  • Saturday 3rd October, Jewish Festival of Sukkot

Saturday 3rd October* is also the start of Sukkot, the Jewish feast of the Tabernacles, it celebrates the harvest and the preservation of the Israelites in the wilderness and occurs on the 15th day of the month of Tishri. The holiday lasts a week, with the first and last days being public holidays in Israel.

Sukkot commemorates the many years that the Jews spent in the desert after the exodus from Egypt and before reaching the Promised Land. The festival specifically gives thanks for the protection, received from their God, whilst in the desert.

The Hebrew word sukkot translates as huts or booths.  Hence, Jewish families may celebrate the festival by building a hut and living in it during the holiday. This hut should have a roof of leaves and bran, and from inside the sky should be visible, so they tend to be temporary and generally quite flimsy.

During Sukkot, a ritual may be observed by taking four different types of plant: a palm branch, an etrog ( citrus fruit), a willow and a myrtle branch and wave them about in celebration.

*Like other Jewish holidays, Sukkot begins at sundown of the night beforehand. Thus all holiday observances begin at nghtfall and this festival ends at nightfall on Friday 9th October. Resource: officeholidays.com.

  • Sunday 24th September, Jewish Holy Day of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)

Sunday 24th September [2023] is Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) which is the Jewish day of repentance, probably the holiest and most solemn day of the year. In Israel, it is an annual holiday. There's no public transport, no form of media communication, and all businesses and shops are closed.

It takes place on the tenth day* of Tishrei, the seventh month. In the Western Calender, this means it will occur between 14th September and 14th October.

Yom Kippur commemorates the date Moses returned from Mount Sinai following forty-days of praying for the sins of the Israelites to be forgiven for worshipping the Golden Calf. On his return from Mount Sinai, the Israelites were granted atonement. Image of The Adoration of the Golden Calf is from the Hortus deliciarum of Herrad of Landsberg (12th century).

Jewish holy days begin at sundown of the night beforehand. Thus all holiday observances begin with fasting and recitation of Kol Nidre before sundown 4th October. This is called tosephet Yom Kippur, (fasting for some of the previous day is required by Jewish law), and ends after sunset the following day.

The central premise of Yom Kippur is atonement and reconciliation. It's customary to wear white as a symbol of purity.

Yom Kippur as a complete day of rest. Therefore, these five traditions are observed:

    1. No eating and drinking
    2. No wearing of leather shoes
    3. No bathing or washing
    4. No anointing oneself with perfumes or lotions
    5. No marital relations

It is believed that this action will return the body to its original state. All healthy men over 13 years or women over 12 years are expected participate.

Yom Kippur marks the end of ten Days of Awe(a penitential period) which starts with Rosh Hashanah; the season of repentance and prayer. On Rosh Hashanah, Jewish tradition believes that everyone's fate for the coming year will be inscribed by God into the Book of Life, and on Yom Kippur, the verdict is sealed.

A traditional Yom Kippur greeting is G’mar Hatimah Tovah (may you be sealed for a good year of life).  Resource: officeholidays.com

  • Thursday 7th - Friday 15th December, Jewish Festival of Hanukkah (aka Chanukah)

28 Nov HannukahThursday 7th - Friday 15th December, Jewish Festival of Hanukkah (aka Chanukah).

The Jewish festival of lights, called Hanukkah (also known as Chanukah), is a holiday dating back thousands of years.

In 175 B.C., King Antiochus, whose ancient kingdom included Judea (located in present-day Israel), made it against the law for people who lived there to practice Judaism. When they refused, he ordered his troops to destroy the Temple of Jerusalem.

The Jews, led by Judah the Maccabee, fought a long rebellion, and finally defeated King Antiochus in 164 B.C.

When the Maccabees returned to their ransacked temple, they reputedly found only one jar of oil—just enough to light the temple’s candles for one day. But according to the Talmud, one of Judaism’s holy texts, the oil miraculously burned for eight days.

In present time, Hanukkah starts on the 25th day of Kislev, the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar, which is lunar based, hence the holiday moves from hear-to-year but starts in late November to mid-December.

In 2023, Hanukkah starts the evening of 7th December and ends on 15th December. To celebrate, a menorah is used, which holds nine candles - one for each of the eight nights - plus a candle called the shamash used to light the other candles.
