the Ides of March (15th). The day was celebrated with ribald songs, processions of priests and elder priestesses - adorned with Ivy - and sacrifices, with masks being hung on trees.

When boys reached puberty (usually aged 14-16) this amulet would be removed and often placed on an altar dedicated to the Lares(Deities protecting the household and family, image immediately above from Wikipedia shows a statue of one of the Lares holding a cornucopia from Axatiana (now Lora del Rio) in Roman Spain, early 1st century AD (National Archaeological Museum of Spain), together with either a lock of the boy's hair or stubble from his first shave. Subsequently mothers' would retrieve them and keep them safe out of superstition, and they would be used for protection if the son was ever in public office or in a role involving any danger.

Later in the ceremony the rites of passsage would continue with the fathers' taking their sons to the Forum to be presented as adult citizens, now with full adult rites including eligibilty to vote (if he met the statutory requirements of the time) and the authority to wear the pure white adult toga, as well as to marry.  See Romeacrosseurope.com for more information.

  • Lupercalia, 15th February 2019

    Lupercalia image from Wikipedia

Friday 15th February is Lupercalia in Ancient Roman tradition. Apparently, this was the popular ceremony of fertility, featuring naked men running through the street!  I can’t see this catching on in the UK climate!

This image of the Lupercalia Festival in Rome by Adam Elsheimer (18/03/1578 – 11/12/1610) is taken from the Wikipedia entry for Lupercalia and shows men dressed as dogs (or possibly Wolves since Lupus meant Wolf) and goats, Cupid and other personifications of fertility. Supposedly, the specially nominated priesthood for the occasion were called the Luperci ("brothers of the wolf"), and during the fertility ritual they paraded the streets around Rome either naked, or near naked, carrying strips of leather which were used to thrash in the direction of gathered audience. It was believed that any pregnant ladies struck by the whips would have an easier birthing process and any other ladies, whether considered barren or otherwise, mwould be granted fertility.

Hence, some say this ceremony was the precursor for Valentine’s Day (see entry below for 14th February).

  • Monday 13th July, Birthday of Ra & Roman Games of Apollo

Eye of Ra by Peter LomasMonday 13th July, according to some sources, was the Ancient Egyptian Festival to celebrate the Birthday of Ra.  Since Ra was the God of creation this could be interpreted as the day man was created!  Ra was also associated with the Sun and healing so perhaps it is no coincidence that the Roman’s celebrated Apollo on the same (Equivalent) date. Image by Peter Lomas from Pixabay.

Monday 13th July in Roman Times was the culmination of the Games of Apollo.  As early as 212 BCE 13th July was the celebration of Apollo as the God of Healing (especially during wars) but this later extended into an 8 day festival ending on 13th July.  Apollo was associated with the Sun and his twin Diana (Goddess of Hunting) was associated with the moon.  Apollo became significant among the Romans when Augustus Caesar, as a young man, chose Apollo as his own god, and attributed his victory over Antony and Cleopatra to Apollo’s superiority over the Egyptian Deities!  Augustus is said to have described Apollo as: “Governor of Roman destiny; master of the sun; archer; augur; averter of pestilence; and giver of sound morals to the young.”

  • Monday 15th March, Roman Festival of Anna Perenna & Ides of March

Anna Perenina 15th MarchMonday 15th March was the ancient celebration of Anna Perenna - Goddess of the Eternal Year in Roman tradition.  So that the circle could be completed, offerings were made to the Spirit of the Year.

Commoners celebrated with drinking, picnics and enthusiastic revelry.

According to Roman mythology, Anna Perenna was Dido's sister who, after Dido's suicide, was driven from Carthage to Latium. She was carried off by Numicus (the God of a stream) having incurred the wrath of Aeneas's wife in Latium. Aeneas's servants followed her tracks and discovered that she had metamorphosed into a water nymph.

Festival of Jupiter 15th marchIn Roman tradition, 15th March is also the Ides of March, as well as a Festival to Jupiter. Shakespeare had a soothsayer warn Julius Caesar 'Beware the Ides of March' and reputedly he was indeed assassinated on 15th March 44 BC.

  • Monday 1st March, St David's Day & Roman Festival of Matronalia

Saint Davids DayMonday 1st March is St David’s Day. St. David, Dewi Sant, is the patron saint of Wales, and 1st March, his feast day, is celebrated as a patriotic and cultural festival.

The exact year when St David was born isn't known, but it is believed to be between 462 and 515 AD.

Saint David, Grandson of the King of Ceredigion, was said to have been born on a clifftop during a fierce storm. He died on this day during the year 500. He grew up to be a celebrated Bishop and founder of monastic settlements and churches. Glastonbury Abbey may have been founded by St David.

So why is David associated with a dragon? There is a myth that when David was asked by villagers to slay a dragon, he instead went to visit the dragon and listen to its sad tale.

According to the BBC Website, Welsh people around the world mark the day by wearing one or both of Wales's national emblems; a daffodil and/or a leek.

Until lockdown, a St David's Day parade was held in central Cardiff every year, with exciting performances by dragons and theatre groups. Children can wear traditional Welsh clothing and take part in folk dances. St David's Hall in Cardiff also hosts a concert featuring the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales performing traditional songs.

These wives of the house also gave a feast for their female slaves.

Matronalia 1st MarchMonday 1st March in Ancient Roman tradition, is also Matronalia, which was the topsy-turvy feast sacred to Juno Lucina, who was the Goddess of childbirth, motherhood and

It was also a celebration of marriage, and the peace that these unions could usher in between Romans and Sabini, tribes from the mountain region near the Tibor.

Matronalia was thought to have been established by Romulus and it was the first day of the year.

Whenever a child was born in Rome, it was ordained by royal decree of Rex Servius Tullius that the parents must make an offering Juno Lucina'stemple.

  • Monday 1st November, Samonios, All Saints Day & World Vegan Day

01 Nov samoniasMonday 1st November starts the first month of the Celtic Year, called Samonios - 'Seed Fall'; mirroring the death/rebirth cycle of Asar (Osiris). We are still in the enegy of Samhain/Halloween today and we do have a 1 hr 40 mins recording available of our session yesterday detailing the Celtic Festival of Samhain plus a guided meditation with Keridwen to release issues which may be holding you back. The recording is £20 or £10 for our usual concessions using the online voucher. See Harmony Shop to order or email  for a payment link.

It is thought that two Roman festivals became incorporated with Samhain - 'Feralia', when the Romans commemorated the passing of the dead, and 'Pomona', when the Roman goddess of fruit and trees was honoured. The Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples is thought to derive from the ancient links with the Roman fruit goddess, Pomona, and a Druidical rite associated with water.

This is also All Saints Day in the Christian calendar.

The Samonios text below, by Helen Benigni, were kindly taken with permission some years ago from the angelfire.com website.

The month of SAMONIOS is a month of miraculous births beginning with the appearance of the twin stars of Castor and Pollux on the Eastern Horizon. These miraculously born twins, from an egg containing both mortal and immortal potential, bridge the gap between this world and the Otherworld with their appearance on the first quarter moon heralding the Holy Nights of Winter Solstice. Further into the month, a trio of stars including Rigel, Betelguese and Castor march across the sky to illiminate this Oenach of light and birth.

Literally translated as "seed fall," SAMONIOS is the month when the light of the Dagda, the seed of his loins, penetrates the womb of the earth and creates life. This light is symbolized by the sunrise of the Winter Solstice penetrating the inner chambers of the sacred mounds of the Neolithic peoples. At Newgrange, the sacred mound of the Bru na Boinne, the light of the Winter Solstice shines through a roof-box of white quartz for seventeen minutes to dramatically illuminate the cruciform chamber of the passage tomb. Here, the stone-carved geometric motifs common to trance states of shamanic ecstasy amplify the light in order that the observer may experience the light of life bestowed by the solar deity.

This solar alignment initiates the light half of the year. Mistletoe is hung as a symbol of the immortal love that the good father, Dagda brought to Boand, the goddess of the Bru na Boinne. Oengus, the son of their union and the Lord of the Sid mound, guards the entrance to the Otherworld and immortal life.

01 Nov World Vegan dayMonday 1st November is also World Vegan Day.  In 1994, the event was established by Louise Wallis, then Chair of The Vegan Society, UK, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of coining the terms "vegan" and "veganism" and the founding of the organisation. November is nominated as World Vegan Month.

Traditional festivals like this helped communities to feel connected, bringing balance and harmony into people's lives.

Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians, in the form of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy Healing, to bring balance and harmony. Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1 - a new series of virtual interactive training modules  starts 10th November for three consecutive Wednesdays withKhemitology, followed immediately with Mindful Chakra Balancing & Unity Consciousness commencing 1st December.

  • Monday 22nd February, Roman Festival of Caristia

Caristia 2Monday 22nd February is the Roman Festival of Caristia.

This was a Feast Day occasion of family reunion, when Roman fathers would pay special attention to their families.

It was a day of reconciliation when disagreements were to be set aside, but the satirical poet Ovid apparently suggested this would be best achieved by excluding family members who caused trouble.

Families gathered together to dine and offer food and incense to the Guardian Deities, collectively known as Lares.

The Ancient Romans believed that celebrating Caristia would enhance their family connections and hence improve their personal harmony and wellbeing.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. We have a new series of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1 Egyptian Alchemy healing courses started last Tuesday with Violet Flame and Khemitology (late starts accepted until next week two has aired).

  • Monday 24th June, Egyptian Burning of the Lamps ceremony

Isis (Auset) ImageMonday 24th June is the Egyptian Festival of the Burning of the Lamps which was held at Sais.

This is the third great festival in Sais to Aset (Isis). In an under-chapel beneath the temple, lamps were carried in procession around the coffin of Asar (Osiris).

It was by the power of light, symbolising the life-giving power of the Moon, that Aset rekindled life in her dead husband. The exact date is actually the 13th day of the Ancient Egyptian month of Epeiph, so confusion arises when trying to convert this to our Gregorian calendar and some sources give variations especially 21st June.

Wonderful and informative laminated poster of Aset (Isis) shown here, is by Jacqui Taliesin El Masry (Alkhemi.co.uk) available from us.  See our Egyptian Deity Poster page under Harmony Shop

  • Monday 24th May, Festival of the Three Marys in France

24 May Festival of the 3 MarysMonday 24th May is the Romani and Christian Festival of the Three Marys at Sainte-Maries-de-la-Mar, on the south coast of France.  Here landed Mary Magdalene, Mary Jacob (the sister of Mother Mary known in the Catholic faith as Our Lady) and Mary Salome (mother of James and John). A local Chieftain, Sara the Kali, had a vision of their arrival and by spreading her cloak over the rough sea ensured their safe arrival.

Sainte-Maries-de-la-Mar (Saint Marys of the Sea) is the capital of the Camargue (Provençal Occitan Camarga) in the south of France. Interestingly, it is noted on the Wikipedia page, that the village was noted as "Ra" in the 4th century AD by the Roman geographer Rufus Festus Avienus.

Ra being the Ancient Egyptian Deity also known as the Sun God, this could reinforce the idea that Mary Magdalene was actually of Egyptian origin (possibly from the southern area of Nubia, where the native people are very dark skinned) and could also have been the revered Black Madonna.

By keeping traditions, communities in Camargue retain a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. The next RSE 1 module series started 14th May with Violet Flame of Amenti and 17th May with Chakra Balancing, Axiatonal Alignment and Unity Consciousness. Late appliacants to both courses can still be accommodated as the teachings are recorded.

If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities following lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle later this month on Wednesday 26th May at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT+1), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee). • Monday 4th May, Veneration of the Thorn

Closeup of blackthorn - Photographer Martin OlssonMonday 4th May is the festival of the Veneration of the Thorn at which the Hawthorn is honoured. This is a festival of modern origin that may have been adapted from the Night of Lunantisidhe on Saturday 16th May, honouring the fairy spirits of blackthorns (Hawthorns are whitethorns).

Holy bushes and trees marking sacred places and wells are acknowledged and new scraps of cloth are tied to their branches.

  • Quinquatrus Roman Festival, Monday 19th March 2018

Image of MinervaMonday 19th March is the Roman Festival of Quinquatrus (also known as Quinquatria), the name being derived from it happening the 5th day after the Ides of March.

This was a Festival dedicated to Minerva when women were accustomed to consult fortune-tellers and diviners.

Both Festus and Varro indicate that the Quinquatrus was only celebrated for one day and hence ancient Roman religious calendars assign only one day to the festival.

Ovid, however, states that it was a five day celebration, hence the name. Apparently, on the first day no blood was shed, but on the last four there were gladiator contests.

For more, see Wikipedia on Quinquatrus and Minerva from where this Mosaic image of Minerva of the Peace was taken.

  • Roman Festival of Caristia, Friday 22nd February

381px Lar romano de bronce M.A.N. Inv.2943 01 Lara God worshipped for CaristiaFriday 22nd February is the Roman Festival of Caristia.

  • Samonios, All Saints Day, 1st November 2017

Pagan image of SamoniosWednesday 1st November starts the first month of the Celtic Year, called Samonios - 'Seed Fall'; mirroring the death/rebirth cycle of Asar (Osiris).

The Samonios image above and text below, by Helen Benigni, are kindly taken with permission from the angelfire.com website.

Further into the month shortly after the third quarter of the moon, a trio of stars including Rigel, Betelguese, and Castor march across the sky to illiminate this Oenach of light and birth.

  • Saturday 15th May, Roman Festival of Argei

Argei 15 MaySaturday 15th May is the Roman Festival of Argei. At this ceremony, 27 Argei (human-shaped bundles of rushes) are carried counter-clockwise throughout the city in a procession.

In a ritual probably done as a substitute for human sacrifice, the Vestal Virgins then throw the Argei into the Tiber from the Bridge of Sublicius.

By keeping traditions, communities in Ancient Rome retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. The next RSE 1 module series started 14th May with Violet Flame of Amenti (late applicants accepted) and 17th May with Chakra Balancing, Axiatonal Alignment and Unity Consciousness.

During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

  • Saturday 1st May, Celtic Pagan Beltane plus Roman Bona Dea

May Day BeltaneSaturday 1st May is May Day and Beltane - a Celtic word meaning 'fires of Bel' (Bel was a Celtic and Gaelic Deity). It is a fire festival that celebrates the coming of summer and the fertility of the coming year. Celtic Priests, as well as other high ranking officials in Celtic society, were called Druids. Celtic festivals often tied in with the needs of the community.

In springtime, at the beginning of the farming calendar, everybody would be hoping for a fruitful year for their fields and hence also their families. Beltane rituals would often include courting: for example, young men and women collecting blossoms in the woods and lighting fires in the evening.

These rituals would often lead to matches and marriages, either immediately or in the coming summer or autumn.

Beltane is one of the four Celtic seasonal festivals; along with Lughnasadh, Samhain and Imbolc.  See yesterday's Blog for more on the meaning and festivities of Beltane.

Bona Dea 1st MaySaturday 1st May was also the annual Roman Festival of Bona Dea. In Roman mythology, Bona Dea (literally "the good goddess") was the goddess of fertility, healing, virginity, and women.

She was the daughter (or wife/sister depending on sources) of the nature-god Faunus and was associated with supplying medicinal healing herbs in her temple garden.

Bona Dea was also invoked for freedom from slavery; many of her worshippers were freed slaves and plebeians, and many were women seeking aid in sickness or for fertility.

This Festival was celebrated by women only, with men being barred from any knowledge of her mysteries!

This would have comprised part of the six day Roman Festival of Floralia, commencing on 28th April (Julian Calender equivalent), detailed on my earlier Blog.

By keeping traditions, Celtic and Roman communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Joanna's Harmony Healing activities - not involving any rolling in the dew celebrations - are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life!

The next RSE 1 module series starts 14th May with Violet Flame of Amenti and 17th May with Chakra Balancing, Axiatonal Alignment and Unity Consciousness.

  • Saturday 4th December, New Moon & Supermoon @ 07:44 and Total Solar Eclipse

04 Nov New Moon SupermoonSaturday 4th December @ 07:43 is the New Moon, Supermoon and a total Solar Eclipse (only visible in Antartica but partially visible in South Africa and Namibia). More details at timeanddate.com. A solar eclipse happens whenever the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, hence partly or totally obscuring the Sun for anyone viewing from Earth. This eclipse will not be visible in London but will affect all of us energetically.

This December New Moon will have the closest alignment with lunar perigee – the moon's closest point to Earth in its monthly orbit – than any other 2021 supermoon.

If you feel connected to the lunar cycle, note that our next Full Moon  Unity Consciousnesss Guided Meditation (£20), 7.30-9.30pm (GMT) is on Saturday 18th December, when you will be guided though a mindful chakra healing programme, using colours and crystal energy. You will then be connected above (to the Sky) and below (to the Earth) to be part of the Harmony Healing Lightworker collective and start making a difference by sending regular global healing.

A Supermoon is when the moon appears larger in the sky because it is reaches the closest proximity to Earth (known as the perigee*) coinciding with the New Moon or Full Moon. Since the New Moon is only a sliver to the naked eye, the Full Moon Supermoons are much more of a visual treat, when the moon may appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than on any other Full Moon occasion. Although it may not seem all that noticeable to us and of course it will depend on good clear viewing conditions; however due to an optical illusion, it will always look bigger and more luminous when closer to the horizon.

*The moon orbits around the Earth in an ellipse which takes just over 29 days, meaning that it reaches points in the year when it is at its closest (perigee, when it is about 363,000 km away) and furthest (apogee, when it is about 405,500 KM) from our planet. Those old enough might be reminded of Bed Knobs and Broomsticks when Angela Lansbury mentions the perigee and apogee in one of her invocations!

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy. There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

New Moon is a good time to work on your Vision Board (downloadable instructions on this page) for 2022. Hopefully a move towards a world where we can move freely again and are enjoying a global economic recovery.

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the New moon (good for starting new projects) and Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

We are running a New Year New Vision mentoring programme through the first full lunar cycle of 2022. This includes distant attunements to the Moon (New Moons on 2nd January and 1st February plus Full Moon on 17th January), plus a ritual with the elements on the Imbolc ceremony (1st February) and ending on the Chinese New Year of the Tiger (1st February). Costing £155, more at the Harmony Website.

Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians, in the form of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy Healing, to bring balance and harmony. Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1 -our next interactive training course series continues next Wednesday, 8th December, but it recorded so it is possible to join and catch up.

Within Surrey, via Harmony In Nature, we facilitate Forest Bathing+ Sessions to help adults reconnect with nature and reap the therapeutic benefits.

Currently, MP3 meditations and distant readings and healings are proving popular and we offer Harmony Healing Vouchers for any value for use on Harmony Healing services  andHarmony in Nature vouchers for Forest Bathing vouchers (£35).

  • Saturday 9th May, Roman Festival of Lemuria

381px Lar romano de bronce M.A.N. Inv.2943 01 Lara God worshipped for CaristiaSaturday 9th May is date of the Roman Festival of Lemuria. Essentially, this was a ritual by the Master/Mistress of the House involving nine black beans(!) to honour the Lemures – restless and possibly malevolent spirits of those who died violent or unnatural deaths. Conversely, Lars were seen as benevolent Guardian Ancestors to be revered

The image to the left from Wikipedia shows, Lar holding a cornucopia from Lora del Rio (Axatiana) in Roman Spain, early 1st Century. The image, by Luis García, is reproduced, via Wikimedia Commons, by Creative Commons Licence.

I have speculated as to whether the Festival of Lemuria was also connected with the ancient land known as Lemuria - thought to have been located somewhere in the Pacific - and a hypothetical belief upheld by the Romans that the land might have been destroyed violently (legend says, rather like Atlantis, that a disaster such as flood or volcanic eruption caused its destruction).

By keeping traditions, Roman communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.
