  • 24th June, Midsummer's Day in British Tradition & Fors Fortuna in Roman Tradition

24th June Mid Summers DaySaturday 24th June is Midsummers Day and was considered magical in Cornwall and Ireland, when there was feasting, fires, songs, and dances. Bonfires were kindled on high hills to commemorate the high point of the year.

Traditionally, the veil is thin between the dimensions housing the living and the dead at this time, hence its setting for Shakepeare's Play a Midsummer Night's Dream.

June 24th was designated as a feast celebration called St John's Day in the Christian Calendar, dedicated to the marytr St John The Baptist. The observance begins the night before as St John's Eve.  It's also commemorated in Freemasonry.

However, Midsummer's Day celebrations long predates Christianity, and has existed under different names and traditions globally.

24th June is also the Roman Festival of Fors Fortuna. Fors is an ancient Roman Goddess of prosperity, good luck, and divine blessings. Her name means "She Who Brings", from the Latin verb fero, synonymous with abundance and success.  This seems to have merged with Fortuna, probably originally a Goddess of fertility, into the Goddess called Fors Fortuna, who was acknowledged as sometimes being fickle or wanton and representing Fortune as Goddess of luck or chance.

She was especially worshipped by slaves and commoners, as the Goddess who could bring about rags-to-riches transformations; with at least two dedicated temples in Rome being founded by former slaves in gratitude for their changed luck. It also looks to have been the origin of the phrase Wheel of Fortune.

By keeping traditions, communities in Ancient Britain retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

If you are interested in Ancient Egypt, Joanna Bristow-Watkins (Harmony Healing) is a Reyad Sekh Em® Egyptian Alchemy Healer and Teaching Mentor. August in Britain is school summer holidays. Time for summer camping and outdoor festivals and, our Summer Bank Holiday, this year on Monday 28th August, with typically lots of rain.  As someone with a late August birthday I can testify to rain being very common indeed.

The month of August was renamed by Augustus Caesar, after himself. Under Roman rule it was previous called Sextillia, meaning the 6th month in Latin. When the Gregorian calendar was established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, January became the opening month of the calendar year. To the Anglo-Saxons, August was called Ƿēodmōnaþ meaning ‘weed (or grass) month’.

During August, we have Khemitian (Ancient Egyptian) New Year on 1st - which is also Pagan Lunasa/Lammas(and this year it's Full Moon and a Supermoon too), Lion’s Gate (8th) and the Perseid Meteors (9th - 17th August, peaking 11th/12th). We can also look forward to three other annual Egyptian Festivals plus a selection of Chinese, Buddhist and Hindu Festivals as well as a Roman annual commemoration.

We have two Full Moons and therefore two Full Moon Guided Healing Meditations taking place on 7.30-9.30pm on Tuesday 1st August (Sturgeon Supermoon, Lunasa and Egyptian New Year) and again on Wednesday 30th August (Blue Supermoon). I am also offering an 8:8 Lion's Gate Meditation at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time) on the 8th. This session will be specially themed on the energy portal between Egypt and the UK, angelic connections, plus of course, being the Lion's Gate, it will have a feline twist to it too. Book at the Harmony Shop

As August is holiday season for most people, we have just two Harmony in Nature taster sessions - a 1-hr one and a 2-hr one - on Wednesday 2nd August at Dapdune Wharf, walking distance from Guildford mainline station and town centre.

1st August Khemitian New YearTuesday 1st August is the Ancient Egyptian New year, traditionally marking the start of the Nile flood, started by the tears of Aset (Isis) over the death of Asar (Osirus).

The exact correlation of the Egyptian New year to the modern calendar is disputed, but I favour the linking with the heliacal rising of Sirius (dawn visibility of Sirius) as this star, known to the Egyptians as Sopdet (pronounced Soppday) was closely associated with Aset.

In the Northern Hemisphere, this is also the Pagan Celebration of Lunasa (also known as Lammas), the start of the harvest, season of pregnancy, ripening, transformation and peace.

This marks the height of the northern summer, when the Earth is most alive.

July Thunder Full Moon meditationTuesday 1st August, 7.30-9.30pm UK Time (GMT+1 = UT+1) is our Full Moon Guided Meditationn.

During this session, participants all receive a deeply healing experience. Cost to participate is £20 by online BACS payment (£1 admin fee added for PayPal, concessions to RSE/VFoA graduates), book at the Harmony Shop.

This activity serves as a good taster of Joanna's work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme. And, most importantly, it's a step towards making a difference to the global predicament. To find out how working on your own spiritual consciousness can help humanity and the planet by raising the overall human consciousness levels, see Joanna's You Tube explanation.

Please email  or contact me via Facebook Messenger/What's App to let me know you've booked to make sure I send you the link.

22 August Sturgeon Full MoonTuesday 1st August@ 19:31 is Sturgeon Supermoon. This year it's also Lammas (Lunasa) and Egyptian New Year - see separate entry above. The monthly Full Moon meditation is also tonight, 7.30-9.30pm (UK time). Book in at the Harmony Shop.  If you would like a video guided meditation, but can't make this time, you can purchase our 'any month' pre-recorded Full Moon meditation at this section of the Harmony Shop.

Between this date and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

Angela McGerr's self-guided instructions for a Full Moon Angelic Meditation with Gabriel from her A Harmony of Angels Book. Angela's books have been long out of print, but we do have collectible and signed editions at the Harmony Shop.

Jo at CHCWednesday 2nd August,11.30 - 12.30, 1-hr taster session (£15) and 2-4pm, 2-hr taster session (£25)at Dapdune Wharf, Guildford. the venue has its own National trust carpark, but is also walking distance from Guildford mainline station and the Centre of Guildford.  There are special double ticket prices if you have a friend who would like to attend with you.

Immerse yourself in the healing elements of nature and connect deeply with all your senses.

We will take you on a mini taster session (either for 1 hour in the morning or 2 hours in the afternoon)around the little island linked to Dapdune Wharf itself. Through a selection of simple sensory activities, you will learn how to enhance your perceptions and slow down to focus on what could easily be missed.  We end with a treelaxation. A deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience, and which, despite the title forest bathing, does not involve any swimming!

Some of the scientifically proven benefits of spending time in woodland include reduced stress levels, stronger immune system response, and a stabilised cortisol cycle.

This session which will take place in all weathers except very high winds and/or electrical storms.

Book at Harmony Shop. Please email katieandjo@harmonyinnature.uk to go on our Harmony in Nature monthly update mailing list.

8 August Lions GateTuesday 8th August is The Lion's GateI'm offering an 8:8 Lion's Gate Meditation at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time) on the 8th. This session will be specially themed on the energy portal between Egypt and the UK, angelic connections, plus of course, being the Lion's Gate, it will have a feline twist to it too. Book at the Harmony Shop

August 8th (8:8 in numerology) has always been experienced as the Lions Gate doorway opening up a time portal to ancient Egyptian encodings situated between the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza.

It is said to be an energy doorway, which activates through the Solar Lion into the etheric and the Hall of Records (Akasha) and is said to be associated with the marriage of matter and antimatter, where polarities meet and merge.

Encrypted at sacred sites all over the world, but headquartered at Giza Egypt, these long-established data programmes, communicate with our own inner crystalline codes held in our DNA. By tuning in and connecting with these codings we may be able to access a portal ancient truths and wisdoms resulting in an accelerated spiritual awakening. Book at the Harmony Shop

radiant perseids 4301 earthsky websiteWednesday 9th August – Thursday 17th August may be able to see some Perseid meteors. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak.

The shower's peak usually occurs on August 13th (predawn), this year, with Full Moon 1st August and New Moon 16th August (actually a Micromoon so even better), light pollution is likely to hamper viewings less towards the end of this peak window. However, you may be able to see some meteors any time between 17th July and 24th August. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. Look to the northeast after midnight. For more, see diagram left and earthsky.org website, from where the image has been taken.

11 12 August Peak of the Perseid meteorsSaturday 12th August/Sunday 13th August (see entry under 9th August).

The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus.

Look to the northeast after midnight; with a New Moon which is a Micromoon (so smaller than usual), viewing could be good weather permitting.

    See earthsky.org website for more.

12 August Day of the Light of IsisSaturday 12th August is also the Day of the Light of Aset (Isis). On this day Aset (Isis) is celebrated with all forms of light including sun worship, during the day and candles at night.

Interesting that it is very close to the date of the Roman Festival of Diana (varies 11th-13th August though mostly shown as the 13th), which no doubt was a development from the Egyptian Festival.

Informative Egyptian laminated posters by Jacqui Taliesin El Masry (Alkhemi) are available from this site - see Harmony Shop.

13 August Festival of Diana framedSunday 13th August, in Roman tradition, is the Festival of Diana, being the date upon which King Servius Tullius dedicated her shrine on the Aventine Hill in Rome in the mid-sixth century BCE.

Diana was the hunting goddess, associated with wild animals and woodlands. She later became a moon goddess, supplanting Luna; and the moon was an emblem of chastity.

Oak groves were especially sacred to her. She was praised in poetry for her strength, athletic grace, purity, distinct beauty, and hunting skill.

Despite her virginal status, Diana was also a Goddess of Fertility.

13 15 August Chinese Festival of ObonSunday 13th - Tuesday 15th August is Obon (also known as Bon); a Buddhist festival to honour dead loved ones. This custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday, during which people return to ancestral family locations and visit and tidy their ancestors' graves.

On this day, the spirits of ancestors are believed to revisit the household altars. Celebrated through the lighting of bonfires, sacred meals, paper lanterns and dancing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Interestingly, there are some parallels between the Ancient Egyptian Day of the Light and the modern communities in Japan celebrating Obon through lanterns and bonfires thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.⠀

New Moon green frameWednesday 16th August @ 10:38 is New Moon and it's a Micromoon.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy. There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

New Moon is a good time to work on your Vision Board for the rest of 2023.

18 August Egyptian Feast of WagiFriday 18th August is the Egyptian Feast of Wagy

Taking place seventeen days after the Egyptian celebrations of New Year's Day, there was the more sombre feast of Wagy, when families paid respect to their ancestors.

They came to the tombs of the deceased, with offerings, performing rituals, specifically "fumigations" - producing fumes - smoke. The ceremonies were often followed by a funerary meal.

19 August Egyptian Testival of TehutiSaturday 19th August is the Festival of Tehuti (Thoth) marking the occasion on which Tehuti (Thoth) ordered the healing of the eye of Heru (Horus).

An MP3 Meditation to visit the Akashic Records with Tehuti is available from the MP3 Downloads & CDs section of the Harmony Shop

19 August Tehuti meditation to the Akashic RecordsThis is a meditation to visit your personal Akashic record (which the Egyptians believed were housed in the Halls of Amenti) to see if hidden blockages to your spiritual growth and wellbeing may be revealed at this time.

The totality of the Akashic records are said to contain and describe all knowledge of human experience as well as the history of the cosmos; so they could be described as the DNA of the Universe. This meditation was devised for 19th August or 19th September (both being Festivals of Tehuti) would add emphasis, but can be used anytime.

21 August Roman Festival of ConsualiaMonday 21st August is the Roman Festival of Consualia, to honour Consus, the god of counsel, and the one who protects the harvest, which was in storage at the time of the festival.

Mars, as a protector of the harvest, was also honoured on this day, as were the Lares, the household Gods that individual families held sacred.

During the celebration horses, mules, and assess were exempted from all labour, and were led through the streets adorned with garlands and flowers. Chariot races were held this day in the Circus Maximus, which included an odd race in which chariots were pulled by mules.

August Bank Holiday Nature TrailMonday 28th August is the Summer Bank Holiday in the UK.  In the United Kingdom, most workers have a day off work or school and the banks are closed. In Scotland, however, the Bank Holiday is actually on Monday 7th August.

The Bank Holidays Act of 1871 introduced the August Bank Holiday to give bank clerks and shop people a day of relaxation not connected to holy days such as Christmas.

This has morphed into a three-day weekend before the school summer holidays finish.

If you have children, weather permitting (avoid woodland locations in heavy winds), it's a great day to take them out on a nature trail at a local park, beauty spot, National Trust or woodland location.

22 August Hindu Raksha Bandan FestivalWednesday 30th August is Raksha Bandhan, the Hindu festival honouring the bond between brothers and sisters, celebrated on the day of the Full Moon in August.

Brothers take a vow to protect their sisters, whilst sisters pray for a long long life for their brothers, sealed by tying a thread around their right wrist..

22 August Chinese Hungry Ghost FestivalWednesday 30th August is also the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival.

This is the Buddhist Festival of All Souls or the Festival of Hungry Ghosts, when offerings are made until before the next New Moon (Friday 15th September) to spirits who have not yet found rest.

The Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as the Zhongyuan Festival, takes place on the 15th day of the Ghost Month (which starts at a New moon), so it naturally co-incides with a Full Moon.

July Thunder Full Moon meditationWednesday 30th August, 7.30-9.30pm UK Time (GMT+1 = UT+1) is our Full Moon Unity Consciousness Meditation.

During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. Participants all receive a deeply healing experience.

  • Celestial Forecast for August is ready ...

    July Celestial Forecast Image

August in Britain is school summer holidays. Time for summer camping and outdoor festivals and, our Summer Bank Holiday, this year on Monday 29th August, with typically lots of rain.  As someone with a late August birthday I can testify to rain being very common indeed.

The month of August was renamed by Augustus Caesar, after himself. Under Roman rule it was previous called Sextilllia, meaning the 6th month in Latin. When the Gregorian calendar was established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, January became the opening month of the calendar year. To the Anglo-Saxons, August was called Ƿēodmōnaþ meaning ‘weed (or grass) month’.

During August, we have Khemitian (Ancient Egyptian) New Year on 1st - which is also Pagan Lunasa/Lammas, Lion’s Gate (8th) and the Perseid Meteors (9th - 17th August). We can also look forward to three other annual Egyptian Festivals plus a selection of Chinese, Buddhist and Hindu Festivals as well as a Roman annual commemoration. We have London & Surrey Forest Bathing events on the 7th, 17th, 18th, see dates below for details.  The Full Moon takes place on Friday 12th, with the Sturgeon Supermoon peaking at 02:36 – so the Full Moon Meditation is the night before on Thursday 11th.

See my August Celestial Forecastfor full details.

Through Harmony Healing, Joanna offers a wider spectrum of events designed to nurture your wellbeing.

    Forest Bathing+

Forest Bathing comes from the Japanese term, ‘Shinrin Yoku’, the process of immersing the human spirit under a canopy of trees. It was developed to mitigate the high levels of stress experienced by businessmen in crowded urban environments and combines mindfulness, meditation and gentle exercise within an ambient forest location.

Ancient civilisations frequently venerated nature and gained insight and wisdom from their relationship with the natural world. Despite the fact that society is now more disconnected from the countryside, research supports the physiological benefits of Forest Bathing. Trees emit essential oils known as ‘phytoncides’ which have been proven to evoke relaxation and wellbeing. By immersing ourselves in ancient woodlands, we re-connect with nature and reinforce this relationship with the natural world.

The Forest Bathing Institute (TFBI) has pioneered the addition of enhanced sensory exercises and deep meditations to create Forest Bathing+, which helps promote mindfulness

Our Harmony in Nature Forest Bathing experience involves a slow exploration of woodland through our senses.  Cost is £35 per person for a 3-hour public session.  Rates for private sessions are negotiable.
Forest Bathing has been proven to have ongoing health and wellbeing benefits.  Backed by global evidence-based studies, especially in Japan, Korea, and more recently in the UK, research (relevant study hyperlinked in each case) shows Forest Bathing has the potential to:
We have been piloting some Forest Bathing sessions for the charity sector and we are currently running a 6-week course for Mind, Woking.  Initial feedback five weeks in, is excellent with many health improvements noted amongst participants.
Joanna and Katie feel that with the growth in eco-awareness and the drive for greener businesses there is an opportunity for us as providers with minimal (even positive) environmental impact to be supplying regular wellbeing maintenance sessions to employers/employees including schools and teachers.  As Forest Bathing becomes more accepted within the NHS and charity sectors this can only help.

Jo at NCJoanna's interest in Forest Bathing

Joanna grew up in an area dense with ancient woodland, and had the freedom to roam. Much of her childhood was spent playing in those woods with her sister, Fiona, largely unsupervised by adults.

She feels their childish enthusiasm encouraged a love of nature, animals, and woodlands, which laid the foundations for much of her subsequent interests and work.

Have spent 15 years + in senior management specialising in customer care and training, she was suddenly driven by a desire for inner peace and became interested in Ancient Egyptian philosophies and natural healing techniques.

Forest Bathing+ felt like a natural progression. She trained with, and is fully certified, by the Forest Bathing Institute (TFBI), who initiate ground-breaking research on its physiological, immunological, emotional and mental health benefits.

Image shows Katie (left) and Joanna (Right) in Newlands Corner, Guildford.

    Katie's interest in Forest Bathing

From a young age Katie spent multiple family holidays walking, youth hostelling and being outdoors whatever the weather, particularly in the Lake District and North Yorkshire Moors, so Katie feels right at home with Forest Bathing.

She has been on two survival courses, and loves learning which wild foods we can forage. She’s been self-employed for much of her working life, so she can do a mix of what she enjoys, which has included editing and dance instructing.

One of the most important things to her is managing her and her family’s health care with natural therapies, enabling them to be mainly independent of the mainstream. She advocates always doing your own research. The key components of her approach to health are nutrition, essential oils, homeopathy and walking amongst greenery; with visits to other practitioners as necessary.

Nature Therapy and Forest Bathing+ Sessions

Forest Bathing + can take place in multiple locations, but most of my sessions take place at Newlands Corner or in the grounds of the Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary, close to the picturesque village of Shere, near Guildford in Surrey.

This Sanctuary focuses on Energy Healing which completely aligns with Forest Bathing+. All sessions take place in ancient woodlands and I will gently take you through a number of mindfulness-based sensory exercises and meditations that will enhance your appreciation of nature through all your senses.

Having spent over two decades working with healing energy (my company, Harmony Healing, was founded in 1999) the importance of nature in health and wellbeing is obvious. I can also run themed sessions incorporating nature angels, which may give you a useful introduction towards spiritual mentoring and expansion, RSE® Egyptian alchemy healing and practitioner training.

Garden Therapy sessions are also available for private and corporate bookings, either in your own garden (if suitable) or in a beautiful garden setting in Surrey.

Contact me for group and corporate Forest Bathing+ and Nature Therapy sessions. Blog updates, with seasonal activities, are emailed out to Harmony Healing subscribers.

Whilst undertaking the mindfulness sensory exercises during the session, participants will be asked to refrain from talking to each other (and avoid other distractions such as mobile phone use) so that all participants can gain the full benefits from the surroundings. Do come along with a friend provided they are keen to adopt the rules (and not seeing it a general catch-up). Please contact me on  with queries.

DOGS: Regrettably we cannot accept dogs on our Forest Bathing+ sessions unless they are trained Guide Dogs.

INCLEMENT WEATHER: We operate in all weathers (we just request that you wear appropriate clothing) except winds exceeding 30mph due to safety reasons.

Private Forest Bathing Sessions are available.

  • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 1 - The Awakening Forest

Shaft of Light in the Winter Woodland

What an incredible week, with storm after storm, leaving a trail of disaster in roads and woodlands all over the UK. As I type this, we still have heavy gusts from Storm Franklyn and it's become a common site to see fallen trees, sadly cut and piled up by the side of the road.

As March approaches, we can look forward to extended daylight and the awakening of the forest with new growth at ground level as well as on the trees. And even where trees have fallen this last week, it will be amazing to observe the speed with which new saplings wll appear to fill the spaces.

Our friend and fellow Forest Bathing Guide, Lisa Duncan, has written an excellent guest journal entry on Forest Bathing for a wonderful UK based organisation called the Naked Pharmacy who offer amazing natural remedies made to pharmaceutical specifications. To read it, head over to the Naked Pharmacy Blog.

  • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 10 - November & Slowing Down

    Autumn view square

November in Britain, with the clocks having gone back, features darker, colder nights, but is peppered with the explosive lights, sounds and smells of bonfires and fireworks, as Guy Fawkes Night (following Diwali, usually in October) is celebrated. Many animals, such as the hedgehog, start to hibernate for the winter.  Sometimes we humans feel like hibernating too, and in times past we would naturally have made changes to our daily lives. The magic touch of frost on the winter landscape can be utterly charming and provide a different kind of light.

This year in the UK, autumn has felt mild, and there’s still plenty of greenery about, along with the traditional colours of purple, brown, red and golden yellow, which will mostly be shed this month. Seed heads from 'old man's beard' in the hedgerows look magical as they catch the low sunlight and the morning dew. Seasonal in the kitchen this month we have Jerusalem artichokes, leeks, carrots, beetroots, parsnips, Brussels sprouts, kale, potatoes and winter squash  It remains good for harvesting chestnuts, hazelnuts and walnuts (particularly prolific this year) plus late-fruiting apples and pears, with a plethora of fungi, for those who know the edible from the ones best avoided.

The month of November was named after 'novem' meaning 9th in Latin, as November was the 9th month when the year started in March. To the Anglo-Saxons, November was called Blotmoneth, meaning “blood month” as this was traditionally the month of slaughtering and preserving meat to last through the winter.  It was also a month of feasting, as all the meat cuts which couldn’t be preserved were cooked up, making it a bountiful month, and helping folks keep warm.

During November, as well as Guy Fawkes Night, we can also look forward to the British Celtic Festival (specifically Irish, apparently) of Samhain (Celtic New Year = 1st November), which was a feast spread across three days, including bonfires representing the sun, and marking the start of the dark or winter period of the year, or Samonios. While Samhain marks the end of harvest and nature dying back, nature needs rest and renewal time, ready to burst out again in spring. For us, it is about nurturing ourselves, completing projects, and thinking about which aspects we want to bring forth in spring.

Joanna's Full Moon Meditation takes place 7.30-9.30pm (UK time) on Tuesday 8thwith the Beaver Moon peaking at 11:02. We also have the Leonid Meteor Shower peaking 17th/18th. We have Forest Bathing vouchers available as Christmas gifts.

Harmony in Nature Forest Bathing Events in Surrey/London

Despite the title, forest ‘bathing’ only involves water if it rains. We will be immersing ourselves in the woodland atmosphere, taking our senses for a meander among trees. You will learn how to enhance your perceptions and slow down, through the therapeutic benefits of guided mindful sensory activities with fellow nature lovers, becoming aware of what could easily be missed. We end with a ‘treelaxation’and aim to leave you feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated.

Forest Bathing is an evidence-based wellbeing activity. Spending time in woodland has been shown to potentially boost our immune system for 2-4 weeks, balance blood pressure, reduce blood sugars, stress and cortisol levels, amongst other benefits. Participants may feel a reduction in anxiety, depression or rumination, and an improvement in concentration, memory and creativity afterwards, as well as improved sleep.

  • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 2 - Spring Equinox & International Day of Forests

Shaft of Light in the Winter Woodland

The month of March was named after the Roman God of War, Mars. The Roman Calendar originally strated in March. To the Anglo-Saxons, March was called 'Hrēðmonath', named after a pagan fertility Goddess called 'Hreða' (also known as Rheda).

On 20th March, we have the Spring Equinox at 15:32. On the Equinox, light and dark are equal over the whole world: mark the moment of the Equinox with silence and stillness. Representing balance of opposites; it's a good time to bring balance into your life.

On 21st March, we have the International Day of Forests, and to mark this occasion we are offering a Tree Connection Workshop, featuring a 2-hour Forest Bathing session, plus an indoor workshop featuring some of our local trees and how to connect further via teas, tree essences and essential oils. See below for details.

We have North Surrey & London Forest Bathing events scheduled this month on the 16th (Cannon Hill Common, London SW20), 20th (Harry Edwards, Shere, Surrey), 21st (International Day of Forests Tree Connection Workshop, Shere, Surrey) and 31st March (Horsell Common, Woking, Surrey). See below for more about each event.

  • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 3 - Easter & Bluebells

Shaft of Light in the Winter Woodland

As we progress into April, a theme emerges which venerates spring, renewal and fertility as well as nourishment. Known for April Fool’s Day and April Showers, the month often hosts Easter, as it does this year. In the forest, we start to see (and smell) the beautiful bluebells, a marker of ancient woodland, which reach their full splendour in May.

The month of April was supposedly named after the Roman Goddess Venus (leading to Her Veneralia festival on 1st April), originally named Aphrilis after her equivalent Greek Goddess Aphrodite (Aphros) or the Etruscan version Apru. To the Anglo-Saxons, April was called Easter-mōnaþ "Easter Month", "Month of the Goddess Ēostre".  No prizes for guessing which Christian Festival took its name from this annual festival.

We're taking a break for Easter, so this month we only have one public forest bathing session, £35, 11-2, on the 24th April (Harry Edwards, Shere, Surrey), where we may be lucky to encounter some early bluebells of which there are thousands here; this lovely venue becomes stunning when they are in bloom.

I am delighted to announce that the talented Vanessa Potter has completed Series 3 of her Finding Your Right Mind Podcasts all about ParkBathe: Nature's de-stress revolution. The series highlights the benefits of immersing ourselves in woodland and features interviews with many experts on Forest Bathing, including Joanna.

Next month, we have Mental Health Awarenesss week 9th-15th May, when we will offer two public sessions on Monday 9th, 11-1.30, £35, at Cannon Hill Common (London SW20) and on Sunday 15th we are offering our first full-day themed on nature angels at Harry Edwards, Shere.  The morning is an indoor nature angel workshop (£50) and the afternoon is a nature angel themed bluebell forest bathing session in the private grounds (£40), or special all-day price of £77.

For those wanting a mainstream Bluebell Forest Bathing Session (without the Nature Angel theme) at Harry Edwards, we have one, 11-2 on Sunday 22nd May, £35.

Also during Mental Health Awareness Week, we are launching a 6-week Forest Bathing series for the local branch of the mental health charity Mind, with Katie and myself as the guides. This has been co-ordinated by The Forest Bathing Institute (TFBI) who have worked tirelessly to introduce Forest bathing as an acceptable evidence-based therapy to the NHS and the charity sector. A similar 6-week series has already started for another charity, guided my one of our colleagues. The launch of these charity programmes is a momentous development.

We can hire our venues at Cannon Hill Common (SW20), Horsell Common (Woking GU21) and Harry Edwards (Surrey Hills near Shere) for forest bathing use for private groups, enquire for details. See below for more about our public events

    Surrey/London Forest Bathing Events

Through a selection of simple sensory activities, you will learn how to enhance your perceptions and slow down to focus on what could easily be missed. We end with a treelaxtion;  a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience, and which, despite the title forest bathing, does not involve any swimming!

Some of the scientifically proven benefits of spending time in woodland include reduced stress levels, stronger immune system response, and a stabilised cortisol cycle.

Our  sessions take place in all weathers except 25+mph winds or electrical storms.

? ☕When we have the right clothing and footwear, usually plenty of layers, and a spare, we can happily stay outdoors for hours. Even longer if we take a hot drink and a snack!

  • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 4 - May Celebrations + Mental Health Awareness week

square insta bluebell at HE 22MayMay is a month when our Pagan heritage breaks through into parochial folklore.

May Day, also known as Beltane, is a Pagan Festival still celebrated in parishes across the country featuring elaborate traditions involving May Poles, floral-dressed girls bedecked with flower garlands, Morris Dancers, Green Man imagery, hobby horses etc.

We usher in the promise of sunshine and summer as we welcome green shoots and abundant blossom everywhere, not least the Mayflower (Hawthorn) associated with the old adage, ne'er cast a clout till May be out (which I always assumed meant the month itself)...

The month could be named after Maia, a Greek Goddess linked with the land, fertility and growth. To the Anglo-Saxons, it was called Thrimilci, the month when cows could be milked three times a day due to constant grazing on abundant new grass.

Mental health awareness week 2022This month we have Mental Health Awarenesss week 9th-15th May, when we will offer two public sessions on Monday 9th, 11-1.30, £35, at Cannon Hill Common (London SW20) and on Sunday 15th we are offering our first full-day themed on nature angels at Harry Edwards, Shere. • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 5 - June & Summer Solstice

square insta bluebell at HE 22May

June is British summertime. The roses bloom, imprinting their perfumed scent into the extended evenings leading to the Solstice on the 21st. Garden flowers and hedgerows are splendidly colourful and summer berries are abundant. Seasons are topsy turvey with the elderflower, usually a May blossom, in full bloom as June begins. After two crazy years, we will relish the picnic season with strawberries & ice-cream plus elderflower cordial; despite optimism versus realism whilst planning for both rain and/or sunburn risk.

The month could be named after Juno, the Roman Goddess linked with marriage. To the Anglo-Saxons, it was called sera monath (dry month), which is not necessarily our modern-day experience.

In UK, on 21st June, we have the Summer Solstice marking the turning point of the year, after which days start to get shorter again. We have just completed Week 5 of a 6-week course for the charity'Mind' (in Woking) and we are delighted with the results which are also being studied by Derby University. We have a Surrey Forest Bathing event on Saturday 25th at the private woodlands in the grounds of the Harry Edward's Healing Sanctuary (Burrows Lea, near Shere, Surrey).

We can hire our venues at Cannon Hill Common (SW20), Horsell Common (Woking GU21) and Harry Edwards (Surrey Hills near Shere) for forest bathing use for private groups, enquire for details. Next month, we hope to start offering monthly sessions at the Kosmon sanctuary in Tadworth. See below for more about our forthcoming public events.

  • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 6 - July & Lavender

    square insta lavender

July is the height of British summertime. Time for the orchids, delphiniums, dahlias, hydrangeas, irises and sunflowers to bloom, and the lingering perfumed scent of lavender, roses, honeysuckle, gardenias and jasmine on the night air. Traditionally, here in the UK, July features the Wimbledon Championship tennis finals and Henley Regatta.

The month of July was renamed to honour Julius Caesar, who was born in this month. Under Roman rule it was previous called Quintilis, meaning the 5th month in Latin. This was before January became the opening month of the calendar year, when the Gregorian calendar was established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. To the Anglo-Saxons, it was called Æftera Līþa (after midsummer).

Katie and I will be at the Sun & Moon Festival (Merrist Wood, Guildford), where we will be offering a selection of workshops and three Forest Bathing Taster Sessions.

We have Surrey Forest Bathing events on Thursday 7th July at Cannon Hill (London SW20)Sunday 10th at Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary(near Shere, Surrey) and the Kosmon Sanctuary (Tadworth, near Epsom, Surrey) on Tuesday 12th July. • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 7 - August & Summer Outdoor Festivals

August in Britain is school summer holidays. Time for summer camping, sunshine and outdoor festivals and, our Summer Bank Holiday, this year on Monday 29th August, with typically lots of rain.

WhatsApp Image 2022 08 08 at 8.25.35 PM 1Katie and I started the month at the Sun & Moon Festival (Merrist Wood, Guildford), where we offered a selection of workshops and three Forest Bathing Taster Sessions. We had 39 at one of the Taster sessions!

The Sun & Moon festival itself was absolutely amazing and we'll definitely be back next year; 1st - 8th August, put the dates in your 2023 diary now.

We have full Surrey Forest Bathing events on Wednesday 17th August at Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary(near Shere, Surrey) and the Kosmon Sanctuary (Tadworth, near Epsom, Surrey) on Thursday 18th August The Full Moon Guided Healing Meditation is taking place on Thursday 11th, the night before the Sturgeon Supermoon which reaches its peak @ 02:36 (Thursday night/Friday morning).

Last month, Joanna visited the Hampton Court Flower Show Forest Bathing Show Garden, see Katie's article below, and under that, our forthcoming Forest Bathing events.

Recreating a sense of the forest in a small garden – RHS Forest Bathing Garden, Hampton Court Flower Show, Designed by Dave Green, who kindly supplied the graphics.

When the Duchess of Cambridge was involved in creating a forest bathing-inspired garden for the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show, there was a sigh of relief within The Forest Bathing Institute where we trained, and the hard work of previous years, trying to interest the NHS, Universities and the media in forest bathing and get some coverage of its many benefits to human health and wellbeing, started to pay off.

HamptonCourt1 Forest BathingThree years on, and garden designer Dave Green created the ‘RHS forest bathing garden’ for the Hampton Court Flower Show last month. He first experienced forest bathing during studies in Japan in 2016, and clearly understands the concept, describing it in the July 2022 edition of ‘Pro Landscaper’ magazine:

Most of the time, forest bathing is a guided practice, with a practitioner getting you to undertake activities to engage with where you are. A forest is really good with that, because it has different sights, sounds, textures and smells – all of which can help your senses to focus on where you are at the present time.’

HamptonCourt2 Forest BathingTo recreate the protective sense of forest immersion in a small patch of busy showground, he used mounds on either side of the path to shield wanderers from the busy world beyond, planting a mix of ferns, native UK woodland plants and some Japanese ones, as well as some large trees and shrubs to provide a sense of tree canopy. The different textures of landscaping, including plants, wood and stone are all part of the sensory experience.

During a conversation with Joanna, he described creating the winding path to slow down the pace of those walking the route, and seems to have covered many aspects of the woodland experience, although to supply ambient sounds and smells required modern technology! In the light of the fact that his forest bathing garden was minus a practitioner, we have offered our services for the future, so watch this space.

  • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 8 - September & Harvest

September FB newsletter Issue 8September in Britain is back to school after the summer holidays. It's the month of harvest, blackberries abound on the bramble bushes and apples are plentiful on the trees, conkers and chestnuts are starting to ripen.

The month of September was named after 'septimus' meaning the 7th month in Latin. September was the 7th month when the year started in MarchTo the Anglo-Saxons, September was called Hālig-mōnaþmeaningHoly Month.

During September, we have the Equinox on 23rd, when night and day are equal length across the globe. It's a good day to focus on harmony and balance.

This year we will be running one-hour taster Forest Bathing sessions at the Surrey Hills Wood Fair in Cranleigh on the 10th/11th September weekend (see below for full details). We have full Forest Bathing events on the 13th (Tadworth/Epsom), 17th (Shere), 29th (London SW20). • Forest Bathing Update 2022, Issue 9 - October & Halloween

Autumn view squareOctober in Britain features the full splendour of autumn colours with an array of brown, red and golden yellow mixed with the remaining green as trees shed their leaves. Nature is truly remarkable; this process eliminates environmental toxins which have collected, and trees do it to protect themselves. In winter sunshine, water would continue to evaporate from the leaves, and should the ground water freeze, the tree's water supply would no longer be guaranteed. Hence the plant produces phytohormones and directs them to its leaf stalks. These hormones cause a corky layer to form, then the leaves fall off. This cork prevents pathogens such as fungi or bacteria from penetrating. Furthermore, without leaves, should it snow, the tree will not have to bear the additional weight of snow on the leaf surfaces, and wind will pass through with less likelihood of damage.

This month is the ideal time to harvest chestnuts, conkers and apples and on the allotments we have many seasonal vegetables including broccoli, leeks, turnips, potatoes, kale, plus of course squashessuch aspumpkin. The month provides plentiful supplies forapple bobbing and pumpkin carving, which became associated with Halloween, celebrated on the 31st. We also have two separate sets of Meteor Showers, the Draconids (peaks 8th/9th) and the Orionids (peaks 20th/21st).

The month of October was named after 'octo' meaning 8th in Latin, as October was the 8th month when the year started in March. To the Anglo-Saxons, October was called Winterfylleth, or the “winter full moon,” because winter was said to begin on the first full moon in October.

Harmony in Nature Forest Bathing Events in Surrey/London

Despite the title, forest ‘bathing’ only involves water if it rains! We will be immersing ourselves in the woodland atmosphere, taking our senses for a meander among trees, and you will learn how to enhance your perceptions and slow down to focus on what could easily be missed. We end with a ‘treelaxation’, and aim to leave you feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated.

Forest Bathing is an evidence-based wellbeing activity. Spending time in woodland has been shown to boost our immune system for 2-4 weeks, balance blood pressure, reduce stress and cortisol levels, blood sugars, anxiety and rumination, as well as improve sleep, memory, concentration and creativity.

Our first October event is Jo’s talk on Wednesday 5th at the Guildford Institute, where you can join in person or online for £5. Forest Bathing: Finding Harmony In Nature. Bookings via Guildford Institute Website.

We have nature connection forest bathing events on Sunday 9th (Shere), which can be extended to whole day, below, Thursday 20th (London SW20) and Wednesday 26th (Tadworth).

Surrey Hills Wood Fair, Cranleigh, 10th & 11th September

We have to mention this event, as over 7,000 wood enthusiasts came through the gates, and it was a pleasure to meet so many new people attracted to the event through woodlands, activities in woods, or the beauty of wood as a material.  Joining up with Lisa of Hinoki Forest Bathing, the two-day event kept us busy, and we ran some sessions for adults and one family session, which went down well. We’ll definitely be returning next year.

Great Big Green Week, 24th Sept - 2nd Oct

Last year 5,000 sessions took place during the week, making it the UK’s biggest ever nature and climate event.  Events take place outside around the country and online, so you’ll find a wide variety of events to join in with. A flavour of events near us:

    • a recycling clothing event, to avoid the obscene amount of clothing which finds its way to landfill each year
    • an eco-fayre, with ways to rethink, re-use, re-purpose, repair, refill…
    • an introduction to mindfulness
    • a quiet track bike ride
    • a community feast with leftovers from food businesses to avoid waste
    • a bat walk

    …you get the picture.

Bastille day logoFriday 14th July is Bastille Day;a national holiday in France.

This commemorates a mob of Frenchmen, rebelling against the rule of their king, who stormed a prison to obtain weapons and free prisoners. It sparked the French Revolution in 1789.

Bastille Day is the name given in English-speaking countries to the national day of France, celebrated on 14th July every year. Its formal name, in French, is Fête nationale (pronounced [fɛt nɑsjɔnal] meaning National Celebration and le 14 juillet (translating from the French as "the 14th of July") is the legal title of the occasion.

The French National Day is the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille Castle on 14th July 1789, a key event of the French Revolution. The Fête de la Fédération also celebrates the unity of the French people on 14th July 1790.

Celebrations are held all over France. One of "the oldest and largest military parade in Europe" is held on 14th July on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in front of the President of the Republic, plus other French officials and foreign guests.

By keeping traditions and celebrating national festivals, communities retain a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

  • Friday 14th May, Panegyric of Isis (Aset) Egyptian Celebration & Secondary 555 numerology

Panegyric of IsisFriday 14th May is the Panegyric of Isis (Aset) Egyptian Celebration, when Asar (Osiris) was found and Aset (Isis) duly celebrated. Offerings of bread, wine and milk are made and Auset is traditionally praised for her gifts.

It is a time for celebrating successful quests in life. From Isadorus, Hymn III:

O Isis, the Great, God's mother, Lady of Philae,
    God's Wife, God's Adorer, and God's Hand,
God's mother and Great Royal Spouse,
Adornment and Lady of the Ornaments of the Palace.

Lady and desire of the Green Fields,
Nursling who fills the palace with her beauty,
Fragrance of the palace, mistress of joy,
Who completes her course in the Divine Place.

Rain-cloud that makes green the fields when it descends,
Maiden, sweet of love, Lady of Upper and Lower Egypt,
Who issues orders among the divine Ennead,
According to whose command one rules.

Princess, great of praise, lady of charm,
Whose face enjoys the trickling of fresh myrrh.

  • Friday 15th September, New Moon @ 02:35 (Thursday night/Friday morning) - time for abundance ritual

7 Sep New MoonFriday 15th September (Thursday night/Frirday morning) @ 02:35 is the New Moon.

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing balance and wellbeing into our lives.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon.

It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy.

There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

Any New Moon is a fabulous day for creating a personal or corporate Vision Board.

Gardening by the moon has been practised for eons. It's not about planting at night, it's about being in harmony with the natural growth patterns of plants.

The moon progresses through four ‘phases’ or ‘quarters’ , each of which lasts about 7 days. Starting with the New Moon (today), the moon waxes (grows larger) and more visible.

There is a daily increase in light until the Full Moon is visible. After Full Moon, the light wanes (reduces) gradually back until New Moon, completing the lunar cycle. In the same way that the moon influences the rise and fall of the tides, it has gravitational impact on the moisture in plants (sap), the soil and water table. These effects are aligned with the lunar cycle.

For sowing and harvesting, we need to be in harmony with the flow of moisture as it is drawn up the plant into the stem and leaves, fruit and seeds. Or down into the root zone with the gravitational pull of the moon for root vegetables. New Moon is not a good time to plant in your garden.

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing balance and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Friday 16th June, Egyptian Festival of Leyleten-Nuktah, Night of the Tear Drop

16th June Leyleten NuktahFriday 16th June is the Ancient Egyptian Festival, known as Leyleten-Nuktah, the Night of the Tear Drop. A miraculous tear-drop as Aset (Isis) began the mourning of her brother/husband Asar (Osirus), was believed to fall into the Nile causing it to rise and bring new life to the land. The date is actually the 11th day of the Ancient Egyptian month of Ba-oo-neh, so some confusion arises when trying to convert this to our Gregorian calendar, but most settle on or around 16th June.

Posters of Aset (Isis) and other Egyptian Deities, by Jacqui Taliesin El Masry are available from Harmony Healing Shop.

16th  June – Night of the Teardrop (Festival ofLeylet-en-Nuktah)

The ancient land of Khemit (Egypt) was incredibly fertile due to the silt deposited by the River Nile.  Many rivers flow north to south and flood in the winter months when the mountain snow melts at the source.

The Nile River was always the backbone of Khemitian life. The mighty river flows northwards for some 4,000 miles from the mountains of Equatorial Africa (Blue Nile) and Lake Victoria (White Nile) before it empties into the Mediterranean Sea via the Nile Delta. The development of the Khemitian civilization could not have happened were it not for the Nile, as it is the only significant source of water in this desert region. It would flood annually in the summer months, depositing tons of nutrient-rich sediment; when the waters receded the silt would stay behind, fertilizing the land, enabling rich agricultural production.

Nilometers were used to record how high the Nile was during the year.  Nilometers, which were marked staircases build down into the Nile, were placed at strategic points so the Khemitians could monitor the changes in the water level.

If flooding was too heavy, local villages would be washed away. Minimal flooding or no flood at all would mean famine. A successful harvest depended on the flood levels being exactly right.

Since the Khemitian lifestyle revolved around the Deities (Neteru), the great ‘inundation’ when the Nile flooded was attributed to Aset’s tears over the death of her beloved Ausar.  Records indicate that in the days of Ancient Khemit, this flooding probably occurred around the middle of June which then coincided with the heliacal rising of Sirius, a star that they associated with Aset and an astronomical event which could have been easily pinpointed.

The Khemitians called it, Night of a Teardrop.  On this night, (June 16th) when the moon rose high in its sky, Aset shed blessed and mournful tears for her beloved, Ausar. The precious tears were then collected causing the Nile to bring forth its annual flood. Even in Aset’s pain, something divine came forth.

Bring me the milk of Aset, the flood of Nebt-Het, the overspill of the lake, the surge of the sea, life, prosperity, health, happiness, bread, beer...
