  • Sunday 24th September, Jewish Holy Day of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)

The Adoration of the Golden Calf Picture from the Hortus deliciarum of Herrad of Landsberg 12th century

Sunday 24th September [2023] is Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) which is the Jewish day of repentance, probably the holiest and most solemn day of the year. In Israel, it is an annual holiday. There's no public transport, no form of media communication, and all businesses and shops are closed.

It takes place on the tenth day* of Tishrei, the seventh month. In the Western Calender, this means it will occur between 14th September and 14th October.

Yom Kippur commemorates the date Moses returned from Mount Sinai following forty-days of praying for the sins of the Israelites to be forgiven for worshipping the Golden Calf. On his return from Mount Sinai, the Israelites were granted atonement. Image of The Adoration of the Golden Calf is from the Hortus deliciarum of Herrad of Landsberg (12th century).

Jewish holy days begin at sundown of the night beforehand. Thus all holiday observances begin with fasting and recitation of Kol Nidre before sundown 4th October. This is called tosephet Yom Kippur, (fasting for some of the previous day is required by Jewish law), and ends after sunset the following day.

The central premise of Yom Kippur is atonement and reconciliation. It's customary to wear white as a symbol of purity.

Yom Kippur as a complete day of rest. Therefore, these five traditions are observed:

    1. No eating and drinking
    2. No wearing of leather shoes
    3. No bathing or washing
    4. No anointing oneself with perfumes or lotions
    5. No marital relations

It is believed that this action will return the body to its original state. All healthy men over 13 years or women over 12 years are expected participate.

Yom Kippur marks the end of ten Days of Awe(a penitential period) which starts with Rosh Hashanah; the season of repentance and prayer. On Rosh Hashanah, Jewish tradition believes that everyone's fate for the coming year will be inscribed by God into the Book of Life, and on Yom Kippur, the verdict is sealed.

A traditional Yom Kippur greeting is G’mar Hatimah Tovah (may you be sealed for a good year of life).  Resource: officeholidays.com

  • Sunday 28th April, Roman Festival of Floralia

Floralia 28th AprilSunday 28th April was the Roman fertility festival of flowers and crops called Floralia, that later developed into a celebration of sexuality, and may have influenced the subsequent celebrations for Beltane and May Day. Or it could have been the other way around...

According to Pliny (circa 240 BCE), celebrations were to solicit protection from the Goddess Flora, associated with flowers, blossoming plants and fertility.

The festival lasted for six days and incorporated Ludi Florae, the "Games of Flora". The revelry was much enjoyed by Plebeian members of Roman society and seems to have involved actresses performing naked as well as other racy behaviour. Brightly coloured clothes were worn (if any!), races and shows were performed.

Symbols of fertility such as deer and hares were let loose in the Circus Maximus to honour the Goddess as protector of fields and gardens (but not wild animals or woods) and, colourful garments were worn, rater than the customary white, during the festivities, some of which were nocturnal. Chickpeas (another symbol of fertility, also known as garbanzo beans) also were thrown to the Circus audience.

By keeping traditions, Roman communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

  • Sunday 31st October, Samhain or Halloween & meditation

Shutterstock Pagan Wheel InageSunday 31st October traditionally marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the Celtic and Pagan New Year. Samhain is Irish-Gaelic for 'the Summer's end', and is pronounced 'sow-in'.

We are running a Samhain/Halloween special celebration TODAY 2-4pm UK time (GMT) and meditation with the Celtic Goddess Cerridwen to release what is no longer serving you in your life. Joanna is co-hosting the session with Sarah Dennis. Sarah is a sacred celebrant and has studied in Glastonbury as a Priestess of Avalon and the Goddess and she's the resident Crystal Healer with the London College of Psychic Studies.  Cost is £20 for the 2 hours or half price to our usual concession audience of RSE graduates and previous Moon course participants. Select 31st October from the drop down options at the Harmony ShopInterested parties who can't attend the live session can register a booking and a link to the recording will  be sent out. The Samhain energies continue through 1st November - Celtic New Year.

Samhain represents the death of the summer sun god, Lugh. This festival celebrates Nature's cycle of death and renewal.  This is traditionally known as Halloween and is considered a time when the veil is thin between ours and other dimensions hence we can sense the presence of our ancestors more easily.

31 October Samhain HalloweenSamhain is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals; along with Lughnasadh, Imbolc and Beltane.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Samhain heralds the beginning of Winter when the world starts to darken and the days are getting shorter; the 'dark half' of the year and the demise of the sun's uplifting influence.

The crone, personified as Cailleach - the Queen of the Winter - was reborn on every All Hallows Eve, returning to bring the Winter and protect animals through the coldest months. She turned to stone on Beltane Eve, Beltane being 1st May.

According to clairvoyant, channel, spiritual teacher and author Edwin Courtenay

On Halloween (Samhain), the veil between the worlds is thin because the old Celtic year is ending and the new Celtic year about to begin. This day and night - not one thing or the other - is a luminal space used by the Spirits of the Dead to visit those they love who they have left behind.

In the Witches circle a door is opened in the East and the dead invited to walk through and commune with the living. In ancient days, plates were laid at the table and filled with food for the dead (a tradition still followed by some) the plate placed outside at the end of the night for the phantoms to feast on. On this day candles are lit and the loved ones gone before are remembered, grieved and loved. On this night the Horned Lord of the Witches rides with his ghostly troupe rescuing the lost and Earth bound Souls seeking peace.

The ghosts of Halloween are not Gouls and monsters but our relatives and friends, come not to terrify but to love. Welcome them then and share this night together and know that there is nothing to fear from the dead.

Edwin also explains what is meant by the 'veil is thin':

Midnight has always been known as the Witching Hour... but why?

Midnight is a luminal space - not quite one day or the other but rather a space between, a betwixt between and therefore a space close to the Spirit world and the Gods! There are other luminal moments of course - dawn and dusk and also luminal spaces such as thresholds, archways, wells and lakes. Places that are natural gateways, that harbour unseen things (like the evil eye - which is why we lift brides over thresholds - so the evil eye doesn’t see them) and other powers!

These moments are powerful then and the times when witches weave their spells - especially on Halloween night!!!

Traditional festivals like this helped communities to feel connected, bringing balance and harmony into people's lives. Neo-Pagan Druids acknowledge that Celtic folklore has its roots in Ancient Egyptian philosophies.

Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians, in the form of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy Healing, to bring balance and harmony. Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1 - a new series of virtual interactive training modules  starts 10th November for three consecutive Wednesdays withKhemitology, followed immediately with Mindful Chakra Balancing & Unity Consciousness commencing 1st December.

  • Sunday 3rd December, Roman Festival of Bona Dea

Roman Goddess CeresSunday 3rd December is the Roman Festival of Bona Dea, this being a smaller festival that the one celebrated on 1st May but similarly for women only. In Roman mythology, Bona Dea (literally "the good goddess") was the goddess of fertility, healing, virginity, and women. Some sources say it's the 4th December.

She was the daughter of the god Faunus and was associated with supplying medicinal healing herbs in her temple garden. Bona Dea was also invoked for freedom from slavery; many of her worshippers were freed slaves and plebeians, and many were women seeking aid in sickness or for fertility.  Her oracles were revealed only to females.

Men were not just prohibited from Her secret festival, they not even allowed to know Her name, let alone utter it. There were other restrictions during the worship of Bona Dea: drinking either wine or myrtle was taboo and could not be mentioned by name throughout Her secret festival, probably because they were both considered very powerful due to their sacred association with Her. Bona Dea may have been aspect of Ceres, another Roman Goddess illustrated here.

Celebrating traditional festivals like Bona Dea, helped Roman communities come together and bring balance and harmony into people's lives.

Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) has been modularised so that Level One (introduction) is now available to complete online as 3 units. All the units can be taken alone but together make up the RSE 1 syllabus. Violet Flame of Amenti started Thursday 30th November.

  • Sunday 4th April, Roman Festival of Magna Mater with parallels to Ancient Egyptian beliefs

Magna Mater 4th AprilSunday 4th April is Magna Mater (the Great Mother) in the Ancient Roman calendar, the festival of Cybele, Phrygian Great Earth Mother.

Her priests took on female identities and clothing to commemorate her lover (or in some sources her son) Attis, who, following a castration, died of the wounds but was subsequently resurrected.

Phrygia was a kingdom in what is now Asian Turkey, then part of Anatolia, centred on the Sangarios River. After its conquest, it became an important region within a succession of great empires.

The cult of Magna Mater is arguably the oldest religion of all, with stone-age sculptures featuring this mother-goddess, and a 6000-year-old idol found in Çatalhöyük, depicting her as a seated woman flanked by two leopards. This is the form in which She came to be venerated as Cybele in Phrygia.

The worship of this Goddess evolved over the millennia, but She remained a symbol of the powerful female forces in the universe. Many different interpretations developed, and various religious factions have interacted.

Not much is known about Her worship in ancient times, but the cult involving Her incarnation as Cybele, in ancient Phrygia, later evolved into the cult of Magna Mater in Rome.

The legend tells of a small child who was left die in the wildness, as a victim of the big cats which roamed the area.  However, instead of killing Her the lions and panthers nurtured her, allowing Her to develop into an intelligent, headstrong and beautiful woman.

Perhaps She was a child mage who was later deified. She was said to have invented pipes and drums, as well as magickal medicines which She used to heal sick children and other creatures in the Phrygian vicinity.

She befriended not only the local animals and people, but also the satyrs and other supernatural beings.

According to one myth, She fell in love with prince Attis, but their love-story has a tragic twist; the intense Divine love of Cybele was overwhelming for the mortal prince, who went insane, castrated himself and died. Cybele, subsequently driven mad by grief, roamed around to sound of pipes and drums seeking Her lost love. In some other versions of the story, Attis was Her son but he succumbed to the same grisly fate.

The links between this story and the cult of Auset/Aset/Isis/Inanna/Ishtar/Asherah are very apparent, and these cults influenced each other heavily. Attis was identified with Dumuzi, Tammuz, Ausar/Wzr (Osirus) and other dead and resurrected gods.

There are also obvious parallels with the story of Sekhmet (Khemitian lioness Goddess) and Het-Hert (Hathor), the alter-ego of Sekhmet, whose worship merged with that of Auset/Aset (Isis) in various periods of Egyptian history.  And similarly, the Essene Angel Camael, Guardian of Mars and Tuesdays, who is linked with the She Leopard.

In around 200 BCE, the holy black rock relic of the Goddess was moved from Her cult centre in the Phrygian city of Pessinos, to a new centre in Rome, where Her following flourished.

Seemingly, once in Rome, Cybele was merged with the Greek Goddess Rhea, and re-identified as Magna Mater, the Great Mother. Men, called Galli, who had castrated themselves in front of Her image, became Her Priests but most of the followers were women.

The cult plummeted into a somewhat depraved and ecstatic affair with only castrated men and women being allowed to attend the principal celebrations of the goddess, which quickly became associated with wild orgies. It was only protected from prosecution due to the protection of influential people.

The faction became led by the female priestesses and the Archigalli, the high priest of the subordinate Galli; the latter being responsible for most of the dance, divination and healing of the cult.

The worshippers gradually fragmented into fraternities, most notably the Dendrophori ("Tree-bearers") and Cannophori ("Reed-bearers"), with the liturgy of the cult being Greek.

Members of these fraternities enjoyed a degree of social influence and elevated status, gathering important followers. The ceremonies generally commemorated the deeds of Magna Mater and Her love for Attis; who represented the fertility and germination of the land. By his castration and death, the land was infused with new life. Again, much like the Auset (Isis)/ Auar/Wzr (Osirus) religion.

Many plays, known as ludi, were performed featuring carnivals with elaborate banquets and enthusiastic comedic performances.

One of the prime annual festivals was Megalesia, 4th-10th April. At the peak of the celebrations a taurobolium was performed, where a bull was castrated and sacrificed, and new initiates were baptised in its blood. Sadly, another parallel with the association of Asar/Wzr (Osirus) with the Bull Cult and Serapeum (where bull remains were mummified) and a possible connection with the later development of the European Bull Fights, which I really hope will soon be ended.

Caves, mountains and natural springs were sacred to Magna Mater, and Her temples were often built close to them. Women sought help from the Goddess, who favoured mothers and children, by sleeping in the temple. Midwifes were affiliated with the cult, and several of the priests were venerated as healers. Whereas the priestesses were more involved with Her tantric aspects, celebrating Her mysteries in secret. Little detail is known about them, other than that they were exclusively women. Eventually the cult vanished along with most other mystery beliefs of antiquity.

It seems another major festival was celebrated the 25th March to commemorate the castration and death of Attis. The Cannophori carried and Idol of Attis together with reeds and stalks to the temple. Once again, the taurobolium was performed, this time with the genitals of the bull being thrown into a cave (or well) consecrated to Magna Mater. After three days of grief and sorrow for Attis, the carnival returned with the Day of Joy, known as Hilaria, when Attis was resurrected, and fertility of the land was re-instated thanks to the power of Magna Mater.

Fascinatingly, this strongly resembles an Khemitian ceremony, thought to convert to October/November in our current calendar. Hilaria, usually connected to 3rd Novemberis also the name of the culmination of the Egyptian Festival of Isiaon the 28th October, when Isis (Aset) resurrected Osiris (Asar) by re-membering him; no doubt contributing to the definition of our word remember meaning to recall someone from memory. Co-incidence?  I don’t think so …

A number of virtual courses are now ready, details on Harmony Healing Virtual Events. Currently, due to Coronavirus, most events will be virtual hence distant readings and healings are proving popular. We don't recommend giving a reading or healing to another person, without first checking whether it would be welcomed.

Joanna offers distant intuitive readings (past life and/or aura readings) and distant 1-2-1 healings and virtual healing circles. We also have meditations available.

  • Sunday 5th February, Imbolc Snow Full Micro Moon @ 18:28 GMT

Copy of wolf moonSunday 5th February @ 18:28 is Full Moon. The February Full moon is also known as the Snow Moon and this month it's a Micromoon as well as being close to Imbolc 1st/2nd February).

See below for details of our Full Moon guided meditation at 7.30-9.30pm GMT on Sunday night, £20.

When a Full Moon (or a New Moon) coincides with the point in the Moon's orbit most distant from Earth (apogee) it called a Micromoon.

Because of the Moon's elliptical orbit around the Earth, one side of the path is closer to the Earth than the other.

The point in the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth is known as apogee, and the point closest to Earth is called perigee. The average distance between the Moon and Earth is 237,700 miles or 382,500 kilometers.

When a Full Moon (or a New Moon) occurs around apogee, it's called a Micromoon, Minimoon or Apogee Moon. It will appear smaller tham a usual Full Moon and up to 14% smaller than a Supermoon when the Full Mooin coincides with the perigee. Since we still have the Quadrantid Meteors in the sky, slightly less light pollution will be helpful for stargazers.

The Snow Full Moon image was created by Joanna for Harmony Healing.

The Native American tribes named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons. As mentioned above, they called the February Full Moon the Snow Moon. There isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. Why Native American tribes (and Medieval Europeans) are said to have referred to this as the Snow Moon is (and sometimes the Hunger Moon) as it was the snowiest month in North America and therefore harder to hunt. American Farmers have adopted these titles so that they are still used today.

Although the Celts, wth their Druid priests, were believed to have revered nature, the idea that they also had tree names for each Full Moon of the year, is neo-Pagan, having been introduced by Robert Graves in the 1948, which I find rather charming. So, according to Robert Graves's imaginings, this is the Rowan Moon (learnreligions.com). The Rowan is associated with the Fire Goddess Brigit revered at Imbolc earlier this month (1st/2nd February). Brigit protects mothers, families, the home and hearth fires rituals. The Rowan is connected with success, astral travel and personal power. It's viewed as a favourable time for self-dedication or for initiations; with a symbol carved into a piece of Rowan being considered protective. Rowan branches were used by Norsemen as protective rune staves.

Lunar Cycle imageBetween Full Moon and the next New Moon (2nd March) is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.  Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Through Harmony Healing, Joanna offers a wider spectrum of events designed to nurture your welbeing. If you are looking for regular spiritually enlightening activities which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have our monthly Full Moon Guided Healing Meditations. The next one is tonight, Sunday 5th February at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT). Participants all receive a deeply healing experience. Cost to participate is £20 by online BACS payment (£1 admin fee added for PayPal) or half price to RSE graduates. There are multi-buy packages for regular attendees. Book at the Harmony Shop.

  • Thursday 13th July, Birthday of Ra & Roman Games of Apollo

13 July Birthday of Ra full bodyThursday 13th July, according to some sources, was the Ancient Egyptian Festival to celebrate the Birthday of Ra

Since Ra was the God of creation this could be interpreted as the day man was created!

Ra, also sometimes known as Re was the Khemitian (Ancient Egyptian according to the oral traditions) deity of the sun.

By the Fifth Dynasty (circa in the 25th/24th centuries BCE), he had evolved into one of the most important gods in ancient Egyptian religion, identified predominantly with the noon-day sun. Ra was also believed to rule in all parts of the created world including over royalty, the sky, the Earth, plus even the underworld.

Since Ra was also associated with the Sun and healing, perhaps it is no coincidence that the Roman’s celebrated Apollo on the same (equivalent) date.

6 18 22 July FB sessions13th July in Roman Times was the culmination of the Games of Apollo. As early as 212 BCE 13th July was the celebration of Apollo as the God of Healing (especially during wars) but this later extended into an 8 day festival ending on 13th July.

Apollo was associated with the Sun and his twin Diana (Goddess of Hunting) was associated with the moon.

Apollo became significant among the Romans when Augustus Caesar, as a young man, chose Apollo as his own god, and attributed his victory over Antony and Cleopatra to Apollo’s superiority over the Egyptian Deities!

Augustus is said to have described Apollo as: “Governor of Roman destiny; master of the sun; archer; augur; averter of pestilence; and giver of sound morals to the young.”

By keeping traditions and celebrating national festivals, as well as starting new initiatives, communities retain a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing. If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we hold monthly Full Moon Guided Healing Meditations.During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. • Thursday 15th February, Lupercalia - Ancient Roman Festival

    lupercalia final

Thursday 15th February is Lupercalia in Ancient Roman tradition. Apparently, this was the popular ceremony of fertility, featuring naked men running through the street!  I can’t see this catching on in the UK climate!

Ancient inages show men dressed as dogs (or possibly Wolves since Lupus meant Wolf) and goats, Cupid and other personifications of fertility. Supposedly, the specially nominated priesthood for the occasion were called the Luperci ("brothers of the wolf"), and during the fertility ritual they paraded the streets around Rome either naked, or near naked, carrying strips of leather which were used to thrash in the direction of the gathered audience.

It was believed that any pregnant ladies struck by the whips would have an easier birthing process and any other ladies, whether considered barren or otherwise, would be granted fertility.

Hence, some say this ceremony was the precursor for Valentine’s Day (see entry below for 14th February).

The Ancient Romans believed that celebrating Lupercalia would enhance their fertility and hence improve their personal harmony and wellbeing.

Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians, in the form of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy Healing, to bring balance and harmony. Our interactive Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1 training course modules run periodically throughout the year, but study can start at any time.

  • Thursday 16th May, Pagan Festival of Lunantisidhe

LunantisidheThursday 16th May is the Night of Lunantisidhe, a Celtic Festival honouring the fairy spirits of blackthorns.

From a website called selkywolf.com (no longer live), which featured extracts from 'A Witch's Guide to Faery Folk' by Edain McCoy, it seems that Lunantisidhe is a curious blending of the Latin word 'Luna' meaning 'moon' together with the Gaelic 'sidhe' which means 'faery'. They are the guardians of the blackthorn tree from which humans (and Leprechauns!) make shillelaghs, a walking stick indigenous to Ireland

These fairies are - according to an AngelFire site - 'Wizened little stick creatures with long arms and fingers for climbing between the thorns'. Their sole purpose for existing seems to be to protect the blackthorn trees from human encroachment. The only time they approach the tree is to pay homage to the Moon Goddess at the Esbats (a specifc Full Moon Wicca Ceremony which may have it's origins in Celtic folklore), perhaps explaining why their name has a lunar connotation.

According to another very informative site ecoenchantments.co.uk, unlike the majority of great mystic trees, the Blackthorn appears to be revered only in the British Isles (Celtic folklore of both Itish and Scottish tradition) with there being little or no association with the mythical traditions of other ancient civilisations.

The Blackthorn, latin name Prunus Spinosa, is a tree of profound magical lore in the Celtic tradition. It is one of the designated Eight Chieftain Trees on the Ogham Tract, where its name is Straif (strife, said to be where the word came from in the English dictionary) and translates as ‘Increaser of Secrets.’  I feel it brings a whole new meaning to 'trouble and strife' the Cockney rhyming slang for wife!

The Blackthorn is also know as sloe (after its fruit), sloe plum, snag, spiny plum, wishing thorn, faery tree, (dark) mother of the woods, pear hawthorn. Within the UK, the trees are an ancient, native pioneer species, with evidence that the fruits were eaten by early man. Blackthorn was used in Iron Age communities (c3400 yrs ago) as remains have been found, buried in a straw filled pit (believed to be used for ripening and preserving the bitter sloes) near Glastonbury in the Lake Village (recorded in a catalogue of findings by the excavator Arthur Bulleid).

Blackthorn is also wellknown for its medicinal benefits, having been catalogues by both herbalists, John Gerard in 1597:  ‘The juice of sloes do stop the belly, the laske and bloodie fluxe, the inordinate course of womens terms, and all other issues of blood in man or woman.’

Whilst Nicholas Culpeper, in 1653, recommends a decoction of the powdered bark of the roots, or of the fresh or dried berries as a cure for ‘lask of the belly , or stomach, or the bloody flux, and to ease the pains in the sides or bowels.’  He also recommended a distilled liquid of the flowers steeped in a highly honeyed mead, which he described as 'A most certain remedy, tried and approved, to ease all manner of gnawing in the stomach, sides and bowels, or any griping pains in any of them, to drink a small quantity when the extremity of the pain is upon them.’

Undoubtedly Sloe Gin is still enjoyed today (made annually by my husband's Uncle Ron, aged 83, with sloes collected from the countryside). Perhaps the continued popularity is due to its therapeutic benefits.

As part of the Lunantisidhe festivities, holy trees marking sacred places and wells are acknowledged and new scraps of cloth are tied to their branches.

By keeping traditions, Pagan communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

  • Thursday 1st March/Friday 2nd March, Full Moon

    Thursday 1st March/Friday 2nd March @ 00.52 (Thursday night/Friday morning) is the Full Moon.

Between Full Moon and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

Click here foAngela McGerr's Full Moon Meditation with Gabriel. Image of Angel Gabriel (above left) by Richard Rockwood, is taken from Angela McGerr's Harmony Angel cards; signed copies area available from the Harmony Shop.

Due to the rare way the dates have fallen this year, we had two Full Moons in January, none on February and two again in March. Tonight's Full Moon is nicknamed the Worm Moon!  The 2nd Full Moon this month, on the 31st March, will be another Blue Moon according to the more recent definition, as it will be the 2nd Full Moon in this calendar month.  This month, the 2nd moon fixes the date for Easter, as Easter Sunday is always immediately after the first full moon following the Equinox (Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere).  So Easter Sunday will be 1st April.

The Worm Moon, was so named by the Native American tribes who named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons.  there isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. Some Native Americans identified the Worm Moon with earthworm casts appearing as the spring warmth develops and hence the birds finding their food. Other tribes knew it as the Crow Moon, Lenten Moon and Sap Moon. American Farmers have adopted these titles so that they are still used today. (See article in the Telegraph for more on this)

Similarly, the Celts also had names for each Full Moon of the year. This is the Ash Moon.  As mentioned in my earlier Blog about the naming of Ash Wednesday, one of Odin's names in Norse is Ygg, which also means Ash, with the World tree, Yggdrasil, being an Ash.  Odin's spear was made from this tree. The Druids, venerated all nature but the three most sacred trees to them was the Ash, Oak and Thorn. The Ash tree features a great deal in Irish and Scottish folklore (the latter also including the Rowan, a form of Mountain Ash).  In the 12th Century, Marie de France wrote one of her famous lais about the Ash. The Ash is associated with rituals, magic and prophesy, making it a perfect choice for divining. Indeed, traditionally, more tools were made from Ash than any other wood, because it's not only very strong but it also resists shock (better than other hard woods such as oak or beech) making it an ideal choice for tool handles.  Ash berries were placed inside a baby's cradle to prevent the child being replaced with a 'changeling'.  More about this at the Celtic Weirdness website I happily stumbled upon.

Whilst writing this Blog article I wondered if our word 'ash' for something burnt was derived from the possible act of burning the magical tools (made predominantly of Ash) in an attempt to destroy the power of the Celtic Priests.

  • Thursday 22nd February, Roman Festival of Caristia

Caristia 2Thursday 22nd February is the Roman Festival of Caristia. Ths year it's also Ash Wednesday in Christian Tradition, see separate blog entry.

This was a Feast Day occasion of family reunion, when Roman fathers would pay special attention to their families.

It was a day of reconciliation when disagreements were to be set aside, but the satirical poet Ovid apparently suggested this would be best achieved by excluding family members who caused trouble.

Families gathered together to dine and offer food and incense to the Guardian Deities, collectively known as Lares.

The Ancient Romans believed that celebrating Caristia would enhance their family connections and hence improve their personal harmony and wellbeing.

  • Thursday 23rd & Wednesday 29th November, Egyptian Festivals of Khoiak & Nehebkau

23 Nov KhoiakThursday 23rd November is the Egyptian celebration Khoiak and Nehebkau on Wednesday 29th November. The Egyptian Year was split into three seasons (divided into 4 months of 30 days), commencing with Akhet in early August, then Peret from late November to early April and Shomu from early April until mid July.  Khoiak was a sombre celebration to complete the first season; later associated with the death of Asar (Osiris).  However, it was followed closely by Nehebkau - marking the start of the next season Peret - and was seen as a kind of rebirth process.

A laminated poster of Wzr (Ausar, Osirus) shown right by Jacqui Taliesin El Masry of Alkhemi.co.uk is also available from the Harmony Shop along with other Egyptian Deity posters by Jacqui.

Ka image purple29th November is the Ancient Egyptian celebration  of  Nehebkau, which literally meant 'he who unites the Kas'; the Ka being the body double which we might interpret as spirit or soul. See the upstretched arm Ka image to left, illustrated by Peter Lomas.

Nehebkau was depicted in the form of a snake with arms and legs and occasionally wings!  He was yet another Deity associated with protection and magic.

Ancient Egyptian Traditional festivals like this helped local communities feel connected, bringing balance and harmony into people's lives.

  • Thursday 25th January, Wolf Full Moon @ 17:54 GMT, our meditation at 7.30-9.30pm in Burns Night in Scotland

    Wolf Moon image

Thursday 25th January @ 17:54 is Full MoonThe January Full moon is also known as the Wolf Moon. See below for details of our Full Moon guided meditation at 7.30-9.30pm GMT on tonight.

The Native American tribes named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons. As mentioned above, they called the January Full Moon the Wolf Moon. There isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. Why Native American tribes (and Medieval Europeans) are said to have referred to this as a Wolf Moon is thought to be because hungry wolves howled more at this time of year since less food was available. American Farmers have adopted these titles so that they are still used today. (See article in the Telegraph for more on this).

The Rowan, known by the Celts as Luis (pronounced lou-ish). The Rowan is associated with the Fire Goddess Brighid revered at Imbolc earlier this month (1st/2nd February). Brighid protects mothers, families, the home and hearth fires rituals. The Rowan is connected with success, astral travel and personal power. It's viewed as a favourable time for self-dedication or for initiations; with a symbol carved into a piece of Rowan being considered protective. Rowan branches were used by Norsemen as protective rune staves. 🍒

Lunar Cycle imageBetween Full Moon and the next New Moon (10th February) is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

The next one is Thursday 25th January at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT). Participants all receive a deeply healing experience. Cost to participate is £20 by online BACS payment (small admin fee added for PayPal) or half price to RSE graduates. There are multi-buy packages for regular attendees. Book at the Harmony Shop.

Our New Year New Moon New Vision mentoring programme is now half way through the first full lunar cycle of 2024.

Burns Night 25 January25th January is also Burns Night in Scotland.

Burns Night is a revered date in the Scottish calendar and celebrates, on the anniversary of his birthday, the life and works of their national Bard, Robert Burns.

Born a little over 250 years ago; some consider his best known poem as ‘Auld Lang Syne’, though others believe he did not write it himself, but was the first person credited with writing it down for posterity as part of his attempt to preserve Scottish traditional songs.

The evening centres on the entrance of the haggis (a type of sausage made from a sheep's stomach) on a large platter to the sound of ceremonial bagpipes.

When the haggis is on the table, the host reads the "Address to a Haggis". This is an ode that Robert Burns wrote to the Scottish delicacy!

At the end of the reading, the haggis is ceremonially sliced into two pieces and the meal begins.

Amongst other works, Burns also write the famous 'Ode to a Louse':

O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us

To see oursels as ithers see us!

It wad frae mony a blunder free us,

    An' foolish notion:

What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,

    An' ev'n devotion!

This is generally translated into modern language as:

And would some Power give us the gift

To see ourselves as others see us!

It would from many a blunder free us,

    And foolish notion:

What airs in dress and gait would leave us,

    And even devotion!

  • Thursday 2nd & Friday 3rd June, The Queen's Platinum Jubilee & Spring Bank Holiday in the UK

Platinum JubileeThursday 2nd/Friday 3rd June is the delayed Whitsun Bank Holiday to mark the Queen's Jubilee weekend early June.

Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee (70 years of service). In 2022, most workers in the United kingdom will have two days off work (and it's school half term) and the banks will be closed.

Normally the Whitsun break is known as the Late May bank holiday and falls on the last Monday of May but it used to be on the Monday after Pentecost.

If you have children, weather permitting (avoid woodland locations in heavy winds), it's a great day to take them out on a nature trail at a local park, beauty spot, National Trust or woodland location.

May Day Bank HolidaIn the last 30 years, evidence originally collected from Japan but with more and more global corroboration, has shown that spending time in nature, mindfully, and engaging the senses, has a measurable therapeutic affect (see the Forest Bathing+ section of this site on the purple navigation bar above for more about this concept and Surrey events we are offering for adults). As qualified Forest Bathing+ Guides, we are able to offer some suggestions on how to engage children with nature in a fun way that will also benefit their health and wellbeing.

To appreciate the complete healing experience of nature, you will be encouraging them to stay still in places. Make sure you have lots of spare layers to keep them warm, and maybe pack a flask of hot drink. Don’t be put off if the weather isn't sunny, pack some waterproof trousers and take a waterproof picnic rug for sitting on the ground, plus some spare dry socks. You'll need some water too and I recommend a wet flannel in an old sandwich box, great for dirty hands later!

Instilling respect and care for nature means we need to take thoughtful actions for the environment such as leaving things as we find them and always taking any litter home with you.

Once you've persuaded your kids into their decent walking shoes, or even wellies, here are some ideas from our forest bathing practice to help you turn the experience into more than just a pleasant walk in the woods. Of course, these can work for adults too...

Start by turning off all electronic devices!  Yes, I know, a big ask in today's society, but essential if you really want to observe the minutiae of what is going on around you.

Try to move slowly through the forest, so you don't miss anything, really encourage the children to concentrate and notice the details around them.

HE 30th May 2021Find somewhere to base yourselves for a while, put down your picnic mat or take some fold up chairs with you. Take some nice deep breaths, extending your outbreath to match or even exceed the inbreath; this helps your body relax. This is especially helpful of they are somewhat boisterous, but they still need extra calming, you can spend a few minutes getting them to tense, for a count of three, and relax each part of their body. Start with the feet, ankles and knees, moving up upwards (tensing the buttocks always guarantees a giggle or two), through the chest, shoulders, arms and fists, and ending with the face. Smiling as strong as you can and then releasing the mouth and ending by scrunching their eyes tight shut and then opening them again.

Engage the children by focussing on the senses.  What can you see, hear, smell, touch?

Things to see, hear & touch

Look out for woodland wildlife. If you have competitive children, you can keep a score of what you see - 5 points for animals such as squirrels and birds, 10 for deer, 1 for insects, such as beetles, bugs, woodlice and butterflies.

Watch a particular spot for a few minutes and see how much movement is taking place even on a calm day with minimal wind. Can you identify the sounds that accompany the movement?

Untitled designLook at the many different shades of green, how many can you spot?

Notice the many varied textures around you. You can encourage the children to touch mosses and bark, but make sure they wipe their hands afterwards (hence the flannel). The image on the left shows Joanna and Katie (who together run Harmony In Nature) examining the texture of tree mosses and lichens at Newlands Corner, Guildford.

Here in the UK, April was so hot woth May being intermittantly wet and cold that the bluebells, which are usually pretty much long gone by now. These have a lovely delicate scent.  Image above right, taken 24th April, shows bluebells at Harry Edwards, Shere. However, I've seen lots of elderlower in blossom (normally a May delight) and some early honeysuckle, both of which carry a beautiful fragrance.

You can suggest they imagine what it is like to be a tree, with their roots firmly planted in the ground and unable to run around.

It can be fun to make a game of familiarising ourselves with different tree species, teaching your children how to identify oak leaves and the wide canopy and stately trunk of most English Oaks and to spot the pale bark of the silver birch, and the distinctive leaves of the sycamore and chestnuts. You can revisit this activity later in the year when the acorns, twizzling sycamore seeds, conkers and sweet chestnuts are more apparent.

Persevere for as long as you feel comfortable and are enjoying the activities. Whilst an adult session should last two to three hours for maximum wellbeing benefit, for children that might be too long. Aim for twenty minutes to an hour depending on your children's age and their concentration span.

Fun family activities, especially in the tranquil setting of nature, can be really beneficial for your health and wellbeing.

This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme. Book at thHarmony Shop.

  • Thursday 4th April, Roman Festival of Magna Mater with parallels to Ancient Egyptian beliefs

Magna Mater 4th AprilThursday 4th April is Magna Mater (the Great Mother) in the Ancient Roman calendar, the festival of Cybele, Phrygian Great Earth Mother.

  • Thursday 9th May, Roman Festival of Lemuria

381px Lar romano de bronce M.A.N. Inv.2943 01 Lara God worshipped for CaristiaThursday 9th May is date of the Roman Festival of Lemuria. Essentially, this was a ritual by the Master/Mistress of the House involving nine black beans(!) to honour the Lemures – restless and possibly malevolent spirits of those who died violent or unnatural deaths. Conversely, Lars were seen as benevolent Guardian Ancestors to be revered.

Traditionally, a sacred salted flour cake (mola salsa), was baked from the initial ears of wheat of the season, by the Vestal Virgins.

According to Ovid (living circa 43 BCE - 17 CE), Lemuria was derived from Remuria by Romulus to appease the murdered spirit of Remus (Ovid, Fasti, V.421ff; Porphyrius). Ovid records that the custom to appease/expel the evil spirits at this festival involved walking barefoot and throwing the black beans over the shoulder at night. The head of the household was responsible for getting up at midnight and treading bare foot around the house throwing out black beans and incantating, "Haec ego mitto; his redimo meque meosque fabis (I send these; with these beans I redeem me and mine)" a total of nine times. The household would then clang bronze pots together whilst repeating nine times an incantation translating as "Ghosts of my fathers and ancestors, be gone!"

This rendered the whole month of May as unlucky for marriages and led to the Roman proverb "Mense Maio malae nubunt (Bad girls wed in May)".

Interestingly, in Celtic & Pagan lore, with Beltane being 1st May, this would have been a traditional month in which to marry, demonstrating a reversal of traditional beliefs.

I have speculated as to whether the Festival of Lemuria was also connected with the ancient land known as Lemuria - thought to have been located somewhere in the Pacific - and a hypothetical belief upheld by the Romans that the land might have been destroyed violently (legend says, rather like Atlantis, that a disaster such as flood or volcanic eruption caused its destruction).

By keeping traditions, Roman communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Panegyric of IsisTuesday 14th May is the Panegyric of Isis (Aset) Egyptian Celebration, when Asar (Osiris) was found and Aset (Isis) duly celebrated. Offerings of bread, wine and milk are made and Auset is traditionally praised for her gifts.

It is a time for celebrating successful quests in life. From Isadorus, Hymn III:

O Isis, the Great, God's mother, Lady of Philae,
    God's Wife, God's Adorer, and God's Hand,
God's mother and Great Royal Spouse,
Adornment and Lady of the Ornaments of the Palace.

Lady and desire of the Green Fields,
Nursling who fills the palace with her beauty,
Fragrance of the palace, mistress of joy,
Who completes her course in the Divine Place.

Rain-cloud that makes green the fields when it descends,
Maiden, sweet of love, Lady of Upper and Lower Egypt,
Who issues orders among the divine Ennead,
According to whose command one rules.

Princess, great of praise, lady of charm,
Whose face enjoys the trickling of fresh myrrh.
