  • Friday 2nd April, Good Friday in the Christian Calendar

Good Friday 2nd AprilFriday 2nd April is the Christian Festival of Good Friday, which is a Bank Holiday in the UK as part of the Easter break. Whereas the Easter celebration in the UK is based on the Gregorian Calendar, the Orthodox Easter celebrations are based on the Julian Calendar. This year that places Orthodox Easter 30th April - 3rd May, considerably after the UK Bank Holidays take place.

Good Friday commemorates the Day when Jesus was crucified.

It was not called ‘Good Friday’ until the 4th Century and may be a corruption of God’s Friday.

  • Friday 5th March, Khemitian Festival of Ploiaphesia

Ploiaphesia 5th MarchFriday 5th March is Ploiaphesia Egyptian Festival of Navigation.

This was when one of the most important festivals of the Egyptian Goddess Isis was celebrated, the Ploiaphesia or Navigium Isidis (Ship of Isis).

Isis was the name for this iconic Goddess used after the Greeks occupied Egypt (from 332 BCE) and introduced the 'is' feminine endings.  In earlier times, the locals called their land Khem or Khemit.

My Indigenous Egyptian mentor, and revered Tribal Elder, Hakim Awayan (who died in 2008) coined the phrases Khemitianwhen referring to authentic Ancient Egyptian traditions and Khemitologyto refer to indigenous Egyptology before the Greek (and subsequent Arabic) influences.

In Khemitology, Isisis known as Aset (also spelt Auset or Iset). A statue of Aset was carried in procession from her temple down to the harbour, where a specially-built ship was moored.

laminated poster of Aset (Isis) by Jacqui Taliesin El Masry, Founder of Alkhemi, is available from the Harmony Shop.

The Ploiaphesiafestival marked the opening of the safe sailing season after the stormy weather of winter had passed.

The ship would then be loaded with offerings and dedicated to the Goddess, before being launched and carried out to sea by the wind. The festival is described by Apuleius in his Metamorphoses (also known as the Golden Ass).

To participate you can enjoy the energy of water and celebrate with processions, lights, mirrors, music and flowers.

I would be delighted if you choose to share this blog with others who might enjoy it, you can use the social media share buttons at the top.

Aligning ourselves with other members of the community through mutual celebration is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. We have a new series of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1Egyptian Alchemy healing modules starting this month with Mindful Chakra Balancing & Unity Consciousness on Tuesday evenings starting 11th March and Essene Angelology on Thursday evenings commencing 16th March. These modules are £66 each.

  • Monday 15th February, Lupercalia - Ancient Roman Festival

    lupercalia final

Monday 15th February is Lupercalia in Ancient Roman tradition. Apparently, this was the popular ceremony of fertility, featuring naked men running through the street!  I can’t see this catching on in the UK climate!

Ancient inages show men dressed as dogs (or possibly Wolves since Lupus meant Wolf) and goats, Cupid and other personifications of fertility. Supposedly, the specially nominated priesthood for the occasion were called the Luperci ("brothers of the wolf"), and during the fertility ritual they paraded the streets around Rome either naked, or near naked, carrying strips of leather which were used to thrash in the direction of the gathered audience.

It was believed that any pregnant ladies struck by the whips would have an easier birthing process and any other ladies, whether considered barren or otherwise, would be granted fertility.

Hence, some say this ceremony was the precursor for Valentine’s Day (see entry below for 14th February).

The Ancient Romans believed that celebrating Lupercalia would enhance their fertility and hence improve their personal harmony and wellbeing.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. We have a new series of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1Egyptian Alchemy healing courses starting this week with Violet Flame on Tuesday evening and Khemitology on Thursday evening.

  • Monday 3rd May, UK May Day Bank Holiday, Egyptian Festival of Sham El Nassim, Easter Monday in Orthodox Christianity

Bank Holiday nature TrailMonday 3rd May is May Day Bank Holiday in the UK in 2021.

This is generally celebrated on the first Monday after 1st May to give us a long weekend to rest and recuperate. Last year it was moved to commemorate VE Day.

Children and off school and the banks are closed to celebrate May Day on the first weekday of the month,

This is a great day for children (and adults) to enjoy nature.

Why not take the children to a National Trust property, local park or a nature reserve, or to your local woodlands for some fun in the fresh air.

One way for adults to enjoy some therapeutic time in nature this month is to book for a Forest Bathing Session.

We have Surrey Forest Bathing events on Saturday 15th May at Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary (Shere), and Thursday 27th May at Newlands Corner, AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) near Guildford. Cost is £38.32 for three hours of sensory mindfulness and relaxation in stunning and tranquil woodland including Eventbrite admin fee.

Sham El Nassim 5th AprilAs mentioned in an earlier Blog, the Easter celebration in the UK is based on the Gregorian Calendar, wheras the Orthodox uses the Julian calendar to determine their holy days. Easter for the Orthodox Church falls sometime between April 4th and May 8th each year, this year it's Friday April 30th - Monday 3rd May.

In Egypt, the ancient festival of Sham El Nassim (literally meaning "smelling of the breeze") dates back to Pharaonic times (about 2700 BC) although it is celebrated on the Coptic Easter Monday, which aligns with the Orthodox Easter (so this year on the 3rd May). It's not seen as a religious festival as it's a National Holiday for both Egyptian Christians and Muslims. Traditional activities include painting eggs, picnicking, and eating feseekh (fermented mullet).

By honouring and respecting cutural traditions, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing wellbeing into their lives.

Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. The next RSE 1 module series starts 14th May with Violet Flame of Amenti and 17th May with Chakra Balancing, Axiatonal Alignment and Unity Consciousness.

If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities following lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the next virtual healing circle later this month on Wednesday 26th May at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT+1), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee). • Sunday 14th March, Mothering Sunday in UK

Mothers Day 14thSunday 14th March is Mothering Sunday in  the UK, now viewed as a chance to recognise  the positive role of mothers in our lives. Often posies of daffodils are presented.

Mothering Sunday is celebrated by Christians  in the UK & Ireland and some other English speaking countries. It takes place on the fourth Sunday in Lent, which is exactly three weeks before Easter Day. It was once observed as a day when people visited their mother church, but has become a day for honouring mothers and exchanging presents with them. Increasingly it's being referred to as Mother's Day, although that name originated as an American secular holiday, celebrated on a different date and quite distinct from the initial UK based Mothering Sunday.

By keeping traditions, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

We have two new interactive mentoring courses series starting this month.  The Mindful Chakra Balancing & Unity Consciousness on Thursday evenings, starting 11th March (late starters accommodated) and Essene Angelology on Tuesday evenings which is detailed above. These modules are £66 each.

  • Tuesday 16th February, Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (Pancake Day)

Flipping pancakesTuesday 25th February is Mardi Gras, also known as Shrove Tuesday, or within the UK as Pancake Day. Being the final day before Lent, this was traditionally a day for confessing sins and using up all the foods banned during the Lent fast. With pancakes containing butter and milk, they became associated with the date.

The days leading up to and into Lent were Collop Monday, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Fritter Thursday and Kissing Friday(source: Lia Leendertz's2020 Almanac).

The verb 'shrive' means to gain absolution for one's sins through confession and/or penance. Hence Shrove Tuesday is derived from the tradition that Christians were 'shriven' before Lent. The date of Lent - which takes place in either February or March but always seven weeks before Easter - varies from year to year according to the lunar calendar which determines when Easter falls. The fact that Lent, and indeed Easter, are determined by the lunar calendar tends to suggest that they were superimposed over Pagan celebrations.

Interestingly, as with many Christian Festivals, there is a theory that Pancake Day might actually have originated as a Pagan holiday; when eating warm, circular yellow pancakes - resembling the sun - celebrated the arrival of spring.

By partaking in Pancake Day, confessing sins and living a modest life throughout the period of Lent, Christian's believed that it would enhance their harmony and wellbeing.

Aligning ourselves with other members of the community through mutual celebration is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.
