  • Sunday 22nd September, Ancient Egyptian Ritual of the Neteru of the Two Lands

Map of Lower Egypt from WikipediaSunday 22nd September is the Ancient Egyptian Ritual of the Neteru of the Two Lands

The Two Lands, comprising of Upper & Lower Egypt, were presided over by the more successful Pharoahs. To the north was Lower Egypt (see map from Wikipediaby Jeff Dahl - self-made, photoshop. based on File: Nomes of Ancient, CC BY-SA 3.0) where the Nile fans into the Nile Delta.

To the south was Upper Egypt, stretching to Aswan. The terms Upper and Lower Egypt are derived from the unusual geography of the Nile, which unlike most rivers, flows from south to north. Its origins are in the highlands of East Africa and it ends with the Nile Delta which drains into the Mediterannean Sea.

Double Crown of Egypt image from WikipediaIn Spiritual lore, Upper and Lower Egypt could be said to represent the higher and lower self of the human body, and as such would need to be integrated on an annual basis with the help of the Neteru (Deities or Angelic Beings).

The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt occurred in about 3000 BC, but the pschent - or double crown, see  Wikipedia image on the right - worn by the Pharoahs represented the combined regalia of both areas; the hedjet or White Crown for Upper Egypt and the deshret or Red Crown for Lower Egypt, each half representing sovereignty of one of the kingdoms.

Established Ancient Egyptian tradition generally credits Menes (also known as Narmer), as the king who united Upper and Lower Egypt.

On the Narmer Palette the king is depicted wearing the Red Crown in one scene and the White crown in another, and thereby showing his rule over both Lands.

22nd September is also an alternative date for the Ancient Egyptian Ceremony of Transformation through Anpu (Anubis), though most sources list it as 4th September.  Joanna was interviewed by Linda Lang from ThoughtChange for their Mystical Side of Life Podcast series - see it on YouTube or for audio go to Anchor.

anubis with sampleAn MP3 Meditation to overcome negative behaviour patterns is available from the Harmony Shop. The Egyptians believed that when a deceased soul entered the Halls of Amenti they would undergo a ceremony involving the metaphorical weighing of the heart (of the deceased) against Maat's feather, whereby the weight of the heart represents the degree to which the deceased lived in truth (that is how much he/she has sinned, the more he/she had sinned the heavier the heart). The meditation guides you through a journey with Anpu to see how you would fare if your heart was weighed against Maat's feather at this point in your life. This meditation was devised for 4th September, which being a Festival of Anpu would add emphasis, but can be used anytime.

Anpu is the illegitimate child of Nebt-Het (Nephthys), born of her clandestine union with Asar (Osiris) but raised as the son of Set. Cast out when his true lineage was discovered, he became associated with dark and lonely places, a wanderer through the shadow-realm between life and death, Anpu therefore bearing witness to the darker side of mortality. He seeks out those lost souls who find themselves without guidance after their demise. He guards the Entrance to the Underworld, presided over by his true father Asar.  Hence, all who die will find themselves in the presence of this mysterious Jackel-headed God, who escorts them away from this world and to the gates of the next.

A laminated poster of Anpu (Anubis) by Jacqui Taliesin El Masri of Alkhemi.co.uk - shown on the right - is also available from the Harmony Shop along with other Egyptian Deity posters by Jacqui.

  • Sunday 28th March @ 19:48, Equinox Easter Worm Full Moon & Palm Sunday

Easter Full Moon 28th March and healing circleSunday 28th March @ 19:48 is the Equinox Easter Worm Full Moon & Palm Sunday.

Between Full Moon and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

Click here foAngela McGerr's Full Moon Meditation with Gabriel, taken from Angela's A Harmony of Angels; signed copies of which are available from the Harmony Shop.

Tonight's Full Moon is nicknamed the Worm Moon!  This month, the moon fixes the date for Easter, as Easter Sunday is always immediately after the first full moon following the Equinox (Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere). So Easter Sunday will be 4th April.

If you are looking for regular spiritually enlightening activities during lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle on Sunday 28th March, at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT+1), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee). During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness, and we make a positive difference in the world (see this Youtube footage for explanation of how this affects the global situation).

This Full Moon Virtual Circle as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

Essence of the MoonOur Full Moon image this month is called Essence of the Moon painting by Zoe Hudson. For commission enquiries, see Zoe's website or email

The Worm Moon, was so named by the Native American tribes who named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons. There isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. Some Native Americans identified the Worm Moon with earthworm casts appearing as the spring warmth develops and hence the birds finding their food. Other tribes knew it as the Crow Moon, Lenten Moon and Sap Moon. American Farmers have adopted these titles so that they are still used today. (See article in the Telegraphfor more on this).

Although the Celts were believed to have revered nature, the idea that they also had tree names for each Full Moon of the year, is neo-Pagan, having been introduced by Robert Graves in the 1948, which I find rather charming. So, according to Robert Graves's imaginings, this is the Alder Moon. At this time of year the Alder is prominent and flourishing on the river banks, with its roots dipping in the water, offering itself up as a magical bridge between heaven and earth. Known as Fearn (pronounced Faerin) it is associated with Faerie Magic; an ideal time for spiritual decision-making relating to divination and prophesy, as well as for honing our intuitive skills. Alder twigs and flowers are well known charms in Faerie Lore, with Alder shoots being used to make whistles and flutes to commune with the air elementals. More about this at learnreligions.com or Celtic Weirdness website.

Being very close to the Equinox, the Alder Moon will carry the frequency of balance and harmony embodied by the Equinox when light and dark are in perfect balance.

  • Thursday 11th February, New Moon @ 19.05; Chinese New Year's Eve

New Moon image pngThursday 11th February is the New Moon @ 19:05.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy. There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

It's also the final day of the Chinese Year of the Metal Rat, making it Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve.

It is a fabulous day for creating a personal or corporate Vision Board for 2021. Creating a Vision Board which illustrates pictorially how you envisage your goals taking shape, really helps to make the possibilities seem real and attainable and gives a source of reference later when you want to look back and compare what you set out to achieve to what has materialised in the interim. Focussing on what you want to manifest in your life is a really effective way of bringing harmony and balance into your life.

Our New Year New Vision Lunar alignment course ends today. I can't believe it's almost over, the feedback has been amazing. Here's a typical response:

As we're almost at the end of the course, but still the beginning of a journey, I thought I'd share a few of the things that have changed for me during this moon cycle.

I have more space within... I can literally feel it - possibly as a result of the Soul Star and Earth Star Chakras attunement, and also because of the releasing that has been happening over the last 2 weeks.
I have recovered a routine which brings about a more productive day.
My brain has tuned into the fact that I need to lose weight... I've let go of snacking, I'm having beautiful detox baths and have done the oil pulling. I am doing daily dance exercises.
I am meditating more and got back on track with daily self-Reiki.
    I'm seeing the bigger picture.
    I am generally more focused.

Such positive stuff for everyday living! 💜
Yvonne Oaks, Light From Within, London, 10th February 2021

The next lunar alignment course will run 12th April to 11th May, taking in the Pagan Celebration of Beltane and the 555 numerology of 1st May.

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the New moon (good for starting new projects) and Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Thursday 12th December, Elder Full Moon plus 3:3:3 numerology again

Thursday 12th December is the Elder Full Moon @ 05.14 (Wednesday day night/Thursday morning) and as it is a numerological 12:12:12 as well as the second example of 3:3:3 numerology this month, I will be conducting an Awaken Your Avatar guided meditation from 3pm - 3.33pm (UK time), see below for details.

If you are an angel fan, the angel of the Moon is Gabriel.

To the left is a beautiful image of Gabriel by Richard Rockwood from my sister Angel McGerr's A Harmony of Angels book (and Harmony Angel Cards).

Both are out of print and collectible but we still have a few remaining copies via the Harmony Shop.

See link for instructions on Angela's Angelic Meditation with Gabriel.

At the time of the Full Moon the Sun and Moon are in opposition. The solar (sun) energy influences our masculine/yang archetypal attributes (our outer world) such as strength, courage, identity, self-esteem, expression, conscious beliefs and determination together with our logical outlook.  Whereas the lunar energy (moon) influences our femininely archetypal attributes (our inner world), such as our unconscious beliefs, hidden emotions, nurturing feelings, creativity and intuition. The Full Moon is a powerful and appropriate time to show gratitude for life and the riches and bounty bestowed upon us by Mother Earth (Gaia).

The Celts had names for each Full Moon of the year, and associated each with a tree; this is the Elder Moon(thoughtco.com). The Elder Moon marks a time of passing. The Elder bush damages easily but bursts back into life recovering promptly and so it is represents the coming New Year. The Celts called this month Ruish (pronounced roo-esh) and it's a time for renewal, rejuvenation and creativity, endings and beginnings and therefore still honouring the cycle of life - birth, death and re-birth.  Elder is used in magic lore to connect with the Faerie realms and nature spirits and is reputed to protect against negative entities.

Other names for a Full Moon in December are: Cold Moon, Moon Before Yule, Long Night Moon (Northern Hemisphere) or Strawberry Moon, Honey Moon, Rose Moon (Southern Hemisphere). Names for the moon can also relate to the season, so this Full Moon could also be called the Harvest Moon, Hunter’s Moon, Frosty Moon, Beaver Moon, Moon before Yule or Long Night Moon (after the autumnal equinox)or Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Planting Moon, Milk Moon, Rose Moon, Flower Moon, Strawberry Moon (after the spring equinox). Source = earthsky.org.

The time between any Full Moon and the next New Moon is a good time, energetically, to detox the body. I recommend anoil pulling technique, with coconut oil, which must be from a glass container for best taste.

Jo with avatar insetThursday 12th December, at 3pm (UK time is GMT/UT) for 33 minutes, I am offering my Awaken Your Avatar online programme (via Zoom) to take advantage of the 3:3:3 energy (see below for a reminder of this powerful numerology). Cost to participate is £13.33 per person. See Awaken Your Avatar on Harmony Healing website for details and to book. The Awaken Your Avatar meditation involves working with the Violet flame of transmutation to identify and overcome what is holding you back from achieving your full potential.

Thursday 12th December, as well as being the Full Moon, is also the second 3:3:3 numerology for this month, for which I've chosen the theme Awaken Your Avatar; which is basically a suggestion that we consolidate our internal conflict. This involves balancing our masculine/feminine, home/work-life, even positive/negative personality traits, and focussing on connecting with our inner knowing (Higher Self) which we all hold within. This also means opening the heart and working toward integrating the Higher Self (spiritual aspects) and Lower Self (basic functional needs) to create an enlightened being (Avatar). Below is a recap of the 3:3:3 numerology and theme for this month.

2019 is a '3' year in numerology (2+0+1+9 = 12, then 1+2 =3), December is the 12th month, where the digits add up to 3 (as they did in March being the third month). Hence the 3rd, 12th, 21st and 30th December provide four individual examples of 3:3:3 numerology, which can be interpreted as meaning 'Awaken your Avatar' as well as 'creating heaven on earth'. These dates will all offer amplified energies for manifesting our hopes and dreams.  See also the Harmony Healing Blog entry below for 3rd December for more anecdotes about the 3:3:3 numerology.

  • Thursday 1st March/Friday 2nd March, Full Moon

    Thursday 1st March/Friday 2nd March @ 00.52 (Thursday night/Friday morning) is the Full Moon.

Between Full Moon and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

Click here foAngela McGerr's Full Moon Meditation with Gabriel. Image of Angel Gabriel (above left) by Richard Rockwood, is taken from Angela McGerr's Harmony Angel cards; signed copies area available from the Harmony Shop.

Due to the rare way the dates have fallen this year, we had two Full Moons in January, none on February and two again in March. Tonight's Full Moon is nicknamed the Worm Moon!  The 2nd Full Moon this month, on the 31st March, will be another Blue Moon according to the more recent definition, as it will be the 2nd Full Moon in this calendar month.  This month, the 2nd moon fixes the date for Easter, as Easter Sunday is always immediately after the first full moon following the Equinox (Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere).  So Easter Sunday will be 1st April.

(See article in the Telegraph for more on this)

Similarly, the Celts also had names for each Full Moon of the year. This is the Ash Moon.  As mentioned in my earlier Blog about the naming of Ash Wednesday, one of Odin's names in Norse is Ygg, which also means Ash, with the World tree, Yggdrasil, being an Ash.  Odin's spear was made from this tree. The Druids, venerated all nature but the three most sacred trees to them was the Ash, Oak and Thorn. The Ash tree features a great deal in Irish and Scottish folklore (the latter also including the Rowan, a form of Mountain Ash).  In the 12th Century, Marie de France wrote one of her famous lais about the Ash. The Ash is associated with rituals, magic and prophesy, making it a perfect choice for divining. Indeed, traditionally, more tools were made from Ash than any other wood, because it's not only very strong but it also resists shock (better than other hard woods such as oak or beech) making it an ideal choice for tool handles.  Ash berries were placed inside a baby's cradle to prevent the child being replaced with a 'changeling'.  More about this at the Celtic Weirdness website I happily stumbled upon.

Whilst writing this Blog article I wondered if our word 'ash' for something burnt was derived from the possible act of burning the magical tools (made predominantly of Ash) in an attempt to destroy the power of the Celtic Priests.

  • Thursday 28th January, Imbolc Rowan or Wolf Full Moon @ 19.16

Gabriel with full moon Insta imageThursday 28th January @ 19.16 is the Imbolc Rowan Full Moon. The Celtic Festival of Imbolc is only a few days away (see below). The January Full moon is also known as the Wolf Moon.

The Wolf Moon was created by Antonia Skelton for Harmony Healing.

The Celts had names for each Full Moon of the year. This is the Rowan Moon (learnreligions.com), known by the Celts as Luis (pronounced lou-ish). The Rowan is associated with the Fire Goddess Brigit revered at Imbolc earlier this month (1st/2nd February). Brigit protects mothers, families, the home and hearth fires rituals. The Rowan is connected with success, astral travel and personal power. It's viewed as a favourable time for self-dedication or for initiations; with a symbol carved into a piece of Rowan being considered protective.  Rowan branches were used by Norsemen as protective rune staves.

Similarly, the Native American tribes named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons. As mentioned above, they called the January Full Moon the Wolf Moon. There isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. Why Native American tribes (and Medieval Europeans) are said to have referred to this as a Wolf Moon is thought to be because hungry wolves howled more at this time of year since less food was available. American Farmers have adopted these titles so that they are still used today. (See article in the Telegraph for more on this).

Between Full Moon and the next New Moon (Wednesday 11th February) is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.  Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Thursday 31st October, Samhain or Halloween

Shutterstock Pagan Wheel InageThursday 31st October  traditionally marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the Celtic and Pagan New Year. Samhain is Irish-Gaelic for 'the Summer's end', and is pronounced 'sow-in'.

Samhain represents the death of the summer sun god, Lugh. This festival celebrates Nature's cycle of death and renewal.  This is traditionally known as Halloween and is considered a time when the veil is thin between ours and other dimensions hence we can sense the presence of our ancestors more easily.

Samhain is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals; along with Lughnasadh, Imbolc and Beltane.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Samhain heralds the beginning of Winter when the world starts to darken and the days are getting shorter; the 'dark half' of the year and the demise of the sun's uplifting influence.

The crone, personified as Cailleach - the Queen of the Winter - was reborn on every All Hallows Eve, returning to bring the Winter and protect animals through the coldest months. She turned to stone on Beltane Eve, Beltane being 1st May.

    According to Edwin Courtenay

On Halloween (Samhain), the veil between the worlds is thin because the old Celtic year is ending and the new Celtic year about to begin. This day and night - not one thing or the other - is a luminal space used by the Spirits of the Dead to visit those they love who they have left behind.

In the Witches circle a door is opened in the East and the dead invited to walk through and commune with the living. In ancient days, plates were laid at the table and filled with food for the dead (a tradition still followed by some) the plate placed outside at the end of the night for the phantoms to feast on. On this day candles are lit and the loved ones gone before are remembered, grieved and loved. On this night the Horned Lord of the Witches rides with his ghostly troupe rescuing the lost and Earth bound Souls seeking peace.

The ghosts of Halloween are not Gouls and monsters but our relatives and friends, come not to terrify but to love. Welcome them then and share this night together and know that there is nothing to fear from the dead.

Edwin also explains what is meant by the 'veil is thin':

Midnight has always been known as the Witching Hour... but why?

Midnight is a luminal space - not quite one day or the other but rather a space between, a betwixt between and therefore a space close to the Spirit world and the Gods! There are other luminal moments of course - dawn and dusk and also luminal spaces such as thresholds, archways, wells and lakes. Places that are natural gateways, that harbour unseen things (like the evil eye - which is why we lift brides over thresholds - so the evil eye doesn’t see them) and other powers!

These moments are powerful then and the times when witches weave their spells - especially on Halloween night!!!

  • Tuesday 11th May, Beltane New Micro Moon @ 20:00

    New Moon image png

Tuesday 11th May is New Moon @ 20:00. This is Beltane Dark Micro Moon.

A Micromoon happens when a New Moon or Full Moon coincides with the apogee; when the Moon's orbit is farthest away from Earth. Because the Moon orbits Earth on an elliptical path, one side of the path is always closer to the Earth than the other. See  timeanddate.com for more about this.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy.

There are video instructions on my Facebook Page and/or You Tube Page.

New Moon is a good time to work on your Vision Board for the rest of 2021. This New Moon in May marks the completion of my New Moon New Vision course which ran for the lunar cycle 12th April to 11th May, taking in the Pagan Celebration of Beltane and the 555 numerology of 5th May. The programme included moon meditations, daily affirmations, vision board creation, manifestation and energy attunements! The next New Moon Vision course will be Saturday 10th July to Sunday 8th August (incorporating 1st August Lammas/Lunasa) or Wednesday 6th October to Thursday 4th November (incorporating 31st October Samhain/Halloween).

The energy of this time is great for new projects and manifestation! Follow the link in my bio for abundance rituals and more on my site.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy. There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the New moon (good for starting new projects) and Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. The next RSE 1 module series starts 14th May with Violet Flame of Amenti and 17th May with Chakra Balancing, Axiatonal Alignment and Unity Consciousness.

If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities following lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle later this month on Wednesday 26th May at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT+1), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee). During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

  • Tuesday 22nd September, Equinox @ 14.30 and Ancient Egyptian Ritual of the Neteru of the Two Lands

Solstice image licensed by DreamtimeTuesday 22nd September at 14.30 is the Pagan Celebration of the Autumn Equinox, marking the time of harvest festival and fulfilment of summer; since, in the Northern Hemisphere, from now on there will be more dark than light for the rest of the year. An equinox is an astronomical event when the plane of Earth's equator passes the center of the Sun. Equinoxes occur twice a year, around 21 March and 22/3 September.

Tuesday 22nd September is the Ancient Egyptian Ritual of the Neteru of the Two Lands

Map of Lower Egypt from WikipediaThe Two Lands, comprising of Upper & Lower Egypt, were presided over by the more successful Pharoahs. To the north was Lower Egypt (see map from Wikipedia) where the Nile fans into the Nile Delta.

The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt occurred in about 3000 BC, but the pschent - or double crown, see  Wikipedia image on the left - worn by the Pharoahs represented the combined regalia of both areas; the hedjet or White Crown for Upper Egypt and the deshret or Red Crown for Lower Egypt, each half representing sovereignty of one of the kingdoms.

Established Ancient Egyptian tradition generally credits Menes (also known as Narmer), as the king who united Upper and Lower Egypt. On the Narmer Palette the king is depicted wearing the Red Crown in one scene and the White crown in another, and thereby showing his rule over both Lands.

By keeping traditions, ancient communities in Egypt retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives. Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians to bring balance and harmony.

The next virtual healing circle is 7.30-9.30pm (UK time), 1st October, which is Ivy Full Moon. During this session, which costs £10, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all partipants will experience a degree of unity consciousness.  This activity serves as a good taster of Joanna's work in general.

  • Tuesday 30th April, Beltane Eve

    Beltane Bonfire image

Tuesday 30th April is the Eve of Beltane; Pagan celebrations begin with people singing and dancing clockwise around the fire. The name 'Beltane' derives from the Celtic Deity 'Bel' (definition = 'the bright one') together with 'teine' – the Gaelic word for fire. The combined meaning is 'Goodly Fire' or 'Bright Fire', hence bonfires were lit to encourage the Sun to nurture the forthcoming harvest and to honour Bel ask for his protection of the local community. Bel seemingly required human effort before providing support so traditionally all community fires were extinguished and two Tein-eigen (translates as need-fire) bonfires were specially kindled for Beltane. Cattle were driven between the fires to purify them with the smoke and bring fertility. People jumped over the fire (not the huge ones I presume) to cleanse, purify and enhance fertility.  Couples pledged themselves to each other by jumping the fires together and to bless their union. After the celebrations, which ran from sunset 30th April to sunset on 1st May, the villagers took a bit of the Teineigen to start fresh fires in their home hearth.

Dew gathered at dawn from the grass is traditionally used in potions for luck and it is thought to be lucky to roll naked in the dew!!!  I remember collecting the dew at dawn for luck as an adolescent but I didn't try the rolling naked in the dew so can't testify to whether that works for anything other than risking (indecent) exposure.

On Beltane itself, it's traditional to drink from a well before sunrise, then wash in the morning dew, adorn yourself with greenery, watch the sun come up, dance round the Maypole and otherwise abandon yourself to the season! Round Full Moon Cakes are eaten together with blackberry, elderberry, dandelion wine (or cider) being drunk. Visits are made to sacred springs where healing water is drunk.  The image above shows a Beltane Fire on Calton Hill in Edinburgh and is taken from the Wikipedia page on Beltane.

Thanks also to Glastonbury-based Goddessandgreenman.co.ukwebsite who also credit Sacred Celebrations by Glennie Kindred as their information source.  There are always amazing annual Beltane and May Day celebrations in Glastonbury.

  • Wednesday 1st May, Beltane and Bona Dea

shutterstock 114601966 Pagan wheelWednesday 1st May is May Day and Beltane - a Celtic word meaning 'fires of Bel' (Bel was a Celtic and Gaelic Deity). It is a fire festival that celebrates the coming of summer and the fertility of the coming year. Celtic festivals often tied in with the needs of the community.

In springtime, at the beginning of the farming calendar, everybody would be hoping for a fruitful year for their fields and hence also their families. Beltane rituals would often include courting: for example, young men and women collecting blossoms in the woods and lighting fires in the evening.

These rituals would often lead to matches and marriages, either immediately in the coming summer or autumn. Beltane is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals; along witLughnasadh, Samhain and Imbolc - as shown on the Pagan Wheel on the right, courtesy of Shutterstock (licence paid).

Wednesday 1st May was also the annual Roman Festival of Bona Dea. In Roman mythology, Bona Dea (literally "the good goddess") was the goddess of fertility, healing, virginity, and women. She was the daughter (or wife/sister depending on sources) of the nature-god Faunus and was associated with supplying medicinal healing herbs in her temple garden. Bona Dea was also invoked for freedom from slavery; many of her worshippers were freed slaves and plebeians, and many were women seeking aid in sickness or for fertility. This Festival was celebrated by women only, with men being barred from any knowledge of her mysteries!

This would have comprised part of the six day Roman Festival of Floralia, commencing on 28th April (Julian Calender equivalent), detailed on my earlier Blog.

  • Wednesday 30th December @ 03.30, Birch Full Moon

Angel Gabriel by Richard Rockwood from Angela McGerrs Harmony Angel CardsWednesday 30th December @ 03.30 is the Birch Full Moon. So the night of Tuesday 29th December will be when the moon looks fullest in the night sky.

So we are holding the next virtual healing circle on Tuesday 30th December is at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT), cost is £10 (+ £1 Paypal fee). During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

The Full Moon has a gravitation effect on the Earth, hence leading to a tidal impact on our oceans. Whilst it is has not been scientifically proven, it is logical to assume that this also has an impact on us as we are largely comprised of water (60-80% supposedly).

According to London Astrologer Tanya Cohen: UNITED WE STAND
"It feels fitting that we’re ending the year with a Full Moon in Cancer (30th December – 03.30am GMT). Culminating such a challenging year with this sensitive Full Moon, is an opportunity for profound emotional release; a time for processing and integrating all that we’ve been through so we can move into 2021 with a lighter load, a clearer vision and perhaps even a skip in our step."

If you'd like to receive Tanya's fascinating Astrological Reviews or have a personal chart drawn up by her (I've had one - amazing) get in touch via .

If you are an angel fan, the angel of the Moon is Gabriel. Left is a beautiful image of Gabriel by Richard Rockwood from my sister Angel McGerr's A Harmony of Angels book (and Harmony Angel Cards). Both are out of print and collectible but we still have a few remaining copies via the Harmony Shop. See link for instructions on Angela's Angelic Meditation with Gabriel.

The Celts had names for each Full Moon of the year, and associated each with a tree; this is the Birch Moon (learnreligions.com). The Celts called this month Beth (pronounced beh). The Birch Moon is linked with rebirth and regeneration, with growing light  following the Winter Solstice here is the Northern Hemisphere. After forest fires (sadly there have been way too many of these internationally), Birch is the first tree to regrow. The birch is also associated with healing, protection and creative magic, especially regarding fertility. To keep sacred writings safe, they would be written on Birch bark. A red ribbon tied around the trunk of a Birch tree is said to ward off negative energy and a Birch twig can be hung over a cradle for spychic protection for a new born.

Other names for a Full Moon in December are: Cold Moon, Moon Before Yule (though it's after Yule this year!), Long Night Moon (Northern Hemisphere) or Strawberry Moon, Honey Moon, Rose Moon (Southern Hemisphere).

As avoiding toxins is recommended for the Ivy Moon, detoxing might also be advisable. I recommend an oil pulling technique, with coconut oil, which must be from a glass container for best taste.

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the New moon (good for starting new projects) and Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Wednesday 8th April (Tuesday night/Wednesday morning), Easter Alder Supermoon @ 03.35

Wednesday 8th April @ 03.35 (Tuesday night/Wednesday morning) UK time (which is currently GMT/UT + 1) Is Easter Alder Full Moon and Supermoon.

This moon will be at it's closest @ 19.08 UK time, on Tuesday April 7th (reaching 357,035 km distance from Earth at its Apogee),and coming only 8.5 hours before the moon reaches lunar perigee (see note below), it's the second of three Supermoons this year and it will be the closest and brightest Supermoon of 2020 (sources:Earthsky.org and timeanddate.com).

A Supermoon is when the moon appears larger in the sky because it is reaches the closest proximity to Earth (known as the perigee*) coinciding with the New Moon or Full Moon. Since the New Moon is only a sliver to the naked eye, the Full Moon Supermoons are much more of a visual treat, when the moon may appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than on any other Full Moon occasion. Although it may not seem all that noticeable to us and of course it will depend on good clear viewing conditions; however due to an optical illusion, it will always look bigger and more luminous when closer to the horizon.

*The moon orbits around the Earth in an ellipse which takes just over 29 days, meaning that it reaches points in the year when it is at its closest (perigee, when it is about 363,000 km away) and furthest (apogee, when it is about 405,500 KM) from our planet. Those old enough might be reminded of Bed Knobs and Broomsticks when Angela Lansbury mentions the perigee and apogee in one of her invocations!

Click here foAngela McGerr's Full Moon Meditation with Gabriel. Image of Angel Gabriel (above left) by Richard Rockwood, is taken from Angela McGerr's Harmony Angel cards; signed copies area available from the Harmony Shop.

This full moon fixes the date for Easter, as Easter Sunday is always immediately after the first full moon following the Equinox (Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere). So Easter Sunday will be 12th April. This year, that moon appears on Thursday 8th April, which means Easter Sunday falls four days later, on Sunday April 12th. So that makes this Full Moon the Paschal Moon.

The Celts had names for each Full Moon of the year, this is the Alder Moon. More about this at thoughtco.com and Celtic Weirdness website which seem to show the same basic information.  I'm not sure which one is the original source (if either).

Similarly, Native American tribes named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons. There isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. According to telegraph.co.ukApril's full moon is known as the Pink Moon, but don't be fooled into thinking it will turn pink. It's actually named after pink wildflowers (generally phlox), which appear in North America in early spring. In 2020, the Pink Moon will also be the second full supermoon Full Moon of the year and always appears during the same month as the Lyrid meteor shower.

It is also known as the Egg Moon, due to spring egg-laying season. Some coastal tribes referred to it as Fish Moon because it appeared at the same time as the shad swimming upstream.

Between Full Moon and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

Anyway, whatever the weather conditions, it's a fantastic excuse to get people of all ages outside in the fresh air and re-connecting with nature. Something our modern lifestyles and obsession with technology can distract us from doing...

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Joanna's Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. For a reminder of Joanna's Harmony Healing events, some of which may be available as virtual courses, see this recent Harmony Healing Summer UpdateSome downloadable healing meditations have been prepared for use during and after lockdown. On 22nd April 2020, there's also an Equilibium Attunement (this linked page also explains what to expect from an attunement) available for £44.44.

Currently, due to Coronavirus, most events will be virtual hence distant readings and healings are proving popular. I don't recommend giving a reading or healing to another person, without first checking whether it would be welcomed.

  • Winter Solstice, 21st December 2017

Thursday 21st December is the Pagan Solstice @ 16.28.  Here in the UK, it's the Winter Solstice; the shortest day of the year with only 7 hours and 50 minutes daylight between Dawn (at 08.03 in London) until Dusk (at 15.53 in London). The solstice itself is the time when the sun is shining farthest to the south, directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, so the time varies every year, between December 20th and 23rd.

The solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years as a major Pagan festival with rituals of rebirth. Revellers will gather at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise on the shortest day. Then, here in the Northern Hemisphere, our days will gradually get longer until the summer solstice on Thursday 21st June 2018.

Many believe that the traditions now associated with Christmas had their roots in Pagan Winter Solstice celebrations; including misteltoe, Yule logs and even Christmas trees. The Druids  - an ancient Celtic order of priests, diviners, teachers and magicians who gleaned knowledge and enlightenment from ancient trees such as ‘Tutorial Oaks’ and sacred landscapes - used evergreen trees, mistletoe and holly (could the word 'holy' be derived from this) to represent everlasting life.  Druids consider the cutting of trees an offence against nature, but would happily decorate them with colourful rags tied onto the branches.

22 22 Silver Platinum Star Gate of Moons from Angela McGerrs Love Light CardsAccording to Simone Metthews at UniversalLifeTools, this year, as every year, we have an interesting galactic alignment between the 18th December (which happened to be the New Moon this year) and the 22nd December.  During this period the Earth, Sun and Galactic Centre (in Sagittarius) are aligned along the same plane within our Milky Way.  We also have what Simone refers to as a Galactic Evolutionary Tetrahedron formed by connecting the Earth, Sirius, Alcyone (in the constellation of Taurus) with our Galactic Centre.

Simone recommends that during this time we can energetically connect wth the structure of the water within us and set the intention fornit to become liquid cystalline.  This is said to activate our DNA and attune us to our genetic potential and achieve the best template for ourselves to help us towards our evolutionary and life purpose.  More details on the Galactic Alignment on Simone's website.

I will be meditating on this between 05.00 and 06.00hrs at Clandon Wood Nature Reserve tomorrow morning followed by a gong session with Gary Evans and Olga Terebenina.  The image on the right shows 22:22 Silver Platinum Star Gate of Moons drawn by Richard Rockwood from Angela McGerr's Love & Light Cards.
