  • Saturday 20th January, St Agnes Eve

Canva image of St Agnes Eve

Saturday 20th January is St Agnes Eve; a night for meaningful and deep dreams.

In Christian tradition, St Agnes appeared to her parents in a dream the night after she was martyred.

Through their belief in St Agnes being able to infiltrate meaningful dreams, Christians believed that it would help their wellbeing.

Many cultures believe that dreams pass a message from the subconscious into the conscious mind, often bringing innovative solutions to issues which have been underlying for some time.

Exploring the subconscious connection with the soul is an essential component of harmony and wellbeing in life.

Aligning ourselves with community celebrations is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Through Harmony Healing, Joanna offers a wider spectrum of events designed to nurture your welbeing. If you are looking for regular spiritually enlightening activities which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have our monthly Full Moon Guided Healing Meditations. The next one is Thursday 25th January at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT). Participants all receive a deeply healing experience. Cost to participate is £20 by online BACS payment (small admin fee added for PayPal) or half price to RSE graduates. There are multi-buy packages for regular attendees. Book at the Harmony Shop.

  • Saturday 20th March, Equinox & Egyptian Festival of Pelusia

Pagan EquinoxSaturday 20th March is the Pagan Vernal Equinox at 09.37.

The Equinox is a time when light and dark are equal over the whole world. It's good to mark the moment with silence and stillness.

On this day the sun rises exactly at due East and sets at due West. This fact makes it a good day for finding due east and due west from your favourite site for watching the night sky. Simply go outside around sunset or sunrise and notice the exact location of the sun on the horizon with respect to familiar landmarks. See Earthsky Websitefor more.

In the UK and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, this is the Spring Equinox, in the Southern Hemisphere it's the Autumn Equinox.

Representing balance of opposites, symbolically it's a great time to bring harmony and balance into your life.

An Equilibrium Attunement is also available each year for £55 around 20th March and 22nd September (or whenever are the annual dates of Equinox).  It's also available as a group attunement as part of the Mindful Chakra Course (£66) which is currently mid-programme. The attunement is to balance the masculine/feminine polarities via connection with the Sun and Moon personified as Raphael and Gabriel (Essene Angelology) or Ra and Tehuti (Thoth) in Egyptian Philosophies. I add an additional connection to that of our planet Earth as well as the constellations. Interestingly, the planetary symbol for Earth is the same as the symbol for the angel Melchisadec, therefore bringing an alignment to Melchisadec energy for those who feel a connection. For the March Equinox, I include the zodiac symbols of Pisces (Angel = Barakiel) and Aries (Angel = Machidiel) as this is right on the cusp (changeover is 20th/21st March). For the September Equinox, I include the Zodiac symbols of Virgo and Libra. Email for details.

Here is Joanna's Equinox/Pelusia video, featuring the below Equinox Meditation with Phuel, which has recently been uploaded to YouTube:

It's been on Facebook since the live recording three years ago - when the Equinox was also on 20th March coinciding with Pelusia.

PhuelHere is an Angela McGerr Angelic Meditation with Barakiel (the ruler of Pisces) and Phuel (guardian angel of water) which could be conducted for the Equinox

The Zodiac Sign of Pisces is ruled by Neptune and is of course a Water Sign.

This Equinox day (final day of the Sign) gives you an opportunity to use the healing powers of Barakiel, Ruler of Pisces, and Phuel, Angel Ruler of Neptune, who is also Lord of Waters and Powers of the Moon.

See image of Phuel (right) by Richard Rockwood, taken from Angela's Harmony Angel Cards, last few copies available from our Harmony Shop (as it's now out of print).

Try this exercise with these two mighty Angels. Use it to heal, wash away emotional turbulence and hurt, for heart and thymus to re-expand.

    • You could do this exercise while in the bath, or just swimming, or if this is impossible just use your imagination.
    • Sit quietly and focus your attention within, thinking about your desire to calm your emotions.  Say Barakiel’s and Phuel's names three times to invite them in.
    • If you have an aquamarine (one of Phuel's crystals), hold this in your left hand and it will be programmed with healing during this exercise.
    • Start taking deep breaths of blue green energy, breathing them right down through your body.
    • Imagine you are walking in a beautiful place of nature.
    • Presently you come to a pool of crystal clear water, reflecting a blue sky.
    • Know that with the power of water energy your spirit can go down into this water to be healed and washed clean of emotional turbulence.
    • Imagine that you can step into the water and float in it.
    • If you wish to you can merge for a short time with the water itself, becoming the medium that nourishes fish and other water creatures.
    • The water is very still, silken in texture and peaceful.
    • The sun shines into its depths, lighting the grains of sand at the bottom.
    • Let go of your cares; they are washed away by the healing power of water.
    • When you feel relaxed, come out of the water (real or imaginary)
    • Ask Phuel to seal in your emotional healing, and seal your crystal with silver and aquamarine rays; remember to thank him and Barakiel for their assistance.

By keeping aligned with the movements of our planet, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance into their lives. Harmony Healing activities are aimed at bringing harmony and wellbeing into your life. We have our next Full Moon Unity Consciousness virtual group meditation on Sunday 28th March (£22) and our New Moon New Vision lunar cycle alignment programme starts again on 12th April and will take in Beltane plus the 555 numerology (5 means expansion) of the 5th May.

Isis JTEMSaturday 20th March is also Egyptian Festival of Pelusia, with the Egyptian Goddess Isis (Aset) working her spring magic to ensure the flooding of the Nile later in the year, thereby guaranteeing a fruitful harvest. See Joanna's live Facebook Pelusia/Facebook video.

Image of Isis (left), was created for Harmony Healing by Antonia Skelton. We do have wonderfully informative Egyptian Deity Posters, by Jacqui Taliesin El Masry, available for sale from the Harmony Shop.

According to findwords.info, in the Roman Empire, the Pelusia was a religious festival held on the 20th March to honour Isis (known as Aset to the indigenous Egyptians) and her child Harpocrates (known to the Egyptians as Heru and later called Horus by the Greeks). It would have coincided with the second day of the Quinquatria, the five-day festival dedicated to Minerva(see Blog entry for 19th March). It's not known when the tradition started because the holiday was not featured in the Roman calendar by 100 AD, but had been added by the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161–180 AD).

In the 6th Century AD, John Lydus, the Byzantine scholar, describes the festival as commemorating the mud (we would now know as the alluvial plain) caused from the flooding of the Nile. This ends hunger and drought and generates fertility.  It was thought to be represented by the birth of Harpocrates (Deity of silence, secrets and confidentiality), who in Roman art is depicted emerging from mud bearing a Cornucopia.

During the Pelusia, participants were sprinkled with water to obtain immunity from offences to the gods (impunitas periurorum) and rebirth (regeneratio). The sprinkling is thought to recreate the symbolic effect of the flooding, indicating that water from the Nile itself may have been used as a form of holy water as it was in other Isis ceremonies brought to Rome. Regeneratio was also used in connection with Baptism in Christian discourse of the time.

In Egypt, the Pelusia on 20th March, marked the beginning of the sailing season. The day was under the protection of Isis and Serapis (the Graeco-Egyptian version of Osirus combined with Apis, introduced by the Ptolemies in the 1st Century BC).

By keeping traditions, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

If you are looking for spiritually enlightening activities during lockdown, which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have the nextvirtual healing circle later this month  on  Sunday 28th March, at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT), and costs £20 (+ £2 Paypal fee). During this session, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme.

If you would like to experience one of our spiritual offerings (meditation, reading, 1:1 healing, a Forest Bathing+ session or a full mentoring course), why not ask for a Harmony Healing gift voucherfor a birthday or other celebratory occasion?

A number of virtual courses are now ready, details on Harmony Healing Virtual Events. Currently, due to Coronavirus, most events will be virtual hence distant readings and healings are proving popular. We don't recommend giving a reading or healing to another person, without first checking whether it would be welcomed.

Joanna offers distant intuitive readings (past life and/or aura readings) and distant 1-2-1 healings and virtual healing circles. We also have meditations available.

  • Saturday 24th February is Full Moon @ 12:30 and audio-recorded Full Moon meditation available from 9pm UK time

Snow Moon genericSaturday 24th February is Snow Full Moon, peaking at 12.30pm UK time. It's also a Micromoon this month.

When a Full Moon (or a New Moon) coincides with the point in the Moon's orbit most distant from Earth (apogee) it called a Micromoon.

Because of the Moon's elliptical orbit around the Earth, one side of the path is closer to the Earth than the other.

The point in the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth is known as apogee, and the point closest to Earth is called perigee. The average distance between the Moon and Earth is 237,700 miles or 382,500 kilometers.

When a Full Moon (or a New Moon) occurs around apogee, it's called a Micromoon, Minimoon or Apogee Moon. It will appear smaller tham a usual Full Moon and up to 14% smaller than a Supermoon when the Full Mooin coincides with the perigee.

Normally, I hold my Full Moon meditation, live on Zoom between 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT).  However, this month I am working in the woods during the day and I am going to record a meditation in the woods (audio only), which will be circulated to registrants by 9pm. Cost is £20 (+ £1 Paypal fee), with concessions for my students. Book as usual through the Harmony Shop - Events and you will receve a link to the recording, later in the evening.

The Native American tribes named each moon to keep track of the months and seasons, called the February Full Moon the Snow Moon. There isn't a standardised system however, as some tribes took a year to be 12 moon cycles, whilst others went with 13 moon cycles. Similarly some tribes worked with five seasons per year whereas others went with four. The Snow Moon is apparently named because historically it's been the snowiest month in America. Other tribes knew it as the Hunger Moonbecause it isn't conducive to hunting. American Farmers have adopted these titles so that they are still used today. (See article in the Telegraph for more on this).

It was thought the Celts also had names for each Full Moon of the year, however it seems this is a Neo Pagan belief first proposed by Robert Graves in his book The White Goddess published in 1948. In it, Graves reinvented the genuine early-medieval Irish ogham alphabet, purported to be based on trees, and created a Celtic Tree Calendar, naming 13 months after trees. Although it isn't an ancient tradition, being a tree lover myself and interested in Celtic words, I find it rather charming.

So, according to Robert Graves's imaginings, this is the Ash Moon (learnreligions.com). The Druids, venerated all nature but the three most sacred trees to them was the Ash, Oak and Thorn. The Ash tree features a great deal in Irish and Scottish folklore (the latter also including the Rowan, a form of Mountain Ash).  In the 12th Century, Marie de France wrote one of her famous lais about the Ash. The Ash is associated with rituals, magic and prophesy, making it a perfect choice for divining. Indeed, traditionally, more tools were made from Ash than any other wood, because it's not only very strong but it also resists shock (better than other hard woods such as oak or beech) making it an ideal choice for tool handles.  Ash berries were placed inside a baby's cradle to prevent the child being replaced with a 'changeling'. One of Odin's names in Norse is Ygg, which also means Ash, with the World tree, Yggdrasil, being an Ash.  Odin's spear was made from this tree.

Whilst writing a previous Blog article I wondered if our word 'ash' for something burnt was derived from the possible act of burning the magical tools (made predominantly of Ash) in an attempt to destroy the power of the Celtic Priests.

Between Full Moon and the next New Moon is considered as a good time energetically for detoxing the body.

Anyway, whatever the weather conditions, it's a fantastic excuse to get people of all ages outside in the fresh air and re-connecting with nature. Something our modern lifestyles and obsession with technology can distract us from doing...

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

If you would like to experience one of our spiritual offerings (meditation, reading, 1:1 healing, a Forest Bathing+ session or a full mentoring course), why not ask for a Harmony Healing gift voucherfor a birthday or other celebratory occasion?

  • Saturday 30th March, UK clocks go forward tonight

Clocks go forward 1 hourSaturday 30th March, in the UK this year, is also when the clocks go forward, in fact at 01.00 on Sunday 31st March (Easter Sunday) it becomes 02.00, and that is the start of British Summer Time (BST).

Here in the UK, the clocks first went forward over 100 years ago, under the Summer Time Act 1916. Although the original campaign was proposed by builder William Willett who was a keen golfer of the time (perhaps to get an extra hour of play in the evening). Other sources say it was for the benefit of farmers, but the final decision was probably driven by potential energy savings with WWI taking place.

UK clocks go forward to operate BST (known internationally as DST = Daylight Saving Time) from the final Sunday in March until they go back one hour on the final Sunday in October. Then the UK returns to Greenwich Mean Time GMT (also now known as Universal Time). Putting the clocks back in the Winter (October - March) gives more light in the mornings when children are setting off for school.

It never ceases to amaze me that the World Time is based on the UK. I suppose that is a testament to the power of the British Empire when it was decided to formally co-ordinate time across the globe. Indeed, it was Sir George Airey, in 1851, who was responsible for the prime meridian being based at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, in London, England. Amongst the 25 nations represented at the International Meridian Conference, hosted at Washington DC, the location of ‘zero longitude’ being centred at Greenwich was decided by popular vote. However, France abstained and for several decades thereafter French maps continued to refer to the Paris meridian.

Although there is no scientific evidence to support the practice of DST, it does seem that aligning ourselves with extra sunshine helps to bring balance and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Saturday 3rd February, Japanese Setsubun Bean-Throwing Festival

Setsubun hiragi iwashi ward away evil spritsSaturday 3rd February is Setsubun Bean-Throwing Festival, which is the day before the beginning of Spring in Japan.

The name literally means "seasonal division", but usually the term refers to the Spring Setsubun, celebrated yearly on February 3rd as part of the Spring Festival and accompanied by a special ritual to cleanse away all the evil of the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits, or naughty ogres or spirits called ‘Oni’ for the year to come.

Why bean throwing? Families celebrate by scattering roasted soybeans outside the door of their house to chase out the oni (naughty ogres or spirits).

They may also throw soybeans at a member of the family dressed as an Oni. If lockdown life is getting you all a bit stir-crazy, maybe chucking beans at each other is a good way to let off some steam!

  • Saturday 6th January, 12th Night or Epiphany in Christian tradition

6th January 12th Night or EpiphanySaturday 6th Januaryis Epiphany; the name for Twelfth Night in the Christian Calendar. The day when traditionally the Christmas Tree and other decorations should be removed until the following year.

Epiphany is defined as 'a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ'.

In the UK, Epiphany has become associated with an “Aha!” moment. As a literary device, epiphany (pronounced ih-pif--uh-nee) describes the moment when a character has a life-changing realisation which alters the direction of that character's belief structure and hence marks a turning point in the plot which influences the rest of the story. These are moments of great philosophical, spiritual, or personal insight.

The term Twelfth Night has been immortalised by the Shakespeare's play by that name.

In Western Christianity, the Epiphany feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child, whereas in Eastern Christianity, Epiphany commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.

The traditional date for the feast is 6th January, although some recognise it as the night of 5th January, and since 1970, the celebration is held in some countries on the Sunday following 1st January.

Popular Epiphany customs included attending church services, chalking the door, having one's house blessed, winter swimming, Epiphany singing. It was traditional to consume Three Kings Cake  or Twelfth Night cake, which would have a pea and a bean hidden within it; perhaps this was a prelude to our tradition of hiding a small coin in the Christmas Pudding. The lady who found the pea would be Lady or Queen of Misrule whereas the man who discovered the bean would be proclaimed Lord or King of Misrule, and roles would be reversed between masters and commoners, possibly explaining Shakespeare’s choice of title for his play although no direct reference is made to this feast within the script itself.

Aligning ourselves with community celebrations is very therapeutic and is excellent for promoting harmony and bringing wellbeing into our lives.

Start the year with some direction and support from a nurturing group of like-minded individuals. New Year New Moon New Vision is a mentoring programme through the first full lunar cycle of 2024. This includes distant attunements to the Moon (New Moons on 11th January and 9th/10th February plus Full Moon on 25th January), and including an attunement into Chinese New Year of the Earth Dragon (10th February) and an elemental ritual Imbolc ceremony. • Sunday 17th December, Roman Festival of Saturnalia

17 Dec SaturnaliaSunday 17th December is the Roman Festival of Saturnalia. This was the popular banquet commemorating the dedication of the temple of the god Saturn. It was marked by tomfoolery and reversal of social roles, in which slaves and masters ostensibly switched places.

The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum, and a public feast, continual partying with private gift-giving, gambling and a celebratory atmosphere that reversed the usual Roman social norms with masters provided table service for their slaves. The poet Catullus referred to it as "the best of days."

Saturn was an agricultural deity who, in Roman Mythology, was associated with the Golden Age, when humans enjoyed the spontaneous bounty of the earth without labour in a state of innocence.

Celebrating traditional festivals like Saturnalia, helped Roman communities come together and bring balance and harmony into people's lives.

Skywatching and aligning ourselves with the 'heavenly bodies' is great for for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives. Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is particulary therapeutic, hence being aware of the New moon (good for starting new projects) and Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

The next annual New Year New Moon New Vision lunar cycle study course will run 11th January to 9th/10th February 2023 and will cost £177 (£155 if booked before the year ends).

Also, if you feel connected to the lunar cycle, please note that our next Full Moon  Unity Consciousnesss Guided Meditation (£20), 7.30-9.30pm (GMT) is on Wednesday 27th December, when you will be guided though a mindful chakra healing programme, using colours and crystal energy. You will then be connected above (to the Sky) and below (to the Earth) to be part of the Harmony Healing Lightworker collective and start making a difference by sending regular global healing.

  • Sunday 17th March, St Patrick's Day & Roman Festival of Liberalia

St Patricks Day used 2021Sunday 17th March is St Patrick’s Day in Eire (Ireland).

St Patrick is credited with converting the Irish back to Christianity which had been abandoned under Roman rule.

Saint Patrick is said to have used the Shamrock (three leaved clover) as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity.

Apparently, the name shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg, which is derived from the Irish word for clover (seamair) and means simply "little clover" or "young clover".

Our Irish Shamrock was created by Antonia Skelton for Harmony Healing.

Liberalia 17 March17th March was also Liberalia, the Ancient Roman Festival to celebrate the male coming of age!

In view of the statement above that Christianity had been abandoned under Roman rule, I wonder if there is a connection that when Eire re-converted to Christianity they chose the day of the male coming of age as their date of celebration...

Liberalia was the Roman Feast of Liber Pater (God of wine and fertility, especially seeds) and his consort Libera, and was held three days after the Ides of March (15th).

The day was celebrated with ribald songs, processions of priests and elder priestesses - adorned with Ivy - and sacrifices, with masks being hung on trees.

Young Roman boys were given a lucky charm by their parents called a bulla praetexta, generally made of gold or leather, which was hung around their necks to ward off evil spirits.

When boys reached puberty (usually aged 14-16) this amulet would be removed and often placed on an altar dedicated to the Lares(Deities protecting the household and family), together with either a lock of the boy's hair or stubble from his first shave. Subsequently mothers' would retrieve them and keep them safe out of superstition, and they would be used for protection if the son was ever in public office or in a role involving any danger.

Later in the ceremony the rites of passage would continue with the fathers' taking their sons to the Forum to be presented as adult citizens, now with full adult rites including eligibilty to vote (if he met the statutory requirements of the time) and the authority to wear the pure white adult toga, as well as to marry.

By keeping traditions, communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.

  • Sunday 20th February, whether written as 20-2-22 or 20-02-2022 lots of 2 numerology

2 2 22 1Sunday 20th February, we have another energy portal; today's date is numerologically significant as it carries multiple frequencies of the number 2, whether written as 20.02.2022 or 20.2.22.

We have three days this month where the only (no zero) digit is two: Wednesday 2nd February 2022, Sunday 20th February 2022, Tuesday 22nd February 2022. Some numerologists even included Friday 11th February 2022 in the sequence, as the two 1s in 11 can be added up to a 2.

This series of dates when the only non-zero digit is 2 started in 2000 and happened again in 2002.  After 2022, it won't happen again until 2222, so not in our lifetimes.

The dates increase in intensity as we progress through, offering an opportunity to work through emotions and express what may have been voluntarily suppressed in the throat (or deeper in the body) or even release emotions involuntarily repressed due to trauma connected with it.

In numerology, the number two is said to represent Duality, Division, Polarity, Choice, Gestation, Cooperation, Service, Harmony, Support, Diplomacy, Patience, Psychic Intuition, Partnership, Mediation (seeing both sides of the coin), Comparison, Receptiveness, Helping, Collecting, Reproduction, Balancer of Opposites, Subconscious Memory, Positive and Negative.

Being a multiple representation of the number two, this February date has an additional meaning in angelic numerology where 222 and beyond (2222 etc.) are about transformation and change. There is a real opportunity to wish for global diplomacy. If you seek to transcend, transform, and reach unique levels in your life, these dates are highly auspicious.

We invite you to participate (wherever you are) in our meditation at 2.22 pm your local time at which time we will be focussing on the spread of harmony, love and diplomacy, with the release of karma based on war and hatred.

Aligning ourselves to aspects of nature, such as the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing balance and wellbeing into our lives. • Sunday 23rd May, Final Secondary 555 numerology

555 numerologySunday 23rd May is also a secondary 555 in numerology.  2021 is a '5' year in numerology (2+0+2+1 = 5), May is the 5th month and with the 5th May being the 5th day of the month, it was a primary 555 as digits for all aspects of the month each add up to 5.

Friday 14th and today, Sunday 23rd May, both carry secondary 555 energy as the digits of those dates also add up to 5. Subscribers to the Harmony Healing e-Newsletters will receive reminders on the day. See above entry for 5th May for more on the numerology of 5 and the full Harmony Healing Blog entry for 5th May entry for 5th May, for full details on the meaning of triple numbers in numerology and the interpretation of 555 specifically. • Sunday 31st December, New Year's Eve & Hogmanay

31 Dec Happy New YearSunday 31st December is New Year's Eve and Hogmanay in Scottish tradition. Many Scots had to work over Christmas because celebrations were virtually banned in Scotland for around 400 years, from the end of the 17th century to the 1950s. The Protestant Reformation led to the Presbyterian outlook, branding Christmas as a Popish or Catholic feast which was therefore prohibited. As a result, their winter solstice celebrations took place at New Year when family and friends gathered for a party and exchanged presents, especially for the children, which came to be called Hogmanay. Historians believe that the Vikings who, coming from even further north than the UK, paid strong attention to the passing of the shortest day and hence may have initiated the post-Solstice celebrations.

There is no definitive view on the origins of the word Hogmanay. Many Scottish words have derived from Flemish, so one popular view is that Hogmanay came from hoog min dag which means 'great love day', whereas the Scandinavian word Hoggo-nott described the 'feast preceding Yule' (itself a Scandinavian word commonly used in Shetland where the Scandinavian influence was strongest).

Alternatively, Hogmanay could source from the Anglo-Saxon, Haleg monath, 'Holy Month', or the Gaelic for 'new morning', oge maidne. Phonetically, a good candidate night be the similar sounding French expression Homme est né which means 'Man is born'. Also, in France the last day of the year when gifts were exchanged was aguillaneuf, though specifically in Normandy presents given at the year-end were hoguignetes.

In Scotland a similar practice to that in Normandy was noted, rather disapprovingly, by the Church.

"It is ordinary among some Plebians in the South of Scotland, to go about from door to door upon New Year`s Eve, crying Hagmane."
    Scotch Presbyterian Eloquence, 1693.

Common Scottish practices on 31st December, before midnight, have involved a thorough cleaning of the house (including taking out the ashes from the coal fire) plus the superstition to clear all your debts. Immediately after midnight, the long-held tradition to sing Robert Burns's For Auld Lang Syne has now evolved into a popular international custom.

31 Dec Hogmanay by Chris FlexenMany areas of Scotland have previously developed their own local Hogmanay rituals such as the fireball swinging rituals in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, in northeast Scotland. Chicken wire structures - filled with old newspaper, sticks, rags, and other dry flammable material  - are attached to lengths of wire, chain or non-flammable rope. When the Old Town House bell marks the New Year, the balls are set alight and the celebrants set off along a heritage route, swinging the burning balls around their heads as they go. At the end of the ceremony, any fireballs that are still burning are cast into the harbour.

In the Scottish Capital of Edinburgh, in the past they have really gone to town with a world famous 4-5 day New Year Celebration starting on 28th December and lasting until 1st or 2nd January, both of which are bank holidays in Scotland to allow folks to fully recover!

The Edinburgh festival is centred around the main shopping area in Princes Street where they traditionally held a lively street party. At the stroke of midnight, the cannon is usually fired at Edinburgh Castle, followed with a massive fireworks celebration. The image left shows Hogmanay fireworks over Edinburgh Castle by Chris Flexen.

Aligning ourselves with community celebrations is very therapeutic and is excellent for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

  • Sunday 31st October, Samhain or Halloween & meditation

Shutterstock Pagan Wheel InageSunday 31st October traditionally marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the Celtic and Pagan New Year. Samhain is Irish-Gaelic for 'the Summer's end', and is pronounced 'sow-in'.

We are running a Samhain/Halloween special celebration TODAY 2-4pm UK time (GMT) and meditation with the Celtic Goddess Cerridwen to release what is no longer serving you in your life. Joanna is co-hosting the session with Sarah Dennis. Sarah is a sacred celebrant and has studied in Glastonbury as a Priestess of Avalon and the Goddess and she's the resident Crystal Healer with the London College of Psychic Studies.  Cost is £20 for the 2 hours or half price to our usual concession audience of RSE graduates and previous Moon course participants. Select 31st October from the drop down options at the Harmony ShopInterested parties who can't attend the live session can register a booking and a link to the recording will  be sent out. The Samhain energies continue through 1st November - Celtic New Year.

Samhain represents the death of the summer sun god, Lugh. This festival celebrates Nature's cycle of death and renewal.  This is traditionally known as Halloween and is considered a time when the veil is thin between ours and other dimensions hence we can sense the presence of our ancestors more easily.

31 October Samhain HalloweenSamhain is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals; along with Lughnasadh, Imbolc and Beltane.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Samhain heralds the beginning of Winter when the world starts to darken and the days are getting shorter; the 'dark half' of the year and the demise of the sun's uplifting influence.

The crone, personified as Cailleach - the Queen of the Winter - was reborn on every All Hallows Eve, returning to bring the Winter and protect animals through the coldest months. She turned to stone on Beltane Eve, Beltane being 1st May.

According to clairvoyant, channel, spiritual teacher and author Edwin Courtenay

On Halloween (Samhain), the veil between the worlds is thin because the old Celtic year is ending and the new Celtic year about to begin. This day and night - not one thing or the other - is a luminal space used by the Spirits of the Dead to visit those they love who they have left behind.

In the Witches circle a door is opened in the East and the dead invited to walk through and commune with the living. In ancient days, plates were laid at the table and filled with food for the dead (a tradition still followed by some) the plate placed outside at the end of the night for the phantoms to feast on. On this day candles are lit and the loved ones gone before are remembered, grieved and loved. On this night the Horned Lord of the Witches rides with his ghostly troupe rescuing the lost and Earth bound Souls seeking peace.

The ghosts of Halloween are not Gouls and monsters but our relatives and friends, come not to terrify but to love. Welcome them then and share this night together and know that there is nothing to fear from the dead.

Edwin also explains what is meant by the 'veil is thin':

Midnight has always been known as the Witching Hour... but why?

Midnight is a luminal space - not quite one day or the other but rather a space between, a betwixt between and therefore a space close to the Spirit world and the Gods! There are other luminal moments of course - dawn and dusk and also luminal spaces such as thresholds, archways, wells and lakes. Places that are natural gateways, that harbour unseen things (like the evil eye - which is why we lift brides over thresholds - so the evil eye doesn’t see them) and other powers!

These moments are powerful then and the times when witches weave their spells - especially on Halloween night!!!

Traditional festivals like this helped communities to feel connected, bringing balance and harmony into people's lives. Neo-Pagan Druids acknowledge that Celtic folklore has its roots in Ancient Egyptian philosophies.

Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians, in the form of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy Healing, to bring balance and harmony. Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Level 1 - a new series of virtual interactive training modules  starts 10th November for three consecutive Wednesdays withKhemitology, followed immediately with Mindful Chakra Balancing & Unity Consciousness commencing 1st December.

  • Sunday 3rd December, Roman Festival of Bona Dea

Roman Goddess CeresSunday 3rd December is the Roman Festival of Bona Dea, this being a smaller festival that the one celebrated on 1st May but similarly for women only. In Roman mythology, Bona Dea (literally "the good goddess") was the goddess of fertility, healing, virginity, and women. Some sources say it's the 4th December.

She was the daughter of the god Faunus and was associated with supplying medicinal healing herbs in her temple garden. Bona Dea was also invoked for freedom from slavery; many of her worshippers were freed slaves and plebeians, and many were women seeking aid in sickness or for fertility.  Her oracles were revealed only to females.

Men were not just prohibited from Her secret festival, they not even allowed to know Her name, let alone utter it. There were other restrictions during the worship of Bona Dea: drinking either wine or myrtle was taboo and could not be mentioned by name throughout Her secret festival, probably because they were both considered very powerful due to their sacred association with Her. Bona Dea may have been aspect of Ceres, another Roman Goddess illustrated here.

Celebrating traditional festivals like Bona Dea, helped Roman communities come together and bring balance and harmony into people's lives.

Harmony Healing utilises the philosophies of the Ancient Egyptians, in the form of Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) Egyptian Alchemy Healing, to bring balance and harmony. Reyad Sekh Em® is an ultra high vibration healing system combining ancient Egyptian philosophies, alchemy, angelic elemental healing rays, sound vibration, sacred breathing and etheric crystalline energies.

Reyad Sekh Em (RSE) has been modularised so that Level One (introduction) is now available to complete online as 3 units. All the units can be taken alone but together make up the RSE 1 syllabus. Violet Flame of Amenti started Thursday 30th November.

Through Harmony Healing, Joanna offers a wider spectrum of events designed to nurture your welbeing. If you are looking for regular spiritually enlightening activities which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have our monthly Full Moon Guided Healing Meditations. The next one is Wednesday 27th December at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT). Participants all receive a deeply healing experience. Cost to participate is £20 by online BACS payment (small admin fee added for PayPal) or half price to RSE graduates. There are multi-buy packages for regular attendees. Book at the Harmony Shop.

During these monthly sessions, we connect with other like-minded people and together we work through a mindful chakra balancing process using colours and etheric crystals, with the aim that all participants will experience a degree of unity consciousness. This activity serves as a good taster of my work in general and the virtual format of our Zoom based programme. And, most importantly, it's a step towards making a difference to the global predicament.

  • Sunday 4th April, Roman Festival of Magna Mater with parallels to Ancient Egyptian beliefs

Magna Mater 4th AprilSunday 4th April is Magna Mater (the Great Mother) in the Ancient Roman calendar, the festival of Cybele, Phrygian Great Earth Mother.

Her priests took on female identities and clothing to commemorate her lover (or in some sources her son) Attis, who, following a castration, died of the wounds but was subsequently resurrected.

Phrygia was a kingdom in what is now Asian Turkey, then part of Anatolia, centred on the Sangarios River. After its conquest, it became an important region within a succession of great empires.

The cult of Magna Mater is arguably the oldest religion of all, with stone-age sculptures featuring this mother-goddess, and a 6000-year-old idol found in Çatalhöyük, depicting her as a seated woman flanked by two leopards. This is the form in which She came to be venerated as Cybele in Phrygia.

The worship of this Goddess evolved over the millennia, but She remained a symbol of the powerful female forces in the universe. Many different interpretations developed, and various religious factions have interacted.

Not much is known about Her worship in ancient times, but the cult involving Her incarnation as Cybele, in ancient Phrygia, later evolved into the cult of Magna Mater in Rome.

The legend tells of a small child who was left die in the wildness, as a victim of the big cats which roamed the area.  However, instead of killing Her the lions and panthers nurtured her, allowing Her to develop into an intelligent, headstrong and beautiful woman.

Perhaps She was a child mage who was later deified. She was said to have invented pipes and drums, as well as magickal medicines which She used to heal sick children and other creatures in the Phrygian vicinity.

She befriended not only the local animals and people, but also the satyrs and other supernatural beings.

According to one myth, She fell in love with prince Attis, but their love-story has a tragic twist; the intense Divine love of Cybele was overwhelming for the mortal prince, who went insane, castrated himself and died. Cybele, subsequently driven mad by grief, roamed around to sound of pipes and drums seeking Her lost love. In some other versions of the story, Attis was Her son but he succumbed to the same grisly fate.

The links between this story and the cult of Auset/Aset/Isis/Inanna/Ishtar/Asherah are very apparent, and these cults influenced each other heavily. Attis was identified with Dumuzi, Tammuz, Ausar/Wzr (Osirus) and other dead and resurrected gods.

There are also obvious parallels with the story of Sekhmet (Khemitian lioness Goddess) and Het-Hert (Hathor), the alter-ego of Sekhmet, whose worship merged with that of Auset/Aset (Isis) in various periods of Egyptian history.  And similarly, the Essene Angel Camael, Guardian of Mars and Tuesdays, who is linked with the She Leopard.

In around 200 BCE, the holy black rock relic of the Goddess was moved from Her cult centre in the Phrygian city of Pessinos, to a new centre in Rome, where Her following flourished.

Seemingly, once in Rome, Cybele was merged with the Greek Goddess Rhea, and re-identified as Magna Mater, the Great Mother. Men, called Galli, who had castrated themselves in front of Her image, became Her Priests but most of the followers were women.

The cult plummeted into a somewhat depraved and ecstatic affair with only castrated men and women being allowed to attend the principal celebrations of the goddess, which quickly became associated with wild orgies. It was only protected from prosecution due to the protection of influential people.

The faction became led by the female priestesses and the Archigalli, the high priest of the subordinate Galli; the latter being responsible for most of the dance, divination and healing of the cult.

The worshippers gradually fragmented into fraternities, most notably the Dendrophori ("Tree-bearers") and Cannophori ("Reed-bearers"), with the liturgy of the cult being Greek.

Members of these fraternities enjoyed a degree of social influence and elevated status, gathering important followers. The ceremonies generally commemorated the deeds of Magna Mater and Her love for Attis; who represented the fertility and germination of the land. By his castration and death, the land was infused with new life. Again, much like the Auset (Isis)/ Auar/Wzr (Osirus) religion.

Many plays, known as ludi, were performed featuring carnivals with elaborate banquets and enthusiastic comedic performances.

One of the prime annual festivals was Megalesia, 4th-10th April. At the peak of the celebrations a taurobolium was performed, where a bull was castrated and sacrificed, and new initiates were baptised in its blood. Sadly, another parallel with the association of Asar/Wzr (Osirus) with the Bull Cult and Serapeum (where bull remains were mummified) and a possible connection with the later development of the European Bull Fights, which I really hope will soon be ended.

Caves, mountains and natural springs were sacred to Magna Mater, and Her temples were often built close to them. Women sought help from the Goddess, who favoured mothers and children, by sleeping in the temple. Midwifes were affiliated with the cult, and several of the priests were venerated as healers. Whereas the priestesses were more involved with Her tantric aspects, celebrating Her mysteries in secret. Little detail is known about them, other than that they were exclusively women. Eventually the cult vanished along with most other mystery beliefs of antiquity.

It seems another major festival was celebrated the 25th March to commemorate the castration and death of Attis. The Cannophori carried and Idol of Attis together with reeds and stalks to the temple. Once again, the taurobolium was performed, this time with the genitals of the bull being thrown into a cave (or well) consecrated to Magna Mater. After three days of grief and sorrow for Attis, the carnival returned with the Day of Joy, known as Hilaria, when Attis was resurrected, and fertility of the land was re-instated thanks to the power of Magna Mater.

Fascinatingly, this strongly resembles an Khemitian ceremony, thought to convert to October/November in our current calendar. Hilaria, usually connected to 3rd Novemberis also the name of the culmination of the Egyptian Festival of Isiaon the 28th October, when Isis (Aset) resurrected Osiris (Asar) by re-membering him; no doubt contributing to the definition of our word remember meaning to recall someone from memory. Co-incidence?  I don’t think so …

  • Sunday 8th August @ 14:50 is Lunasa New Moon & Lion's Gate

8th August New MoonSunday 8th August@ 14:50 is Lunasa New Moon & Lion's Gate.  Whilst it wasn't the plan originally, I am now offering an 8:8 Lion's Gate Meditation at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time) on the 8th. This session will be specially themed on the energy portal between Egypt and the UK, angelic connections, plus of course, being the Lion's Gate, it will have a feline twist to it too. Book at the Harmony Shop (it's under Full Moon meditations although this is a New Moon).

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon.

It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy.

There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

Any New Moon is a fabulous day for creating a personal or corporate Vision Board.

Gardening by the moon has been practised for eons. It's not about planting at night, it's about being in harmony with the natural growth patterns of plants.

The moon progresses through four ‘phases’ or ‘quarters’ , each of which lasts about 7 days. Starting with the New Moon (today), the moon waxes (grows larger) and more visible.

There is a daily increase in light until the Full Moon is visible. After Full Moon, the light wanes (reduces) gradually back until New Moon, completing the lunar cycle. In the same way that the moon influences the rise and fall of the tides, it has gravitational impact on the moisture in plants (sap), the soil and water table. These effects are aligned with the lunar cycle.

For sowing and harvesting, we need to be in harmony with the flow of moisture as it is drawn up the plant into the stem and leaves, fruit and seeds. Or down into the root zone with the gravitational pull of the moon for root vegetables. New Moon is not a good time to plant in your garden.

Aligning ourselves with the moon cycle is very therapeutic, hence being aware of the Full Moon (a good time for bringing projects to a conclusion) and the New moon (good for starting new projects) is excellent for bringing balance and wellbeing into our lives.  My next lunar cycle study course is Wednesday 6th October - Thursday 4th November.

8:8 Lions Gate from Angela McGerrs Angel Quest of the Heart

Sunday 8th August is The Lion's Gate. August 8th (8:8 in numerology, being the 8th day of the 8th month) has always been experienced as the Lion's Gate doorway opening up a time portal to Khemitian (Ancient Egyptian) encodings situated between the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza.  The portal lasts 26th July to 12th August, but peaks every year on the 8th August.

The number 8, being the infinity symbol on its side, represents the infinite forever conscious part of our soul, higher realms of consciousness and our infinite journey. The number 8 is also connected with abundance and strength making 8:8 a good time to clear the way and charge our energies.

It is said to be an energetic doorway, which activates through the Solar Lion into the etheric and the Hall of Records (Akasha) and is associated with the marriage of matter and anti-matter, where polarities meet and merge.

Encrypted at sacred sites all over the world, but headquartered at Giza Egypt, these long-established data programmes, communicate with our own inner crystalline codes held in our DNA.

By tuning in and connecting with these codings we may be able to access a portal to ancient truths and wisdoms resulting in an accelerated spiritual awakening.

8 August Lions GateThe Lion's Gate is not only about numerology and astrology (being in the Lion shaped zodiac of Leo), it's also connected to the rising of Sirius, Sopdet to the Egyptians, sometimes referred to as our spiritual sun. It was believed to be the gateway to heaven and the home of higher frequency beings with advanced wisdom. The rising of Sirius coincided with the Nile floods, bringing abundance and wellbeing to the ancient civilisation. More at foreverconscious.com.

The beautiful mandala image on the left shows the Solar Lion by Richard Rockwood, from Angela McGerr's Angel Quest of the Heart. The book has been out of print for some years but we still have a few remaining unused copies at £40 each (plus postage and packing), signed by Angela, see Harmony Shop for details or Angela's books we have available.

  • Thursday 10th June, New Moon at 11:53 - Solstice Dark Moon & Annular Solar Eclipse

10th June New MoonThursday 10th June @ 11:53 is the Solstice New Moon & Annular Solar Eclipse (peaking 11.41 UK time), visible in most of Europe, North America & Asia, plus in North/West Africa, Atlantic & Arctic areas.

We will only see a partial eclipse here in the UK. According to the Royal Greenwich Observatory, the most we will see is the moon blocking about 25% of the sun, but it's the biggest eclipse visible here since 2015. Do not look at the sun without proper eye protection. See timeanddate.com.

Solar eclipses occur at the time of the New Moon, when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth, obscuring the view of the Sun from the Earth.

This creates a metaphor that a Solar Eclipse obscures our vision forward, allowing an ideal opportunity to reflect on the present and relate it to our past in a beneficial way. It's vital that this reflection is constructive and not the re-living of old pain, instead re-evaluate how much you have moved forward in the interim; looking for positive re-assessment and tangible progress on your life path. So, as we see, energetically, eclipses bring things into the open.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy. There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

  • Thursday 11th February, New Moon @ 19.05; Chinese New Year's Eve

New Moon image pngThursday 11th February is the New Moon @ 19:05.

The New Moon Abundance Ritual should be carried out within 24 hours after the New Moon. It needs to be after the New Moon because the moon should be waxing (getting bigger again) to carry the manifestation energy. There are video instructions on my Facebook Page or You Tube Page.

It's also the final day of the Chinese Year of the Metal Rat, making it Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve.

It is a fabulous day for creating a personal or corporate Vision Board for 2021. Creating a Vision Board which illustrates pictorially how you envisage your goals taking shape, really helps to make the possibilities seem real and attainable and gives a source of reference later when you want to look back and compare what you set out to achieve to what has materialised in the interim. Focussing on what you want to manifest in your life is a really effective way of bringing harmony and balance into your life.

Our New Year New Vision Lunar alignment course ends today. I can't believe it's almost over, the feedback has been amazing. Here's a typical response:

As we're almost at the end of the course, but still the beginning of a journey, I thought I'd share a few of the things that have changed for me during this moon cycle.

I have more space within... I can literally feel it - possibly as a result of the Soul Star and Earth Star Chakras attunement, and also because of the releasing that has been happening over the last 2 weeks.
I have recovered a routine which brings about a more productive day.
My brain has tuned into the fact that I need to lose weight... I've let go of snacking, I'm having beautiful detox baths and have done the oil pulling. I am doing daily dance exercises.
I am meditating more and got back on track with daily self-Reiki.
    I'm seeing the bigger picture.
    I am generally more focused.

Such positive stuff for everyday living! 💜
Yvonne Oaks, Light From Within, London, 10th February 2021

  • Thursday 16th & Friday 17th November, peak of Leonid Meteors

16 17 Nov Leonid meteorsThursday 16th and Friday 17th November; it is the Leonid meteors; one of the most prolific meteor showers also known as shooting stars. The shower peaks this year the night of 16th/17th November and 17th/18th November, but you may see some meteors from 6th - 30th November. The Waxing Gibbous Moon leading to the Full Moon on 17th will help viewing this year, as we've only just had the New moon on Monday 15th. See Time & Date website or EarthSky Website for more.

The Leonids have had occasional periods when hundreds of meteors can be seen, roughly every 33 years, and were especially stunning in 1799, 1833, 1866, 1966 and 1998.

This shower has produce  meteor storms in the past, but a Leonid storm is not expected this year. The Leonids are usually modest, with typical peak rates of about 10 to 15 meteors per hour, in the darkness before dawn. Look for the shower radiating from the constellation Leo after midnight. This meteor stream is associated with Comet Tempel-Tuttle. As the meteors in the stream are thought to be dust particles released from the comet it is thought likely that there is a dense stream of such particles in the path of the comet and located close to it. The Earth's orbit passes close to the comet's orbit each year in November and the Earth collides with these particles of cometary debris following the comet's orbit.

According to the EarthSky Website, it is a myth that we need focus only on ethe radiant point to see Meteors. In fact it seems they often don’t become visible until they are 30 degrees or so from their radiant point, so they are streaking out from the radiant in all directions.

Thus the Leonid meteors – like meteors in all annual showers – will appear in all parts of the sky.

Even if you can't see anything, there will be an impact energetically.

Orionid radiant point 2You can invoke the Angel Zikiel (Angel Guardian of Meteors and Asteroids) to help bring in new ideas. The image of Zikiel (left) is by Richard Rockwood from Angela McGerr's Heart & Soul Angel Cards.

Zikiel guides the comets and meteorites in their eternal passage through space, tracking man's galactic origins and offers you a visionary flash of inspiration from the Sky.

You can invoke Zikiel by calling his name three times (pronunciation = Zick ee el) and adding 'I call upon you to be with me now, 'in love & light, in love & light, in love and light'.

If you have a clear quartz, you can programme it with Zikiel's name and keep it with you to help capture any inspirational thoughts channelled from the heavens tonight and also to help your heart to make the right choices.

This ritual is taken from Angela McGerr's An Angel For Every Day - now out of print and in very short supply. However, we do still have some of Angela's out of print titles (generally also personally signed by her) available via Harmony Healing Shop.

Skywatching and aligning ourselves with the 'heavenly bodies' can be very therapeutic for bringing harmony and wellbeing into our lives.

Through Harmony Healing, Joanna offers a wider spectrum of events designed to nurture your wellbeing. If you are looking for regular spiritually enlightening activities which help to connect you with the lunar cycle, we have our monthly Full Moon Guided Healing Meditations. The next one is on Monday 27th November at 7.30-9.30pm (UK time = GMT), the Full Moon peaks earlier in the day at 09:16.

For full immersion with moon energy join one of our New Moon New Vision, Lunar Cycle Alignment Programmes. Our next New Moon New Vision; Lunar Cycle Alignment Programme commences 11th January 2024.

  • Thursday 16th May, Pagan Festival of Lunantisidhe

LunantisidheThursday 16th May is the Night of Lunantisidhe, a Celtic Festival honouring the fairy spirits of blackthorns.

From a website called selkywolf.com (no longer live), which featured extracts from 'A Witch's Guide to Faery Folk' by Edain McCoy, it seems that Lunantisidhe is a curious blending of the Latin word 'Luna' meaning 'moon' together with the Gaelic 'sidhe' which means 'faery'. They are the guardians of the blackthorn tree from which humans (and Leprechauns!) make shillelaghs, a walking stick indigenous to Ireland

These fairies are - according to an AngelFire site - 'Wizened little stick creatures with long arms and fingers for climbing between the thorns'. Their sole purpose for existing seems to be to protect the blackthorn trees from human encroachment. The only time they approach the tree is to pay homage to the Moon Goddess at the Esbats (a specifc Full Moon Wicca Ceremony which may have it's origins in Celtic folklore), perhaps explaining why their name has a lunar connotation.

According to another very informative site ecoenchantments.co.uk, unlike the majority of great mystic trees, the Blackthorn appears to be revered only in the British Isles (Celtic folklore of both Itish and Scottish tradition) with there being little or no association with the mythical traditions of other ancient civilisations.

The Blackthorn, latin name Prunus Spinosa, is a tree of profound magical lore in the Celtic tradition. It is one of the designated Eight Chieftain Trees on the Ogham Tract, where its name is Straif (strife, said to be where the word came from in the English dictionary) and translates as ‘Increaser of Secrets.’  I feel it brings a whole new meaning to 'trouble and strife' the Cockney rhyming slang for wife!

The Blackthorn is also know as sloe (after its fruit), sloe plum, snag, spiny plum, wishing thorn, faery tree, (dark) mother of the woods, pear hawthorn. Within the UK, the trees are an ancient, native pioneer species, with evidence that the fruits were eaten by early man. Blackthorn was used in Iron Age communities (c3400 yrs ago) as remains have been found, buried in a straw filled pit (believed to be used for ripening and preserving the bitter sloes) near Glastonbury in the Lake Village (recorded in a catalogue of findings by the excavator Arthur Bulleid).

Blackthorn is also wellknown for its medicinal benefits, having been catalogues by both herbalists, John Gerard in 1597:  ‘The juice of sloes do stop the belly, the laske and bloodie fluxe, the inordinate course of womens terms, and all other issues of blood in man or woman.’

Whilst Nicholas Culpeper, in 1653, recommends a decoction of the powdered bark of the roots, or of the fresh or dried berries as a cure for ‘lask of the belly , or stomach, or the bloody flux, and to ease the pains in the sides or bowels.’  He also recommended a distilled liquid of the flowers steeped in a highly honeyed mead, which he described as 'A most certain remedy, tried and approved, to ease all manner of gnawing in the stomach, sides and bowels, or any griping pains in any of them, to drink a small quantity when the extremity of the pain is upon them.’

Undoubtedly Sloe Gin is still enjoyed today (made annually by my husband's Uncle Ron, aged 83, with sloes collected from the countryside). Perhaps the continued popularity is due to its therapeutic benefits.

As part of the Lunantisidhe festivities, holy trees marking sacred places and wells are acknowledged and new scraps of cloth are tied to their branches.

By keeping traditions, Pagan communities retained a sense of harmony and connection, thereby bringing balance and wellbeing into their lives.
