  • Monday 1st & Tuesday 2nd February, Celtic & Pagan Festival of Imbolc

    shutterstock 114601966 Pagan wheel

Monday 1st & Tuesday 2nd February is the Pagan Imbolc Ceremony, which is one of the four Great Celtic Festivals (between the Solstices and the Equinoxes), and which is a Wiccan, Gaelic and Druid Festival of Fertility anfd Growing Light. Imbolc (pronouned EE-molk) is an old Celtic Word and the celebration can also be known as Candlemas. The Pagan Wheel image was purchased from Shutterstock.

Imbolc is sacred to the Goddess Brigid, Brigit or Bridie, the power of the new moon, the Spring of the year, the flowing sea, corn dollies and the Great Moon Mother - Patroness of Poetry Making and Healing. Brigid is a triple Goddess, so she can be honoured in all her aspects, she is associated with fire, fertility, midwifery and the young.

Imbolc Image by Antonia SkeltonThe Imbolc Festival marks the passing of Winter and the first signs of Spring, with the emergence of new leaves and early flowers such as the snowdrop and crocus, as well as being the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of the Crone to the Maiden.

Imbolc is a Fire Festival and it is traditional, at sunset, to briefly light every light in the house. Or light candles in each toom to celebrate the return of the sun. If it's been snowing, take time to enjoy walking in the snow, draw an image of the sun into the snow and reflect on the sun's warmth.

Traditional foods for Imbolc include anything dairy, including sour cream, as the Festival celebrated the calving season. Spicy and rich foods, such as curry or anything made with peppers, leeks, onion, chives and/or garlic are appropriate to celebrate the sun, together with mulled wine and anything containing raisins which also represent the sun.

So fire and purification were an important part of the Imbolc festival with candles being lit to signify the increasing power of the Sun and the return of warmth over the forthcoming months and Holy wells were visited at Imbolc, and at the other Celtic festivals of Beltane and Lughnasa. All this focus on nurturing warmth and purification plus water to release emotions brings harmony and wellbeing into your life.

t's also a good time to clear clutter and look at what you want to achieve this year and ask Brigid's help in making it happen.

Here's a little water blessing you can do with Brigid, given to me by the wonderful esoteric author Christopher Street in 2012. I highly recommend his book London Leylines; Pathways of Enlightenment

Ideally in a glass container (I use a clean jam jar), collect some water from your local river or pond, if safe to do so, or else rain water or even tap water. Hold it in your hands and radiate love from your heart, via your hands, into the water and say the following Imbolc poem to Brigid: -

A budding blossom, fair I grow

The light of youth is on my brow

    Purity of crystal spring,

and gift of morning flower I bring

From death and darkness, frost and cold

a tale of birth and life unfolds

Healing gifts spring from her bag

She who was the Winter Hag

Fruit of the Earth, from Goddess fair

No man-made gift could be compared

to that which flows from nature’s love

and the blessings of the dove

Then, if you feel inspired, you can utter this apology on behalf of mankind, similar to one that was used at an international water healing ceremony I attended on 3rd August 2008:

    Water, We Are Sorry.

    Water, We Love You.

    Water, We Thank You.

    Water, We Respect You.

Send the intention that the water in the glass is completely filled with the vibrations of Apology, Love, Gratitude and Respect. As you hold both of your hands against the glass, and visualise that the vibrations of your sincere apology emitting from your heart will be projected into the water and imagine that each water molecule in the glass is healed and sparkling with life like millions of little suns.

Then, when you feel it's appropriate, put the water back where it came from.  If it was rain or tap water you can pour it into the earth so that the blessed water filters down into the water table beneath the surface or you can return your blessed water to a local waterway or pond/lake.

Celebration of local customs, such as those at Imbolc, with other members of the Pagan Community was found to be therapeutic; bringing harmony and wellbeing into their lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities during lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle on Friday 26th February is at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT), and costs £10 (+ £1 Paypal fee). During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

If you would like to experience one of our spiritual offerings (meditation, reading, 1:1 healing, a Forest Bathing+ session or a full mentoring course), why not ask for a Harmony Healing gift voucherfor a birthday or other celebratory occasion?

A number of virtual courses are now ready, details on Harmony Healing Virtual Events. Currently, due to Coronavirus, most events will be virtual hence distant readings and healings are proving popular. We don't recommend giving a reading or healing to another person, without first checking whether it would be welcomed.

Joanna offers distant intuitive readings (past life and/or aura readings) and distant 1-2-1 healings and virtual healing circles. We also have meditations available.

  • Monday 1st March, St David's Day & Roman Festival of Matronalia

Saint Davids DayMonday 1st March is St David’s Day. St. David, Dewi Sant, is the patron saint of Wales, and 1st March, his feast day, is celebrated as a patriotic and cultural festival.

The exact year when St David was born isn't known, but it is believed to be between 462 and 515 AD.

Saint David, Grandson of the King of Ceredigion, was said to have been born on a clifftop during a fierce storm. He died on this day during the year 500. He grew up to be a celebrated Bishop and founder of monastic settlements and churches. Glastonbury Abbey may have been founded by St David.

So why is David associated with a dragon? There is a myth that when David was asked by villagers to slay a dragon, he instead went to visit the dragon and listen to its sad tale.

According to the BBC Website, Welsh people around the world mark the day by wearing one or both of Wales's national emblems; a daffodil and/or a leek.

Until lockdown, a St David's Day parade was held in central Cardiff every year, with exciting performances by dragons and theatre groups. Children can wear traditional Welsh clothing and take part in folk dances. St David's Hall in Cardiff also hosts a concert featuring the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales performing traditional songs.

These wives of the house also gave a feast for their female slaves.

Matronalia 1st MarchMonday 1st March in Ancient Roman tradition, is also Matronalia, which was the topsy-turvy feast sacred to Juno Lucina, who was the Goddess of childbirth, motherhood and

It was also a celebration of marriage, and the peace that these unions could usher in between Romans and Sabini, tribes from the mountain region near the Tibor.

Matronalia was thought to have been established by Romulus and it was the first day of the year.

Whenever a child was born in Rome, it was ordained by royal decree of Rex Servius Tullius that the parents must make an offering Juno Lucina'stemple.

I would be delighted if you choose to share this blog with others who might enjoy it, you can use the social media share buttons at the top.

Aligning ourselves with other members of the community through mutual celebration is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. We have a new series of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1Egyptian Alchemy healing modules starting this month with Mindful Chakra Balancing & Unity Consciousness on Tuesday evenings starting 11th March and Essene Angelology on Thursday evenings commencing 16th March. These modules are £66 each.

  • Monday 21st December @ 13.30, Winter Solstice in Northern Hemisphere (Summer Solstice in southern hemisphere)

Monday 21st December is the Pagan Solstice @ 13.30. It's the Winter Solstice here in the UK - the shortest day of the year with just 7 hours and 49 minutes daylight. The solstice itself is the moment the sun is shining farthest to the south, directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, so the time varies every year, between December 20th and 23rd.

The solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years as a major Pagan festival with rituals of rebirth. Revellers will gather at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise on the shortest day. Then, here in the Northern Hemisphere, our days will gradually get longer until the summer solstice on Monday 21st June 2021.

Many believe that the traditions now associated with Christmas had their roots in Pagan Winter Solstice celebrations; including misteltoe, Yule logs and even Christmas trees. The Druids - an ancient Celtic order of priests, diviners, teachers and magicians who gleaned knowledge and enlightenment from ancient trees such as ‘Tutorial Oaks’ and sacred landscapes - used evergreen trees, mistletoe and holly (could the word 'holy' be derived from this) to represent everlasting life.  Druids consider the cutting of trees an offence against nature, but would happily decorate them with colourful rags tied onto the branches.

22 22 Silver Platinum Star Gate of Moons from Angela McGerrs Love Light Cards

The image on the right shows 22:22 Silver Platinum Star Gate of Moons drawn by Richard Rockwood from Angela McGerr's Love & Light Cards. The cards were a small print run and have been long out of print but we do have a few pre-loved editions via the Harmony Shop.

Below is some information relating to a very powerful planetary alignment happening on the Solstice written by my friend Cathy Ballard (https://www.cathyballard.com/)

    "THE GRAND SATURN-JUPITER CONJUNCTION

Apart from the heightened stress, disappointment and upset in the collective conscious from enforced separation on top of the normal Christmas pressures, there is also another reason that things are especially emotionally intense for many right now, and that is the Saturn-Jupiter Grand Conjunction happening on Monday 21st December – the Solstice.

It is a very big deal for the evolution of consciousness.

Aboriginal and native peoples of the earth have been preparing for this event for a long time. You can find much more detailed information about the astrological meanings online, but essentially a major energy shift is taking place, especially in the build up to Solstice, that will create higher frequencies that hugely influence humanity for the good moving forwards.

This interesting video explains how there is an alignment of planets and moons that hasn't happened for 6000 years, labelled 'the Galactic Alignment'.

Supposedly it's a reset, and leading up to it we are encouraged to let go of old baggage and stuff we no longer need as we move into this higher frequency. And what that looks like on a practical level is all kinds of emotional junk coming to the surface to be released.

So lots of us will be going through the wringer right now!

ABORIGINAL PROPHESY – 'TURNING ON THE MAGIC BOX'

Known as 'turning on the magic box', there will be a ceremony taking place at Uluru
in central Australia that is prophesized will recharge and revitalise the spiritual heart of the planet, setting into motion a gradual ascension in the earthly vibration of the planet.

Turning on this magic box is dependant on there being enough people on the planet on that day, at that time, who are in a positive vibration, such as love, compassion, joy, peace. It will feed off pure positive human energy, and the box will absorb that powerful reservoir of pure energy then amplify and distribute it throughout all the sacred sites, ley lines and Dreaming tracks on the planet.

Of course there are many people who will doubt the truth of a prophesy, but why not pin our hopes on this happening? The reality of millions of people all consciously creating pure positive thoughts, vibrating love and holding the energy of Divine Consciousness in their hearts for the planet can't be a bad thing? And we've seen so many cases of instant healing occurring through group focus that this could make a big impact on all our lives at such a grand scale.

    YOU CAN HELP –
by meditating at that time, and in the time leading up to it. Clear your field, cleanse your soul, flood the planet with peaceful vibrations and recalibrate to the highest vibration possible.

Your energy can help turn this magic box on.

Many people are needed. The ceremony takes place at09.02 local time in Uluru (the famous landmark rock sacred to the Aboriginals we know as Ayers Rock). This is 11.32am UK time, 03.32am PST, 06.32am EST)."

Thank you Cathy for the above, you can sign up to her newsletters, and have access to her beautiful meditations, at https://www.cathyballard.com/.

IMG 4698Last year, I was up at 5am this morning for a wonderful Winter Solstice Sunrise gong ceremony (see photo left) at the lovely Clandon Wood Nature Reserve, where it was raining on arrival at 6.15 but settled down during the session and was sunny as I drove home  This year, I was due to be atending a Winter Solstice sound bath in Weybridge the day before on the 20th, but with our area moving into Tier 3 for 24 hours then Tier 4 COVID alert has meant his was cancelled.  On Monday itself, I will be having an informal zoom gathering with the RSE students who want to join me.  The Uluru event will take place in the middle of our virtual gathering as it happens...

Celebrating traditional Celtic festivals like the Winter Solstice, helped Pagan communities come together and bring balance and harmony into people's lives.

  • Monday 21st June, Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere

21st June Summer Solstice21st June solstice 1Monday 21st June at 04.32  is the Pagan Celebration of the Solstice, the moment when the sun enters the constellation of Cancer. In the Northern Hemisphere, it's the Summer Solstice viewed as the triumph of light, the ecstatic culmination of the sun, yet the start of growing darkness.

Old traditions included: Making a bonfire on a hilltop, sing, drink, laugh and time of merry-making. Processions with torches and lanterns, rolling wheel down hill to mark the start of the sun’s descent, blessing cakes and wine, waiting for the dawn and greeting the sun when it rises, sleeping by a spring, rolling naked in the dew of the summer sunrise!

Although there have been thousands at Stonehenge to welcome in this turning point in the year, I expect it will be ghostly silent there again in 2021. The year I went, when there were about 19,000 others, you could just drive there and enter free other than parking charges (around £15 for a car, £5 for a motorobike). It is an unforgetable experience.

In 2017-19 many have gathered at the Clandon Wood Nature Reserve (upper right) near Guildford Surrey, to watch the sunrise.

21st June solstice 321st June solstice 2With my friends Olga and Gary hosting a solstice celebration between 04.00 & 07.00. Here are some pictures from 2017 & 2018 when we enjoyed an amazing sunrise with a mystical cloud formation over the horizon.

After sunrise (officially 04.46 although it was getting light at around 4am), we enjoyed a guided meditation followed by a gong bath courtesy of Gary Evans and Olga Terebenina, Holistic Healing Therapy

You might be wondering, did we all roll around naked in the dew afterwards?  If so, there are no photos...

A similar event was planned at Clandon Wood for this year - when the UK lockdown restrictions were due to be lifted on the day but have been delayed a month - so are now cancelled.

This year, I am attending a whole day to celebrate the Summer Solstice at Harrry Edwards Healing Sanctuary in Shere, where I regularly offer Forest Bathing+ sessions in the grounds. There will be a smaller gong bath gathering, starting at 10,30, followed by a walk in their labyrinth and other festivities. I only heard at the last minute and was lucky to get a space just before they closed bookings.

By keeping aligned with the movements of our planet, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

  • Monday 23rd September, Equinox

earth lighting equinox enMonday 23rd September at 08.50 is the Pagan Celebration of the Autumn Equinox, marking the time of harvest festival and fulfilment of summer; since, in the Northern Hemisphere, from now on there will be more dark than light for the rest of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere it's the Spring Equinox, heralding the longer days leading to the Summer Solstice.

An equinox is an astronomical event when the plane of Earth's equator passes the center of the Sun. Equinoxes occur twice a year, around 21st March and 22nd/23rd September.

The image on the right, by Przemyslaw Blueshade Idzkiewicz (from Wikipedia), shows the illumination of Earth by Sun on the day of equinox (vernal and autumnal). It is a view to eastern-hemisphere  showing  noon  in  Central European time zone (ignoring DST) on the day of equinox.

At this point in the year, the night and day lengths are exactly equal, so it's a time of balance and a good time for introspection, look for what is good and worthwhile to become seeds for next year.

Here in the UK, followers of the Druids, Pagans, Celtic and Gaelic traditions, as well as Wicca religion, gather at megalithic stone circles such as Stonehenge (Near Salisbury, Wiltshire) and Castlerigg (Keswick, Cumbria), to celebrate and watch the equinox sunrise.

  • Monday 26th April is our Full Moon Healing Circle - a Virtual Chakra Balancing, Global Healing & Unity Consciousness Guided Meditation

    April Healing Circle

The next healing circle group gathering is tomorrow night, Monday 26th April, and all participants will receive group healing, be able to nominate others for healing, plus there will be a global healing exercise. See below for more.

This is the Beltane Pink Full Moon - which peaks at 04.31 on Tuesday (so Full Moon is Monday night/Tuesday morning). It's Full Moon and also the first of three consecutive Supermoons. A Supermoon or Super Full Moon are names used when a Full Moon takes place at a time when the Moon is near its closest approach to Earth. See timeanddate.

Event: Healing Circle Monday 26th April, 7.30-9.30pm UK time

Please join me so that collectively we can make a difference. It really feels like more than ever the world could do with being sent some positive energy...

If you can't join us but want healing sent to you or others, see below for 'Absentee Guest List' info

The Zoom link will be sent to all those booked in prior to the event, see below for more about Zoom.

    Event Format

Following brief introductions (assuming numbers are small enough to allow this).

With this event taking place on the evening before Beltane Pink Full Supermoon, we will start by invoking Gabriel, Essene Guardian of the moon and Guardian Angel of Mondays and overseer of hopes, dreams and aspirations, as well as Ophaniel, Guardian of the Moon Cycle and Adiel, Guardian of the Full Moon Phase and the week following. We sometimes call in the other angels, as guided.
Then we will 'invite in' (remotely) the Higher Self or soul essence of any 'absentee guests' brought to the circle for healing by those present (see note marked * below).

Next, I will guide participants through a balancing colour, crystal (and/or angels) healing exercise by means of mindful connection with the 9 personal chakras.

When the balancing exercise is completed (30-45 mins), we will all connect into a virtual circle and then activate the additional two chakras connecting us above (sky) and below (mother earth) with additional guiding angels in each case.

Once we are 'plugged in' above & below, we will send healing around the circle which will include our absent guests and time will be spent focussing on global healing to humanity, other living beings, the planet herself and the universe.

When we return from this experience, we draw the event to a close. I anticipate around 2 hours, though it could be less. Folks can leave earlier, but they may have to bring themselves back from a meditative space. To do this, visualise roots connecting you to the ground below, focussing on the day, date and venue space where you are meditating. Make sure you feel safely back and drink some water before re-assuming general life chores.

    *Absentee Guest List
Ideally, before the event, draw up a list of people to whom you would like to send healing; make sure they are people who would welcome distance healing as its not considered 'spiritually ethical' to force healing onto unwilling recipients! Unless you know that it would be against their beliefs, it is considered ethical to send healing to those with whom you are directly connected (spouse, partner, parents, children, siblings) and/or anyone who is not conscious or readily contactable and therefore cannot be consulted. We then add the proviso that the healing be sent to them IF it is in their 'Highest Good'. These make up the 'guests' brought to the circle by participants.

    More about Zoom
Virtual Events will be live on Zoom.  All you need to take part is a computer with a webcam and microphone. A camera is not essential but without it, the experience is less interactive and would not be recommended for a longer workshop.

We have chosen Zoom as our online healing space and classroom as it's very easy to download and use. If you do not have Zoom, visit https://zoom.us/ and sign up for free.

On paying for any virtual event, you will receive an email giving the Zoom link to access your class. Remember to check your spam folder if you don’t receive this confirmation email in your main inbox.

Payment - Let me know you've paid via , so that I send you the Zoom link in time.

  • Samhain Full Ivy Moon, Wednesday 24th October 2018

Wednesday 24th October is the Samhain Full Ivy Moon @ 17.47.

If you are an angel fan, the angel of the Moon is Gabriel.

To the left is a beautiful image of Gabriel by Richard Rockwood from my sister Angel McGerr's A Harmony of Angels book (and Harmony Angel Cards).

Both are out of print and collectible but we still have a few remaining copies via the Harmony Shop.

See link for instructions on Angela's Angelic Meditation with Gabriel.

At the time of the Full Moon the Sun and Moon are in opposition. The solar (sun) energy influences our masculine/yang archetypal attributes (our outer world) such as strength, courage, identity, self-esteem, expression, conscious beliefs and determination together with our logical outlook.  Whereas the lunar energy (moon) influences our femininely archetypal attributes (our inner world), such as our unconscious beliefs, hidden emotions, nurturing feelings, creativity and intuition. The Full Moon is a powerful and appropriate time to show gratitude for life and the riches and bounty bestowed upon us by Mother Earth (Gaia).

The Celts had names for each Full Moon of the year, and associated each with a tree; this is the Ivy Moon(thoughtco.com). Samhain (Halloween, 31st October) is approaching and the year is coming to a close. The Ivy Moon marks the end of the harvest season, when most of the plants have withered but the evergreen Ivy carries on (even when its host has died), reminding us of the ongoing circle of life - life, death and rebirth. The Celts called the month Gort (pronounced go-ert) and it is seen as a time to banish fear and negativity from your life. Protect yourself from people, products and activities that are toxic to you. Ivy can be used in magical ceremonies for protection, healing, co-operation and for binding lovers together.

Other names for a Full Moon in October are: Harvest Moon, Hunter's Moon (Northern Hemisphere) or Egg Moon, Fish Moon, Seed Moon, Pink Moon, Waking Moon, (Southern Hemisphere). Names for the moon can also relate to the season, so this Full Moon could also be called the Harvest Moon, or Hunter’s Moon, Frosty Moon, Beaver Moon (after the autumnal equinox)or Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Planting Moon, or Milk Moon, Rose Moon, Flower Moon, or Strawberry Moon (after the spring equinox). Source = earthsky.org.

The time between any Full Moon and the next New Moon is a good time, energetically, to detox the body. As avoiding toxins is recommended for the Ivy Moon, detoxing might also be advisable. I recommend anoil pulling technique, with coconut oil, which must be from a glass container for best taste.

See my Facebook Live on Saturday 31st March is the Equinox Easter Alder Blue Full Moon (featuring the energies of the March 2018 Equinox Full Moon event plus instructions on Oil Pulling and Angela McGerr's Angelic Meditation with Gabriel). Plus, if you're interested, 'Has Easter been superimposed onto an earlier Pagan celebration Eostre?'

  • Samhain or Halloween, Wednesday 31st October 2018

Shutterstock Pagan Wheel InageWednesday 31st October  traditionally marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the Celtic and Pagan New Year. Samhain is Irish-Gaelic for 'the Summer's end', and is pronounced 'sow-in'.

Samhain represents the death of the summer sun god, Lugh. This festival celebrates Nature's cycle of death and renewal.  This is traditionally known as Halloween and is considered a time when the veil is thin between ours and other dimensions hence we can sense the presence of our ancestors more easily.

Samhain is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals; along with Lughnasadh, Imbolc and Beltane.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Samhain heralds the beginning of Winter when the world starts to darken and the days are getting shorter; the 'dark half' of the year and the demise of the sun's uplifting influence.

The crone, personified as Cailleach - the Queen of the Winter - was reborn on every All Hallows Eve, returning to bring the Winter and protect animals through the coldest months. She turned to stone on Beltane Eve, Beltane being 1st May.

    According to Edwin Courtenay

On Halloween (Samhain), the veil between the worlds is thin because the old Celtic year is ending and the new Celtic year about to begin. This day and night - not one thing or the other - is a luminal space used by the Spirits of the Dead to visit those they love who they have left behind.

In the Witches circle a door is opened in the East and the dead invited to walk through and commune with the living. In ancient days, plates were laid at the table and filled with food for the dead (a tradition still followed by some) the plate placed outside at the end of the night for the phantoms to feast on. On this day candles are lit and the loved ones gone before are remembered, grieved and loved. On this night the Horned Lord of the Witches rides with his ghostly troupe rescuing the lost and Earth bound Souls seeking peace.

The ghosts of Halloween are not Gouls and monsters but our relatives and friends, come not to terrify but to love. Welcome them then and share this night together and know that there is nothing to fear from the dead.

Edwin also explains what is meant by the 'veil is thin':

Midnight has always been known as the Witching Hour... but why?

Midnight is a luminal space - not quite one day or the other but rather a space between, a betwixt between and therefore a space close to the Spirit world and the Gods! There are other luminal moments of course - dawn and dusk and also luminal spaces such as thresholds, archways, wells and lakes. Places that are natural gateways, that harbour unseen things (like the evil eye - which is why we lift brides over thresholds - so the evil eye doesn’t see them) and other powers!

These moments are powerful then and the times when witches weave their spells - especially on Halloween night!!!

Samhain (Halloween) seemed like an appropriate date for a mini Past Lives Workshop. If you are interested in reincarnation and/or past life readings and live near London, you might enjoy the London Angels, Nature & Keys to Wellbeing Meetup on Wednesday 31st October, at WeWork Waterhouse Square, London, EC1N 2SW 6.00-8.00pm, £25 (plus £1.50 admin fee if paid by PayPal). The theme is Do Past Lives Exist and will include a mini reading for those present.

  • Samonios, All Saints Day, 1st November 2017

Pagan image of SamoniosWednesday 1st November starts the first month of the Celtic Year, called Samonios - 'Seed Fall'; mirroring the death/rebirth cycle of Asar (Osiris).

It is thought that two Roman festivals became incorporated with Samhain - 'Feralia', when the Romans commemorated the passing of the dead, and 'Pomona', when the Roman goddess of fruit and trees was honoured. The Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples is thought to derive from the ancient links with the Roman fruit goddess, Pomona, and a Druidical rite associated with water.

This is also All Saints Day in the Christian calendar.

The Samonios image above and text below, by Helen Benigni, are kindly taken with permission from the angelfire.com website.

The month of SAMONIOS is a month of miraculous births beginning with the appearance of the twin stars of Castor and Pollux on the Eastern Horizon. These miraculously born twins, from an egg containing both mortal and immortal potential, bridge the gap between this world and the Otherworld with their appearance on the first quarter moon heralding the Holy Nights of Winter Solstice. Further into the month shortly after the third quarter of the moon, a trio of stars including Rigel, Betelguese, and Castor march across the sky to illiminate this Oenach of light and birth.

Literally translated as "seed fall," SAMONIOS is the month when the light of the Dagda, the seed of his loins, penetrates the womb of the earth and creates life. This light is symbolized by the sunrise of the Winter Solstice penetrating the inner chambers of the sacred mounds of the Neolithic peoples. At Newgrange, the sacred mound of the Bru na Boinne, the light of the Winter Solstice shines through a roof-box of white quartz for seventeen minutes to dramatically illuminate the cruciform chamber of the passage tomb. Here, the stone-carved geometric motifs common to trance states of shamanic ecstasy amplify the light in order that the observer may experience the light of life bestowed by the solar deity.

This solar alignment initiates the light half of the year. Mistletoe is hung as a symbol of the immortal love that the good father, Dagda brought to Boand, the goddess of the Bru na Boinne. Oengus, the son of their union and the Lord of the Sid mound, guards the entrance to the Otherworld and immortal life.

  • Saturday 13th March, New Moon @ 10.21, time for manifestation & abundance rituals

New Moon image pngSaturday 13th March @ 10.21 is Pagan Dark Moon (New Moon). The reference to Dark Moon literally reflects the fact that the Moon is not lighting up the sky. Some Pagans believed it was an auspicious time for celebrations and rituals (while others would always choose Full Moon).

The energy of this time is great for new projects and manifestation! Follow the link in my bio for abundance rituals and more on my site.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy. There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

It is a fabulous day for creating a personal or corporate Vision Board for 2021. Creating a Vision Board which illustrates pictorially how you envisage your goals taking shape, really helps to make the possibilities seem real and attainable and gives a source of reference later when you want to look back and compare what you set out to achieve to what has materialised in the interim. Focussing on what you want to manifest in your life is a really effective way of bringing harmony and balance into your life.

The next New Moon in April marks the start of my New Moon New Vision course which will run 12th April to 11th May, taking in the Pagan Celebration of Beltane and the 555 numerology of 1st May. Join us for moon meditations, daily affirmations, vision board creation, manifestation and energy attunements!

The April/May lunar alignment programme follows a similar format to our New Year New Vision Lunar alignment course which we completed on the 12th February. Here's a typical response:

As we're almost at the end of the course, but still the beginning of a journey, I thought I'd share a few of the things that have changed for me during this moon cycle.

I have more space within... I can literally feel it - possibly as a result of the Soul Star and Earth Star Chakras attunement, and also because of the releasing that has been happening over the last 2 weeks.
I have recovered a routine which brings about a more productive day.
My brain has tuned into the fact that I need to lose weight... I've let go of snacking, I'm having beautiful detox baths and have done the oil pulling. I am doing daily dance exercises.
I am meditating more and got back on track with daily self-Reiki.
    I'm seeing the bigger picture.
    I am generally more focused.

Such positive stuff for everyday living! 💜

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the New moon (good for starting new projects) and Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life.

We have two new interactive mentoring courses series starting this month.  The Mindful Chakra Balancing & Unity Consciousness on Thursday evenings, starting 11th March (late starters accommodated) and Essene Angelology on Tuesday evenings which is detailed above. These modules are £66 each.

If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities during lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle later this month  on Sunday 28th March, at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee).

  • Saturday 1st May, Celtic Pagan Beltane plus Roman Bona Dea

May Day BeltaneSaturday 1st May is May Day and Beltane - a Celtic word meaning 'fires of Bel' (Bel was a Celtic and Gaelic Deity). It is a fire festival that celebrates the coming of summer and the fertility of the coming year. Celtic Priests, as well as other high ranking officials in Celtic society, were called Druids. Celtic festivals often tied in with the needs of the community.

In springtime, at the beginning of the farming calendar, everybody would be hoping for a fruitful year for their fields and hence also their families. Beltane rituals would often include courting: for example, young men and women collecting blossoms in the woods and lighting fires in the evening.

These rituals would often lead to matches and marriages, either immediately or in the coming summer or autumn.

Beltane is one of the four Celtic seasonal festivals; along with Lughnasadh, Samhain and Imbolc.  See yesterday's Blog for more on the meaning and festivities of Beltane.

Bona Dea 1st MaySaturday 1st May was also the annual Roman Festival of Bona Dea. In Roman mythology, Bona Dea (literally "the good goddess") was the goddess of fertility, healing, virginity, and women.

She was the daughter (or wife/sister depending on sources) of the nature-god Faunus and was associated with supplying medicinal healing herbs in her temple garden.

Bona Dea was also invoked for freedom from slavery; many of her worshippers were freed slaves and plebeians, and many were women seeking aid in sickness or for fertility.

This Festival was celebrated by women only, with men being barred from any knowledge of her mysteries!

This would have comprised part of the six day Roman Festival of Floralia, commencing on 28th April (Julian Calender equivalent), detailed on my earlier Blog.

By keeping traditions, Celtic and Roman communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Joanna's Harmony Healing activities - not involving any rolling in the dew celebrations - are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life!

The next RSE 1 module series starts 14th May with Violet Flame of Amenti and 17th May with Chakra Balancing, Axiatonal Alignment and Unity Consciousness.

If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities following lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle later this month on Wednesday 26th May at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT+1), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee). • Saturday 31st October, Reed Full Moon @ 14.51

Saturday 31st October is the Full Moon @ 14.51. It's the Halloween Reed Blue Moon. The term blue moon, doesn't relate to the colour at all, but purely the fact that it's the 2nd Full Moon in the same calendar month, the previous one was 1st October. The original definition of a Blue Moon related to when there were two Full Moons in the same season. Because they are relatively unusual, it has led to the expression 'once in a blue moon' for something that is a rare occurrence.  We have our next Virtual Healing Circle tonight, 7.30-9.30 (GMT/UT), details below.

Between this date and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

Samhain (Halloween, 31st October) is here and the year is coming to a close. Reeds were used by the Celts to make wind instruments and at this time of year, as the wind blows through the dying reeds (they die back in winter), and the resulting eerie haunting sound was thought to be the souls of the departed on their final journey to the underworld. The Celts called this month Negatal (pronounced nyettle) and it's a time for magical relating to spirit guides, meditation, energy work and honouring the cycle of life - birth, death and re-birth.  It's also a good time for scrying and divination. The neo pagans sometimes refer to this month by it's alternative name of Elm Moon.

  • Solstice Full Moon, Saturday 22nd December 2018

Saturday 22nd December is the Solstice Elder Full Moon @ 17.50.

The Celts had names for each Full Moon of the year, and associated each with a tree; this is the Elder Moon(thoughtco.com). The Elder Moon marks a time of passing. The Elder bush damages easily but bursts back into life recovering promptly and so it is represents the coming New Year. The Celts called this month Ruish (pronounced roo-esh) and it's a time for renewal, rejuvenation and creativity, endings and beginnings and therefore still honouring the cycle of life - birth, death and re-birth.  Elder is used in magic lore to connect with the Faerie realms and nature spirits and is reputed to protect against negative entities.

Other names for a Full Moon in December are: Cold Moon, Moon Before Yule, Long Night Moon (Northern Hemisphere) or Strawberry Moon, Honey Moon, Rose Moon (Southern Hemisphere). Names for the moon can also relate to the season, so this Full Moon could also be called the Harvest Moon, Hunter’s Moon, Frosty Moon, Beaver Moon, Moon before Yule or Long Night Moon (after the autumnal equinox)or Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Planting Moon, Milk Moon, Rose Moon, Flower Moon, Strawberry Moon (after the spring equinox).

  • St David's Day and Matronalia, 1st March 2019

Weslh dragonFriday 1st March is St David’s Day.  St. David, Dewi Sant, is the patron saint of the Welsh, and 1st March, his feast day, is celebrated as a patriotic and cultural festival in Wales.

Friday 1st March is Matronalia, according to Roman tradition, which was the topsy-turvy feast sacred to Juno, where the Mistress of the house waited on her servants for the day and presents were given to other people’s partners!

  • Summer Solstice, Thursday 21st June 2018

Thursday 21st June at 11.07 is the Pagan Celebration of the Solstice.

This year around 40 of us gathered at the Clandon Wood Nature Reserve to watch the sunrise:-

We enjoyed an amazing sunrise with a mystical cloud formation over the horizon.

After sunrise (officially 04.46 although it was getting light at around 4am), we enjoyed a guided meditation followed by a gong bath courtesy of Gary Evans and Olga Terebenina, Holistic Healing Therapy.  Photo below from last year when there were less of us.

You might be wondering, did we all roll around naked in the dew afterwards?  If so, there are no photos...

Thursday 21st June – Monday 2nd July is the Bootids Meteor Shower, predicted to be less active this year, peaking on Thursday 28th June (see Celestial Forecast entry under 28th June).

  • Sunday 16th May, Pagan Festival of Lunantisidhe

LunantisidheSunday 16th May is the Night of Lunantisidhe, a Celtic Festival honouring the fairy spirits of blackthorns.

From a website called selkywolf.com (no longer live), which featured extracts from 'A Witch's Guide to Faery Folk' by Edain McCoy, it seems that Lunantisidhe is a curious blending of the Latin word 'Luna' meaning 'moon' together with the Gaelic 'sidhe' which means 'faery'. They are the guardians of the blackthorn tree from which humans (and Leprechauns!) make shillelaghs, a walking stick indigenous to Ireland

These fairies are - according to an AngelFire site - 'Wizened little stick creatures with long arms and fingers for climbing between the thorns'. Their sole purpose for existing seems to be to protect the blackthorn trees from human encroachment. The only time they approach the tree is to pay homage to the Moon Goddess at the Esbats (a specifc Full Moon Wicca Ceremony which may have it's origins in Celtic folklore), perhaps explaining why their name has a lunar connotation.

According to another very informative site ecoenchantments.co.uk, unlike the majority of great mystic trees, the Blackthorn appears to be revered only in the British Isles (Celtic folklore of both Itish and Scottish tradition) with there being little or no association with the mythical traditions of other ancient civilisations.

The Blackthorn, latin name Prunus Spinosa, is a tree of profound magical lore in the Celtic tradition. It is one of the designated Eight Chieftain Trees on the Ogham Tract, where its name is Straif (strife, said to be where the word came from in the English dictionary) and translates as ‘Increaser of Secrets.’  I feel it brings a whole new meaning to 'trouble and strife' the Cockney rhyming slang for wife!

The Blackthorn is also know as sloe (after its fruit), sloe plum, snag, spiny plum, wishing thorn, faery tree, (dark) mother of the woods, pear hawthorn. Within the UK, the trees are an ancient, native pioneer species, with evidence that the fruits were eaten by early man. Blackthorn was used in Iron Age communities (c3400 yrs ago) as remains have been found, buried in a straw filled pit (believed to be used for ripening and preserving the bitter sloes) near Glastonbury in the Lake Village (recorded in a catalogue of findings by the excavator Arthur Bulleid).

Blackthorn is also wellknown for its medicinal benefits, having been catalogues by both herbalists, John Gerard in 1597:  ‘The juice of sloes do stop the belly, the laske and bloodie fluxe, the inordinate course of womens terms, and all other issues of blood in man or woman.’

Whilst Nicholas Culpeper, in 1653, recommends a decoction of the powdered bark of the roots, or of the fresh or dried berries as a cure for ‘lask of the belly , or stomach, or the bloody flux, and to ease the pains in the sides or bowels.’  He also recommended a distilled liquid of the flowers steeped in a highly honeyed mead, which he described as 'A most certain remedy, tried and approved, to ease all manner of gnawing in the stomach, sides and bowels, or any griping pains in any of them, to drink a small quantity when the extremity of the pain is upon them.’

Undoubtedly Sloe Gin is still enjoyed today (made annually by my husband's Uncle Ron, aged 83, with sloes collected from the countryside).  Perhaps the continued popularity is due to its therapeutic benefits.

As part of the Lunantisidhe festivities, holy trees marking sacred places and wells are acknowledged and new scraps of cloth are tied to their branches.

By keeping traditions, Pagan communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. The next RSE 1 module series started 14th May with Violet Flame of Amenti (late applicants accepted) and 17th May with Chakra Balancing, Axiatonal Alignment and Unity Consciousness.

During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

  • Sunday 1st August, Egyptian New Year & Celtic Lunasa or Lammas

1st August Khemitian New YearSunday 1st August marks the Ancient Egyptian New year, traditionally marked the start of the Nile flood, started by the tears of Aset (Isis) over the death of Asar (Osirus). The exact correlation of the Egyptian New year to the modern calendar is disputed, but I favour the linking with the heliacal rising of Sirius (dawn visibility of Sirius) as this star, known to the Egyptians as Sopdet (pronounced Soppday) was closely associated with Aset.

The indigenous name for Ancient Egypt was Khem. Khemitology is the study of Ancient Egypt according to the indigenous tribal elders & oral tradition wisdom keepers; which is quite different to traditional Egyptology though there is some overlap.  See Events & Courses for more about studying Khemitology as a stand alone online module or as part of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy healing

shutterstock 114601966 Pagan wheelIn the Northern Hemisphere, this is also the Pagan Celebration of Lunasa (also known as Lammas), this is the start of the harvest, season of pregnancy, ripening, transformation and peace. This marks the height of the northern summer, when the Earth is most alive. Spellings vary for this Celtic/Gaelic Festival, which can be called Lughnasadh or Lúnasa (this latter 'Irish' spelling ironically appears closest to what most English-speakers would regard as the phonetic pronunciation — luu-na-sa), see atriptoireland.com for more on this. It is certainly the great festival of Lugh, or Lug, the great Celtic Sun King [Egyptian origins spring to mind here] and God of Light, with August is Lugh's sacred month.  As someone interested in etymology (the study of words) I am thinking that surely the word 'light' (especially with the peculiar silent 'gh' which came to be identified with a host of other rhyming words in English such as sight and fright) comes from 'lugh'?

According to Celticdruidtemple.com, Lughnasa translates as "the games of Lugh" (pronounced as Lou or sometimes Luff) and alludes to the assembly for games coinciding with the first of three harvests. The month of August is apparently called Lughnasadh in Gaelic and it marks the last day of summer. This was a specifically Gaelic holiday and many of the other Celtic cultures also celebrate an autumn festival known by a range of names.  As Beltaine on 1st May marks the start of summer - Lughnasa marks the end of summer. Lughnasa is historically linked with Lugh, a leading Celtic deity and hero. These games with a bull sacrifice and major feast [with interesting echoes of the Egyptian Bull cult where Ausar (Osirus) was portrayed as a bull-headed deity), which I believe led to the unfortunate Mediterranean Bull Fighting tradition], and for some it was the start of a trial marriage.

In some Wiccan and modern Pagan traditions, this festival for honouring Lugh is known as Lammas (see thoughtco.com). Allegedly, the word Lammas derives from an Old English phrase hlaf-maesse, translating as loaf mass. Lammas was an annual ritual, recogniing a community's dependency on what Thomas Hardy referred to as 'the ancient pulse of germ and birth.'"

By keeping traditions, Pagan communities and those in Ancient Egypt retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

  • Sunday 1st November, Samonios, All Saints Day & World Vegan Day

Pagan image of SamoniosSunday 1st November starts the first month of the Celtic Year, called Samonios - 'Seed Fall'; mirroring the death/rebirth cycle of Asar (Osiris).

The Samonios image above and text below, by Helen Benigni, were kindly taken with permission some years ago from the angelfire.com website.

Further into the month shortly after the third quarter of the moon, a trio of stars including Rigel, Betelguese and Castor march across the sky to illiminate this Oenach of light and birth.

Sunday 1st November is also World Vegan Day.  In 1994, the event was established by Louise Wallis, then Chair of The Vegan Society, UK, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of coining the terms "vegan" and "veganism" and the founding of the organisation. November is nominated as World Vegan Month.

Traditional festivals like this helped communities to feel connected, bringing balance and harmony into people's lives.

Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians, in the form of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy Healing, to bring balance and harmony. Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) has been modularised so that Level One (introduction) is now available to complete online as 3 units. All the units can be taken alone but together make up the RSE 1 syllabus. The below modules complete the current cycle and are UK evenings, also offering US friendly afternoon time slots.

Essene Angelology & Three Personal Guardian Angel Reference Chart (£66) = ½ unit, 2 x 2¼-hour Thursday sessions, 7-9.15pm (UK time = GMT), 5th & 12th November. For details and to book, see  Virtual Training - Essene Angel Module.

Mindful Alignment with your 11-chakras and Axiatonal Awakening £66) = ½ unit, 3 x 2¼-hour Tuesday sessions, 7-9.15pm (UK time = GMT), 10th, 17th & 24th November. For details and to book, see Virtual Training - Chakra Healing & Unity Module.

Start dates for the earlier units we are just completing (full details here), will be offered again next spring.

Currently, due to Coronavirus, most events will be virtual hence MP3 meditations and distant readings and healings are proving popular. We don't recommend giving a reading or healing to another person, without first checking whether it would be welcomed.
