  • Angels - not just for Christmas

This Guest Blog by Joanna Bristow-Watkins first appeared at Wonderful World of Wellbeing online.

Angel Gabriel by Richard Rockwood from Angela McGerrs Harmony Angel CardsThis morning, as the last lyrics of ‘Hark the Herald, Angels Sing’ faded away on my car radio, I was briefly transported back to 1998. I could hear my Reiki teacher recommending that I call in the Parking Angel should I need to a manifest a space in an overflowing car park. Frankly, at the time, I thought she‘d lost the plot; as surely angels were ‘just something for Christmas’.

Describing myself as spiritual rather than religious, I can appreciate the supportive role institutional religions can play in the community but personally I’ve never felt aligned with the strict doctrines to which some faiths expect believers to comply. So, on reflection, I wonder whether that was my initial resistance to involving angels in my life.

I’m embarrassed to admit, that at the time, I found the beaming, winged and chubby pre-Raphaelite image of Caucasian angels a little hard to take seriously other than as an adornment on the annual festive greeting cards.

My sister Angela McGerr was on the same 1998 Reiki Mastery course. Her attitude was markedly different to mine. She told me later her first reaction was not to ‘call in’ anything that she couldn’t fully understand. So, she decided to investigate them. And that’s exactly what she did, almost obsessively for the next 18 months. In fact, she later admitted that she suspects she was hi-jacked by the angels themselves to create a way of making angels accessible in today’s fast-paced society.

17 years later, in 2015, Angela’s 10th angel book was published, and with cumulative sales nearing one million copies, she was firmly established as a UK best seller in this niche market. She’s since retired from designing angel card sets and writing books but continues to be involved with all things angelic.

So how did she win me round? Initially my ‘interest’ was purely sisterly support of her growing fascination and success, and I was still lukewarm (to say the least) on a personal level. But over time, I came to appreciate the accuracy of her angel readings and their loving support in my life. Now they are an important feature of my mentoring programme and practitioner teaching courses.

The first step was to realise that angels have a much longer history of interaction with humanity than we might think, they certainly pre-date most of our contemporary organised religions.

    Angels in Contemporary Culture

Many people are familiar with the angels in the Christmas story, especially Gabriel, central to the story of the birth of Jesus Christ in the Christian faith. However, Gabriel also appears as an archangel in the Jewish faith, first described in the Hebrew Bible.

The traditional Shema prayer of the Jewish faith sites Gabriel as one of four archangels called on for protection through the night. A translation would be:

Michael to my right side, Gabriel to my left, Uriel before me, and Raphael to my back.”

Indeed, Muslims assert that the Quran was orally dictated by God to the final prophet, Muhammad, through the Angel Gabriel (known to them as Jibril). They believe this took place, in stages, over a period of some 23 years, commencing when Muhammad was 40, in month of Ramadan; and concluding in 632, the year of his death.

The Nativity is where many people of the Christian faith, whether Protestant, Catholic or other (or no faith!) will first be introduced to angels. Gabriel is one of the most sought-after parts in any school Nativity!

Returning to the aforementioned cherubic angel images, these are purely representations by the artists of the time so that they could tell a visual story, both in murals and fine examples such as the celebrated fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, Italy.

Where did that idea come from? And why are they so often blond and Caucasian in appearance?

Leaving aside the politics of the time, and possible colonial influence, these depictions were an attempt of the current popular culture to represent beings that are much, much older.

The concept of angels predates Christianity by more than four thousand years. Winged figures were depicted in the earliest recorded civilisation (Sumeria, circa 4000 BC) and Colonel Churchward reported the first glyph representations of angels as being even earlier, in Lemuria, though the existence of Lemuria is not universally accepted. It seem that the term angelology, stems from the Essenes, a healing sect living in the Dead Sea area contemporary with Jesus.

It may be that our conventional interpretation comes from our brain’s need to recognise what it is seeing as a familiar sight – a bright light surrounding a ‘floating and wraithlike being’ may well be interpreted as a halo and wings. Perhaps this even started with Mary herself, in her attempt to explain what would have been an almost impossible experience to relate to others.

Angel Raphael by Richard Rockwood from Angela McGerrs Harmony Angel CardsSo, what are angels?

My personal interpretation of angels is as ethereal light beings, a construct shared by many others including my sister Angela, who chose to represent angels in her Harmony Angel Cards and other richly illustrated publications (sadly mostly now out of print, though I still have some signed unused and pre-loved editions available at the Harmony Shop) as images blending the colours and talismans associated with each angel in folklore with the suggestion of feathered wings, rather than humanoid depictions.

That’s not to say that any other representations are of any less value – perhaps the angels themselves chose to represent themselves in a way that we humans could connect with, as one consensus that most people can agree on is that angels are benevolent and seek to help us.

On the whole, they are androgenous beings, though some carry more masculine or feminine traits than others. Did you know, that despite our traditional view, Gabriel may well represent more of a feminine energy than a masculine? Gabriel is in fact the Angelic Guardian of the moon and Mondays (the weekdays governed by the moon). In mythology, whereas the sun is depicted as masculine, the moon is viewed as a feminine energy.

    Calling on Angels

Perhaps this is a particularly good time of year to call on angels to assist you with finding peace, and with receiving and offering good will. Especially this year when everything is in turmoil and constant flux.

However, you can in fact call on angels to assist you at any time of year, provided it’s for the highest good and you are respectful and appreciative of their loving intent, hence not asking them for anything which would harm others.

To find out more about connecting with angels in your day-to-day life, you can join us for our New Year New Visionmentoring course (link to https://bit.ly/NewYearNewVision2021 ).

  • Friday 19th February, Kissing Friday

Kissing Friday by DarkWorkX from PixabayFriday 19th February is Kissing Friday. The days leading up to and into Lent were Collop Monday, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Fritter Thursday and Kissing Friday (source: Lia Leendertz's2020 Almanac).

According to historic.co.uk, this bizarre custom was especially popular in the Victorian and Edwardian period and only died out in the mid-20th century. Although unthinkable these days, a schoolboy could kiss a girl on this day without fear of repercussions.

Of course, first of all the girl had to be caught and in some instances this involved tying ropes across the street and passing girls would have to pay a kiss for safe passage across the rope. Others would simply chase the girls until they caught them. Indeed, Kissing Fridaywas also the one day every year when girls could leave school early, to avoid being chased home by the boys.

In the Leicershire village of Sileby, this day was called Nippy Hug Day. Here, if the girl actively resisted a kiss, the boy could 'louse' (pinch) her bottom, a disturbing reference to the action of pinching off lice.

Similarly, in areas of Cumbria, the day was known as Nippy Lug Day, where the custom involved pinching the ears.

The date of Lent - which takes place in either February or March but always seven weeks before Easter - varies from year to year according to the lunar calendar which determines when Easter falls. The fact that Lent, and indeed Easter, are determined by the lunar calendar tends to suggest that they were superimposed over Pagan celebrations.

The Council of Nicaea, in 325 AD, approved a 40-day fast duration to celebrate Lent. This was the time period during which Constantine was striving for a harmonious union between the Christians and Pagans within the Roman Empire.

The start date of Lent was still under debate even after the Council of Nicaea. Pope Gregory, in 601, moved the commencement of Lent to Ash Wednesday (from the fourth Sunday of the year); this being 46 days before Easter. This allowed for 40 days of fasting with the six Sundays counting as feast days, making a total of 46 days for Lent. The tradition of using ashes to create the shape of a cross on parishioners foreheads was also instigated by Pope Gregory.

See bibleinfo.com,beaconoftruth.com, plant-lorecomwebsites for references. The latter two websites are not hypelinked because they flag up as insecure.

By partaking in old traditions such as Kissing Fridaycommunities retain a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Aligning ourselves with other members of the community through mutual celebration is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Friday 23rd April - St George's Day & Shakespeare's Birthday

220px Flag of England.svgFriday 23rd April is St George’s Day in England, celebrating St George, England's patron saint. The anniversary of his death, which is on April 23rd, is seen as England's national day.

According to legend, he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess.  The flag of England is the red Cross of St. George, and this is widely displayed as a symbol of national identity.

Surprisingly, 23rd April is not a Bank Holiday.

William ShakepeareWilliam Shakespeare - long revered as Britain's, if not the world's, best known author and playwright, also died on 23rd April, but in 1616, in Stratford-upon-Avon, making this the 405th Anniversary.

He was Baptised in Stratford on the 26th April 1564 and his birth date is not known but it is traditionally observed on 23rd April, Saint George's Day, indicating that he would have died on his birthday.

This date, which can be traced back to an 18th-century scholar's mistake, has proved appealing to biographers, it being considered somewhat poetic that he died on his 42nd birthday.

Shakespeare has 37 plays and 154 sonnets credited to him, but we don't really know whether he actually wrote them, or was just a merchant, land owner and occasional actor who either brokered the plays or was prepared to be acknowledged as the author to protect anonymity of those truly responsible.

Certainly writing plays could be dangerous as any plot seen to reflect a political plot not appreciated by the Queen/King could be interpreted as treason.

Many scholars argue, quite reasonably, that proof of Shakespeare’s authorship is largely circumstantial and sketchy at best; certainly he was better known in Stratford as a businessman [one documented view is that he brokered the plays] and not a playwright.

Celebratiing national and cultural heroes is a great way of uniting communities, bringing harmony into their lives.

  • Friday 5th November, Guy Fawkes Night in the UK

05 Nov Guy Fawkes NightFriday 5th November,here in the UK, is Guy Fawkes night, where we set off fireworks and have massive bonfires, with a sinister tradition of burning the effigy of a 'Guy'.

Some sources indicate that this replaced the Samhain Fire Festival, which was transferred in Britain to the night after the Gunpowder Plot - Guy Fawkes's attempt to blow up parliament in 1605. The ritual burning of the Guy certainly resembles the Pagan sacrifice of the corn king!

Traditional festivals like this helped communities to feel connected, bringing balance and harmony into people's lives.

  • Monday 10th January, Plough Monday in British Tradition

Plough Monday the Monday after EpiphanyMonday 10th January is Plough Monday in England!  Traditionally Plough Monday (the Monday after Epiphany when The Zoroastrian Magi visited the infant Jesus) is the day for setting aside the remnants and excesses of Christmas and "putting one's hand to the plough"; in other words, starting work on a project of some sort.

A traditional delicacy from Norfolk, eaten on Plough Monday, is known as 'Plough Pudding', which is a boiled meat, onions and suet pudding.

In some areas of the UK, particularly in Northern and East England, traditionally this was the day folk went back to work after the Christmas festivities. There were regional variations in the customs observed on Plough Monday, but commonly a plough would be hauled in a procession from house to house, collecting money. Musicians, such an old woman or a "Bessy" - a boy dressed as an old woman - with a man playing the role of the "fool" would accompany the plough.

Amongst the more bizarre UK traditions, across the Isles of Scilly (off the Cornish Coast), locals would visit their neighbours, cross-dressed, and make jokes about local events. There would be general revelry and dancing in disguise, which became colloquially known as Guise Dancing or Goose Dancing!

Although Plough Monday customs declined over a hundred years ago, in some areas they are being revived, such as at Malden in Essex where Molly Dancingis carried out. This seems to have derived from the recent revival by the Cambridge Morris Men,associated with the Whittlesea Straw Festival (held near Peterborough in Camridgeshire) which is also held to honour Plough Monday.

Aligning ourselves with community celebrations is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Saturday 27th March, UK clocks go forward tonight

Clocks go forward 1 hourSaturday 27th March, in the UK this year, is also when the clocks go forward, in fact at 01.00 on Sunday 28th Marchit becomes 02.00, and that is the start of British Summer Time (BST).

Here in the UK, the clocks first went forward over 100 years ago, under the Summer Time Act 1916. Although the original campaign was proposed by builder William Willett who was a keen golfer of the time (perhaps to get an extra hour of play in the evening). Other sources say it was for the benefit of farmers, but the final decision was probably driven by potential energy savings with WWI taking place.

UK clocks go forward to operate BST (known internationally as DST = Daylight Saving Time) from the final Sunday in March until they go back one hour on the final Sunday in October. Then the UK returns to Greenwich Mean Time GMT (also now known as Universal Time). Putting the clocks back in the Winter (October - March) gives more light in the mornings when children are setting off for school.

It never ceases to amaze me that the World Time is based on the UK. I suppose that is a testament to the power of the British Empire when it was decided to formally co-ordinate time across the globe. Indeed, it was Sir George Airey, in 1851, who was responsible for the prime meridian being based at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, in London, England. Amongst the 25 nations represented at the International Meridian Conference, hosted at Washington DC, the location of ‘zero longitude’ being centred at Greenwich was decided by popular vote. However, France abstained and for several decades thereafter French maps continued to refer to the Paris meridian.

Although there is no scientific evidence to support the practice of DST, it does seem that aligning ourselves with extra sunshine helps to bring balance and wellbeing into our lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. We have programmes designed to help you keep aligned with our natural environment and the movements of our planet, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, bringing balance into their lives. Our New Moon New Vision lunar cycle alignment programme starts again on 12th April and will take in Beltane plus the 555 numerology (5 means expansion) of the 5th May. See YouTube for informational video with feedback from previous participants.

If you are looking for regular spiritually enlightening activities during lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle later this month on Sunday 28th March, at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT+1), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee). During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness, and we make a positive difference in the world (see this Youtube footage for explanation of how this affects the global situation). This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

If you would like to experience one of our spiritual offerings (meditation, reading, 1:1 healing, a Forest Bathing+ session or a full mentoring course), why not ask for a Harmony Healing gift voucherfor a birthday or other celebratory occasion?

  • Saturday 29th February, Leap Day 2020

Leap Day Image by Peter LomasSaturday 29th February is a Leap Day. During Leap Years, such as 2020, an extra Leap Day - or Intercalary Day - is added on 29th February. Although officially introduced by Pope Gregory XIII, by a decree signed in 1582, this auspicious date is recognised in the Pagan, Gaelic and Celtic traditions as one on which ladies may propose to their beloveds.

The right of every women to propose on 29th February each leap year, goes back many hundreds of years to when the leap year day had no recognition in English law (the day was 'leapt over' and ignored, hence the term 'leap year'). It was considered, therefore, that as the day had no legal status, it was reasonable to assume that traditions also had no status. Consequently, women who were concerned about being 'left on the shelf' took advantage of this anomaly and proposed to the man they wished to marry.

According to folklore (source: Lia Leendertz's Almanac for 2020) St Brigid, who's Saint Day is on Imbolc at the start of this month, is said to have negotiated this with St Patrick to balance the male and female traditional roles. If you are considering proposing to your loved one on 29th February, you might want to wear a red petticoat as this was seen as a lucky addition to the venture. The idea is to flash the red petticoat (or potentially other red under garment if you don't have such an item available) to make your proposal more likely to succeed. This may relate back to when red petticoats were traditionally worn by betrothed women to indicate their status, hence establishing the outcome as pre-ordained.  Believe it or not, at one time it was strongly frowned upon - and was even against the law - to refuse a lady's proposal on this day. Later the law was changed to reflect that if a man refused a woman's proposal on this date he must buy her a pair of gloves at Easter; perhaps this was to cover her embarrassment that she wasn't wearing a wedding ring.

Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the Sun. A leap year (or intercalary year) is a year containing one extra day (or, in the case of lunisolar calendars, a month) in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year. In the Gregorian calendar, February in a leap year has 29 days instead of the usual 28, so the year lasts 366 days instead of the usual 365. Otherwise, nearly six hours would be lost every calendar year; leading to a discrepancy of almost 24 days after only 100 years. Similarly, in the Hebrew calendar (a lunisolar calendar), a 13th lunar month is added seven times every 19 years to the twelve lunar months in its common years to keep its calendar year from drifting through the seasons too rapidly.

  • Saturday 29th May, Oak Apple Day in British tradition

29th May Oak Apple DaySaturday 29th May is the English Folk Festival of Oak Apple Day; held in honour of oak trees after Charles II escaped from Cromwell’s army by hiding in an oak tree. Oak leaves are worn until midday.

In May 1660, Oak Apple Day or Royal Oak Day was a declared as a formal public holiday, to be celebrated in England on 29th May to commemorate the restoration of the English Monarchy.

Although it was formally abolished in 1869, until national lockdown, the day was still celebrated in some parts of the country and is alternatively known as Shick Shack Day. Oak and Nettle Day, Yak Bob Day or Arbour tree Day.

  • Saturday 30th October, UK clocks go back tonight

31 October BST to GMTSaturday 30th October, clocks go back tonight in the UK.

We’re currently on British Summer Time (BST), which means tonight we we move he clocks back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

UK clocks go back on the final Sunday of October, with the change offically coming into effect at 2.00am.

It means that this year it’s happening in the early hours of Halloween (Samhain) Sunday 31st October, giving everyone an extra hour in the morning.

The purpose of changing of the clocks, is to give us an extra hour of daylight in the darkness of autumn and winter.

Interestingly, GMT is the standard time zone against all others in the world are referenced, and it will remain in place until the following spring, when it reverts back to BST again. This takes place at 1.00am on the final Sunday of March, which is 27th March this year in 2022.

Although there is no scientific evidence to support the practice of DST (Daylight Saving Time) in he summer, it does seem that aligning ourselves with extra sunshine helps to bring balance and wellbeing into our lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. We have programmes designed to help you keep aligned with our natural environment and the movements of our planet, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, bringing balance into their lives.

  • Sunday 14th February, Valentine's Day

valentine heartFriday 14th February - is Valentine's Day and is all about love and compassion, which includes Universal Love for all other living things and also Self-love which is so often overlooked.

Some bitterly refer to it as Singles Awareness Day and blame card manufacturers and our materialistic society for love being ritualistically forced upon us every year at this time. However, although it may have the fee of a mordern folk tradition, the first Valentine's Day was celebrated in AD 496 and it's celebtated in a number of other countries as well as the UK.

However, although the story of 'Saint' Valentine long precedes Hallmark et al, the origins are somewhat blurred as there are historical references to the existence of several different Valentines. Folklore indicates that Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage as he believed that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. Valentine, however, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages in secret. Claudius found out and Valentine was imprisoned, where one version of the legend indicates he befriended a jailer with a blind daughter and he may have somehow managed to restore her sight, resulting in the jailer converting to Christianity. Claudius ordered that Valentine be executed on February 14th and allegedly before his death sentence was carried out, he sent a note to the jailer's daughter and signed it, "From Your Valentine." Hence Valentine's Day is celebrated in his memory.

However, his death day and his association with lovers and notes may have been convenient for Roman Christians looking for ways to blend existing Pagan/Roman celebrations into their Calendar. Many believe it replaced Lupercalia (15th February); a pre-existing Roman Festival where men dressed up as wolves and roamed the streets looking for partners.  More on this tomorrow...

I would be delighted if you choose to share this blog with others who might enjoy it, you can use the social media share buttons at the top.

Aligning ourselves with other members of the community through mutual celebration is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Thursday 11th November, Armistice Day

11 Nov armistice dayThursday 11th November is Armistice Day to commemorate all those who died in World War 1 and 2. Poppies are traditionally used for this. The event is marked every year on the 11th November date itself but a bigger commemoration takes place on the nearest Sunday; this year Remembrance Day is Sunday 14th November.

I personally see this as an opportunity for a very cathartic release of all the sorrow, grief and disappointment for the thousands of families who were directly affected by WWI and the souls of all the millions who died, especially those whose bodies were never repatriated to their homelands. It's a pertinent day to undertake a meditation and send our love and gratitude to these people who selflessly gave up their lives.

11 Nov 11 11 portalWe also have the annual 11:11 Energy Portal. With many people worldwide recognising the 11th November as a powerful date, this, in itself, will create a heightened energy on the day. The effect of a high number of people all having positive expectations on the same date, due to the impact of quantum physics, will make it even more significant.

I will be offering a low key 11:11 event in Surrey (Guildford/Shere) with a few locals (contact me if you live locally and would like to join similar events) but if you want to positively mark the occasion, simply sit or lie down at 11 am (or pm) for 15 mins, thus spanning 11.11 on the clock, and imagine holding hands with other healers, lightworkers & positive thinkers  all over the world. Send love & gratitude to all those who gave their lives selflessly in mankind's many wars, and imagine a safe world for all of us to look forward to living in. ?

Poignantly, three years ago was 100 years since the end of World War One, making it an even grander occasion. I marked 11th November 2018 by visiting the 'Beyond the Deepening Shadow' flame installation in the Moat of the Tower of London.  This year it will be 103 years since the end of WWI and 76 years since the end of World War II, athough it happened earlier in 1945 than November.

Rob Heard, a talented Somerset based artist, created 72,396 shrouded calico figures, one to represent each member of the British and Commonwealth forces who died during the battle of the Somme (which raged for several months from 1st July 2016) and whose bodies have never been recovered or who has no known marked grave. Whilst their names are engraved on the CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) managed Thiepval Memorial, near the Somme battleground in northern France, some surviving relatives are seeing this as an opportunity to symbolically bring home the body of their loved one(s). See my YouTube video about the Shrouds and an interview with Rob himself.

It took Rob 4 years to create these figures and, for the centenary, they were displayed in an artistic installation at South Park Lawn, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (near Stratford, London) - see a video of Rob creating the figures and the installation being set up. More details here: Queen Elizabeth Park Shrouds of the Somme. After the exhibition closed, the shroud figures were made available to purchase, see Rob's Shrouds of the Sommewebsite for details.

Traditional festivals like this helped communities to feel connected, bringing balance and harmony into people's lives.

  • Thursday 13th January, ideal day for a Zadkiel Abundance Ritual

Jupiter is the planet ruling Thursdays and Zadkiel is the Angelic Guardian of Jupiter and Thursdays as well as abundance, success, wisdom and kindness. The period between the New Moon and Full Moon is when the Moon energy is supportive of abundance and manifestation, with the energy getting stronger as the Full moon approaches.

Whilst this abundance practice can be carried out on any Thursday, the Thursday immediately before the Full moon is the most energetically supportive. With the Full Moon happening on Monday (see below for details of our online Full Moon guided meditation), today is a great day for this Zadkiel ritual.

Details of our next Full Moon Guided meditation on Monday: -

Our Full Moon personal & global healing with unity consciousnes ritual is Monday 17th January at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT). Participants all receive a deeply healing experience. Cost to participate is £20 by online BACS payment (small admin fee added for PayPal) or half price to RSE graduates. There are multi-buy packages for regular attendees. Book at the Harmony Shop.

    RITUAL FOR ABUNDANCE WITH ZADKIEL

Zadkiel Abundance RitualFirst consider your life, and what sort of abundance you are seeking. Bear in mind that you could wish for abundance of health, happiness, money, love, spiritual development - the list is infinite. Here is an example affirmation:

"I am grounded and safe and with the help of the angels I open my heart both to receive and to radiate Love and Light to the Universe. Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Spirit nourish and heal me, and in return I share this with Mother Earth and all sentient life. As Microcosm I strive to grow in spiritual consciousness and as Macrocosm I am part of All, for the spark of the Divine is within me. The Waters of Time flow through me and will bring me the abundance I need, sometimes in surprising ways. In accordance with the Universal Laws I shall return good for good as an expression of my eternal gratitude to the Creator. As Above So Below, As Below So Above."

    • Carry out the ritual during a waxing moon, near full moon if possible.
    • Make an altar cloth. This can be in any colour (or shape), such as white (for angels and purity), gold for healing and the sun, blue or turquoise for Zadkiel himself. Choose the colour and shape which appeals to you personally. Place suitable crystals in the centre; you could represent earth/air (smoky quartz/amethyst, water (aquamarine/malachite) and fire (amber) with crystals or just use clear quartz (an all purpose crystal)
    • Use a feather to represent the link with the angels, and spiritual Truth.
    • Now select a deep blue or turquoise candle (or white) for Zadkiel; etch into it the sign for the planet Jupiter (bringer of abundance, wisdom and joy) or doubled to represent Zadkiel (see below).
    • (optional) Anoint the candle with a drop of frankincense or myrhh to aid your quest.
    • Make an arc of your arm as you light the candle and call on the Angel Zadkiel to assist you to send your Affirmation in the name of the planet Jupiter, in Love and Light, Love and Light, Love and Light.
    • If you have one and wish to programme it, hold in your left hand a lapis lazuli or turquoise crystal (for Zadkiel) to bring wisdom to recognise opportunity when it presents itself.
    • Next read your personal Affirmation three times.
    • Ask the angels of the elements: Phuel, Lord of the Waters, Uriel, ruler of Fire, and Ariel, of earth and air to carry your Affirmation to the Universe
    • Ask Ruhiel, Guardian Angel of the Winds, to carry and speed your Affirmation on its way.
    • Let it go. Send it and then forget about it! Do not interfere with it!
    • If you can, leave your candle to burn out. If not pinch or snuff out, as you lose forty per cent of its energy by blowing it out.
    • Thank Zadkiel, and all the other angels you invoked, for their support and assistance.

It should be noted that this Affirmation should work within a few weeks of its release, and things should start to change for the better from this point onwards. Remember to also give thanks to the angels and the Creator for any abundance that you subsequently receive, and to spread it around you to others who need it.

I was surprised that this would be an acceptable dish once Lent had commenced (as 'fritter' suggests batter which would contains egg and milk) and on further research I discovered that inLancashire (source: lep.co.uk) traditionally ‘Shrovetide’ meant the three days before Lent and comprised of ‘Collop Monday’, ‘Pancake Tuesday’ and ‘Fritters Wednesday’ (rather than Thursday) with the fritters being sliced apples fried in batter.

Confused by this, I contacted Lia Leendertz and asked about her sources for the 2020 Almanac. I'm delighted to say that she kindly responded to confirm that Fritter Thursday is featured in Cattern Cakes and Lace by Julia Jones, apparently as a Yorkshire tradition, and that it is also mentioned in the Oxford Companion to Food by Alan Davidson. Like me, she was at a loss to explain how it was allowed as this wasn't explained anywhere. However, she noted that fried pieces of floured applewould be good even without full batter or sugar. Lia also uncovered a 15th century recipe for Lent Fritters in Jane Grigson’s English Food and it was found to contain milk, eggs and sugar! A mystery. Maybe it’s Jane's (non Lenten) version of it.  Thank you Lia for your thoughtful contribution...

The latter two websites are not hyperlinked as they flag up as insecure.

By partaking in Fritter Thursday, confessing sins and living a modest life throughout the period of Lent, Christian's believed that it would enhance their harmony and wellbeing.

  • Thursday 6th January, 12th Night or Epiphany in Christian tradition

6th January 12th Night or EpiphanyThursday 6th Januaryis Epiphany; the name for Twelfth Night in the Christian Calendar. The day when traditionally the Christmas Tree and other decorations should be removed until the following year.

Epiphany is defined as 'a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ'.

In the UK, Epiphany has become associated with an “Aha!” moment. As a literary device, epiphany (pronounced ih-pif--uh-nee) describes the moment when a character has a life-changing realisation which alters the direction of that character's belief structure and hence marks a turning point in the plot which influences the rest of the story. These are moments of great philosophical, spiritual, or personal insight.

The term Twelfth Night has been immortalised by the Shakespeare's play by that name.

In Western Christianity, the Epiphany feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child, whereas in Eastern Christianity, Epiphany commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.

The traditional date for the feast is 6th January, although some recognise it as the night of 5th January, and since 1970, the celebration is held in some countries on the Sunday following 1st January.

Popular Epiphany customs included attending church services, chalking the door, having one's house blessed, winter swimming, Epiphany singing. It was traditional to consume Three Kings Cake  or Twelfth Night cake, which would have a pea and a bean hidden within it; perhaps this was a prelude to our tradition of hiding a small coin in the Christmas Pudding. The lady who found the pea would be Lady or Queen of Misrule whereas the man who discovered the bean would be proclaimed Lord or King of Misrule, and roles would be reversed between masters and commoners, possibly explaining Shakespeare’s choice of title for his play although no direct reference is made to this feast within the script itself.

Aligning ourselves with community celebrations is very therapeutic and is excellent for promoting harmony and bringing wellbeing into our lives.

  • Tuesday 30th November, St Andrews Day in Scotland

30 Nov St Andrews dayTuesday 30th November is St Andrew’s Day in Scotland.

Saint Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland, and St. Andrew's Day is celebrated by Scots around the world on the 30th November. According to a 2015 article in the Independent, Saint Andrew is also the patron saint of fishmongers, fishermen, singers, spinsters, maidens, women wanting to be mothers, as well as the Order of the Thistle, one of the highest ranks of chivalry in the world, second only to the Order of the Garter. Apparently he's also the 'Go-to' Saint for anyone with gout or a sore throat.

St Andrew never visited Scotland, but has been revered there since about 1000 AD. It was the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 which identified him as their patron saint. St Andrew was crucified in Greece in 60 AD, by order of Roman Governor Aegeas, on an X-shaped cross, hence the flag of Scotland depicts the blue (saltire) Cross, and this is widely displayed as a symbol of national identity.

Celebrating traditional fesivals like St Andrew's Day, help to unite communities together and bring balance and harmony into people's lives.
